My deepesst respect for all those who have had the courage to come forward and report the abuse. And to those who have persevered in taking actions which will prevent future abuse--and ultimately, little by little--change the world.

And the sad thing is that many priests who appeared before the Irish courts charged and convicted of child abuse were given suspended sentences. Only a handful were sent to prison. The judge used their age and their failing health as an excuse to keep them out of prison where they should have lived out the rest of their sorry lives.

Our society has moved away from corporal punishment and, in my opinion anyway, it has done our children no favors.They grow up today knowing they have the upper hand. Spanking is not abuse. It is a useful tool if used correctly.

The facts are that any punishment of that kind causes damage to the developing brain and neural networks, by causing a release of cortisol, which damages neuron connections and inhibits further growth of neurons. 'Adaptation' to accepting such punishment becomes then hard-wired, and the child has to identify with that - which explains the resistance people like you have to any empathy for the child you were.

@jack23620 Out of control? that's a media hyped story... most children are as ever well behaved... however more children are resisting being told what to think or who resist being bullied by teachers ect only because the use of violence is reduced, and so those that the violence would have quietened before are now speaking out.... and many, many children are actively looking at ways to change the way society works so that it is more fair, more empathetic.... good for them!

I had to listen while our Priest was telling us on the pulpit that the natives were lying and that abuse did not happen. Yet, I have had many good priests and nuns be HONEST about it all. Even though they had no part, they are being honest so it can be corrected.
I am a Catholic, I face the truth of those people who were resorting to such evil to harm children.

@jack23620 OK. I am beginning to get the picture now. I too was young during the 1950s. i can remember that people were punished with the cane at Catholic schools. It is now considered wrong, but the brothers/priests used it to turn out good people. If you were rebellious, you got caned. There was never any paedophilia tied in with this. It was never covered up either.

The same thing is happening in Germany right now where the German Justice Minister, a lady instead of giving instructions for the setting-up of a commission to investigate this crime, has instead suggested a round table panel of govt reps, the Catholic church and the victims, to give the church an opportunity to pay compensation to the victims.

I find it amazing that in countries where the majority of their population embrace the Catholic religion, their governments and population show an unhealthy level of deference to the Catholic Church, to the extent of it being perceived as possibly great fear of the church. A good example would be Ireland where the Irish authorities and police (the Gardai) did not investigate the victims' complaints of child abuse until many many years later.
