I love this man! I saw Jimmy whenever he would come to Chicago. He sings from a place that we can seldom get to, and probably would not want to. There has been no singer, that can blow you off your feet with emotion like JS. I become totally incapacitated and only can focus on him when he is singing! His performances have a value that can't be compared.....
@speedcrane I have to say I agree with your sentiment about the concerts potentially going on for days - not my taste either however.... I really recommend giving his recordings a listen/chance as you won't find this to be an issue (at least I don't ). If you can get a recording of this song, "On Broadway" or perhaps "Unchained Melody" I think you will be blown away - I was. I think he is a great talent and hate for you to miss out is all. Take care
Sometime in 1992 - 93, ran across Jimmy singing at the Meadowlands Racetrack, Rutherford, NJ. Had a long chat with him; he invited me to his gig the following evening in Orange, NJ (don't remember the name of venue). Quite some time passed without any contact, until we wound up sitting at the same table at the 5th Annual Newark Jazz Festival (Nov. 1995) at which time he received a tribute award. Friendship was renewed and I invited him to birthday on 12/3.
I believe 1st time a saw him was on david lettreman ... or ...??? he sang elton john's "sorry...." ... i was shocked ... master of any size and dimension and beyond ... <333
I'm a very lucky person to have had Jimmy sing at my 60th birthday party in South Orange, NJ. No one at the party believed he was coming. There was a snow storm going on, and I received a phone call from Jimmy saying he was lost. I told him just wait there and I'll be there in a jiffy. He and another male singer followed me home. I don't remember the name of his friend, but I was told that he also sang like an angel. There's no better jazz/ballad vocalist in the world.
Jimmy, oh beloved. His reading of 'Motherless Child' is imbued with the most singular sincerity and warmth I have ever heard from any singer of any style of music. His is a universal instrument; gracious and kind and so very human. Bless you, Jimmy Scott.
Hi everyone...me again ( posted on same subject yesterday). Funny how the mind works. Today, tired from yard work and taking a shower, I unconsciously began singing the version of Motherless Child I mentioned in the previous post...and suddenly the title of the album came to me. I'm pretty sure it was "Jimmy Scott...The Source." If its been put on CD, or if anyone can post the version of Motherless Child from that recording, please do. Peace.
Jeanie (and everyone), this rendition is wonderful, but the first time I heard Jimmy sing was in the 70's and he sang a different version of Motherless Child, and it blew my mind. I bought the album, but it got away from me somehow and now I cannot find that rendition anywhere. All I remember is that the cover had a picture of a person with a tremendous Afro (which was the rage back then.) Do you know the album, and is that version available on CD or anywhere? I Would love to hear it again.
I searched, but never before, have i heard a version that was performed the way MY heart needed it to be. i thought that i might be emotional if i ever did hear it, but i never dreamed i would be devastated. i feel so blessed to hear this man sing.
He has some kind of strange/rare disease that allows his voice to stay in a pre-puberty pitch. He talked about it when I saw him play. It was really cool... he played several songs, & there was a Q & A afterwards... & you could shake his hand & talk to him one on one, which was really cool. Usually legendary type folks like that... you can't even get close to 'em. He was very nice though & smiled & was very optimistic considering the challenges he experienced in his life.
I have seen him one time at "Borders" in Ann Arbor by incident. I have never seen or heard anybody like him and I told a lot of people in Germany (i am German) about him.
The Legendary Jimmy Scott is the best. I heard him sing this song at Lincoln Center in 2008 and was moved to tears. To hear Mr. Scott sing this live was beyond compare. I'm going to try my best to see him in 2010. I've never been to Las Vegas before but if I don't quit my job to see him in San Francisco I'm gonna go see him there.

Two words: Excellent, Fantastic.... yes Mr. Jimmy Scott certainly delivers this song like no one else can, this renditiion Jazzy yet bluesy at the same time. Such Power and Control in his Voice with a tremendous amount of heartfelt emotion- I'm buying whatever he is selling, sounds Wonderful... A Most Talented and Lovely Man. And the Beautiful, Mrs. Scott, her smile and Grace are so infectious, a truly charming Couple. Love them, God Bless! Sincerely, Your Marcie B. & Dee xxx
Heard Mr. Scott sing this in Nagoya 2006. He was tired that night. But when he sang this, the earth stopped spinning. Haunting. Profound. A conveyor of another time and space.
It has been well documented that Jimmy was her sole influence from the time she was age 12 on....studying his phrasing. Nancy says about herself I sound like Little Jimmy Scott. He considers her his "spiritual daughter".
Thank you very much for sharing this video. Earlier this year I read his biography, "Faith In Time" by David Ritz, and found a whole new appreciation for Mr. Scott. His talent, his voice was the foundation of several artists that preceded him. What a rare and beautiful spirit. Thanks again.
July 17, 2009. Happy Birthday, Jimmy. I have the same birthday today (47). You and my father would be the same age. Sadly, he is no longer here. But I hope you and I can celebrate many more birthdays together.
I love him. Always heard he was Nancy Wilson's mentor, but never heard her confirm that. Their sounds are so similar. Can anyone provide documentation? May god bless Little Jimmy Scott.
Little Jimmy Scott can sing! I've been listening to him for years. I love to hear him. Voice, style etc... is great. The best! Love him! and I am a 38 year old male.
I cried a river back about l0 yrs. ago, late at night...when I watched a documentary of this great man. I could not stop crying...it is a MUST SEE...his mom died, right in front of him..saving his sister from being hit by a car. He is/was amazing...and I hope he still sings. I LOVE THE GUY. Ann in Northern Mich.
I hate the false, slow vibrato, but his voice is utterly unique and that completely makes up for it. Never did I think I would hear an naturally unbroken, mezzo-soprano-ish male voice singing jazz. He's amazing!
One of the long living legends. My mother took me to the Million Dollar theater in Los Angeles 3rd & Broadway to see him in 1947. He was appearing with Lionel Hampton then. I took my sons (3) to see him at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City, L.A. area in 1999. He was appearing with Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff. He sang the song Angel Eyes and a few other standards. 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool' I remembered him singing the song in 47.
See him all! He has many stories to tell about his career.
By the way , this song is amazing , thank you for posting this and learning me. I love jazz but did not know of this man until watching The Cosby Show,go figure. =/
You know I only looked this up because I was watching The Cosby Show and he had a bet with Claire about a Little Jimmy Scott song called An Evening in Paradise. Anyways, as I'm listening to this song I'm wondering if Ritchie Havens sung his version of this song at Woodstock 1969.
This just goes to show how limited radio has become. I am 47 and when I was a kid you would hear Soul, Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Country all on the same radio station. Good for you all!! Keep listening, but do your own research. Little Jimmy Scott is one of the few national Jazz treasures that are still with us!

A great rendition of one of my favorite songs. I heard about Little Jimmy Scott in a Nancy Wilson interview. Miss Wilson stated she was greatly influenced by the artist. I hear the similarity in the phrasing.
