The cross is the common symbol for Christianity, Christmas is the 2nd most powerful Christian holiday and there is no reason to believe that both stories are not true. I have heard a nearly exact story from a WW2 vet who was a POW in Japan, since that predates Solzhenitsyn, does that make him a liar? Now, it could very well be that he was talking about himself in the third person, but I still find it fishy.

It's also fishy that he never mentionned the story before 1999.
