But you can't accept the fact that people in the satellite states of Europe (not the USSR itself I know 88% of people In the actual not the puppet states wanted to retain it) the people of the puppet states however hated the USSR regimes such as Poland and so on.
NATO today however is necessary for Russia to respect the current borders. Same goes with NATO respecting Russia's borders.
