genius. i had not heard this in at least 15 years. i was a wierd little kid i discoverd MOI in 1970 (10 yrs old) got this on an original promo album with an asst from freak out, one of my faves-were only in it for the money--who needs the peace corp? ---listen to l+r channels separately, its not just noise for the last half.
i did not have a clue that any one else ever even heard america drinks, let alone gets it !! i've been hooked for 40+ years-it gets me so hot i can scream, AliceCooper
Zappa poked fun at just about everything American society could churn out, and obviously, cheesy, night club schmaltz was no exception. Ray Collins is superb as the patronizing, crooner/MC. "Hi Bob, how's the kids? wonderful". It was a shame when he left the band. He had such a unique voice that gave such life to so much of the early MOI stuff. Frank on vocals fell way short. On another note, I always felt that the Beatles sort of shamelessly ripped this song off with "You Know My Name" ....
This is my father's band... every small wedding bar mitzpha band in the last quarter of the 20th century. A great melody. A slice of life.. .it's true, it's true!
The "Simpson's" theme? You've got to be kidding right? This album was released in 1967 so the song was probably written in 66. The Simpsons weren't even thought of at that time. I think you've got it all backwards...
I think this is absolutely briljant. It's a very good portrayal of a band who plays sloppy, is unispired and unprofessional, playing in front of people who don't really care about music. The inquiry of the singer how the kids are doing of someone he knows from the audiance tells it all. I think Zappa knows all about it and it's true to life. But what it all comes down to is if you have a connection with these social experiences FZ is portraying or not. If it has meaning for you, it's Art.
@jammmon He was against drugs and their association with the, "It's cool to be an asshole and do random shit," attitude that often arises after having gotten high or drunk. He tried weed many times, it not making people into retards, but got nothing out of it. It wasn't out of health precautions or any bullshit like that that Zappa was opposed to most drugs. Tobacco and coffee are somewhat unique in that they aid productivity and awakeness.
@karoshimon I think that intermittent doses of cocaine could also be helpful to a person... Tribals in the Amazon chewing leaves before they go to hunt wild animals. Weed chills you out, makes you happy, makes you hungry- it can be helpful in a number of ways, but it's also as Marx would put it, a sedative of the masses. I'm surprised that our politicians haven't caught on to weed yet. Such a drug, producing relaxed, happy people, would be the first thing I'd promote as a ruler.
@jammmon "Tobacco addict". I just quit smoking after like 15 years of steady smoking. It's just funny to hear someone refer to me as an "addict". I feel like I should be sneaking out at night and slitting people's throats for a cigarette.
You're a silly person. I hope smokers kill you with their second-hand smoke.
I haven't felt this much audio addiction since The Beach Boys' "Passing By" (1968)!

Of course it's sardonic musical satire- but if you listen, the changes are really pretty. Absolutely Free remains my favorite Zappa recording.
