  • From this view, the tatoo actually looks smaller O_0

  • niceeeeee 3

  • The music is of course awesome but seriously... why do some people buy tickets if they're not going to listen to the music and talk throughout the whole damn thing?! -.-

  • The Ulster Scots.. The most friendly folk youll ever have the good fortune to meet, The Ulster Scots.. Amongst the best musicians in the world

The Ulster Scots.. The finest soldiers you would NEVER want to meet on a battlefield... FAUGH A BALLAGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • major goosebumps at 2:47

  • @jumpster95 I'm sure it was lovely to be a warrior from centuries past. Plague, dysentery, gangrene, rotting teeth and no anesthesia sound like lesser things to have to put up with compared to the "political correctness of the modern era".

  • STOP FECKIN TALKING YA WEE HAGGIS'S I wanna hear teh music nae yer mooths!

  • thats f@#cking awesome

  • To say that this is awesomely epic, is such an enormous understatement, it gave me chills......BRAVO!!!

  • Tears came to my eyes simply beautiful

  • im confused, why call it last from the mohicans when the song is called The Gael. was the story the guy was talking about from last of the mohicans

  • @ReaperGFX The Gael is the THEME from Last of the Mohicans (The movie)

  • i like it

  • So greeeeeat (from France !)

  • Absolutely Spine Tingeling

  • absolutely fantastic

  • Damn you Brits, that was good. Now, if you would just come over to the good side of the force and stop waging war for the illuminati you would be incredible.

  • @sproutingman We do our best, but we are not perfect.

  • Utterly awesome, that sound of massed pipes and bands just takes my breath away every time

  • Can anyone tell me what a tattoo is?I've seen it in all videos that exhibit a scotch army unit parading or performing musical pieces...help anyone?

  • @Ronin2792 i was in the tattoo in 1997 i was a drummer in th 1st batt the royal highland fusiliers tattoo just means the performance or music show

  • whats with all the critics here? enjoy the music!!!

  • tht wasn't a clarenette tht kicked in it was the royal scots wit the bagpipes

  • I'm afraid I have to say this wasn't good. HomicidalSabu got it right in his post 9 months ago. It's good they showed unity and played together but the brass lads got in the way of the true essence.

If you enjoyed this disappointing attempt you should really listen to this Dougie Maclean stroke of genius performed to it's best at the 1997 Edinburgh Tattoo. One violin, then joined by a gaelic choir before the massed bands came in.

If you have this clip to hand - POST IT. Pipe Nirvana!

  • @lecrazyBof this was suppose to be about the brass players

  • Why would someone thumb something like this down! I mean this isn't the type of video you would click on unless you mean to!

  • Espetáculo

  • In the Year 1997 they played this an I was sitting in the right. That was great. Lots of memories grow.

I think, it is time for annother travel to scotland!

  • I was there in 2008. and it was perfect! :)

I suggest everyone who can to go to Edinburgh and enjoy the military tattoo because is it one of the best shows ever.

I am definitely going again!! :D

  • this song reminds us of what we should be, strong and honest, honorful and good...

  • this sounds are calling us to stand up our lives with values: ... temple, honor, goodness, culture, Honesty...

  • this brings tears to me eyes!

  • We're coming all the way from South Africa this year to see the tattoo! Our date is 16th Aug.

The old colonial blood ties are still strong here.

A great song and very well played.

    Greetings from Natal.

  • good will win in the end

    God knows

  • I grew up in Amherst, Nova Scotia where this war became brutal and infamous. The British tied people to the bottom of the river ( convicted spies and collaborators) that bordered the river between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to let the tide come in on them and let them drown. It was a very brutal war and just because it was over 250 years ago I don't forget it for a single day! This is beautiful music.

  • @SnojetSteve

    u = cock

  • @SnojetSteve What do you mean don't forget it? You wasn't there. You only know what you've been told.

  • Excelente, lastima la calidad del video. Pero nice shoot anyway.

  • very nice, did they do much more?

  • how is it unrecognisible, when i saw this ion the tv i knew it was from Last of the Mohicans. Ur talkin outta ur ass.

  • @CanadiaNecro1 weirdo. go shag a corpse you necrophile.

  • That was a bit rude and uncalled for.

  • @CanadiaNecro1 so is necrophilia

  • Get over yourself slasheh.

This setting is completely different from the original score and the bands are playing out of sync.

  • i thought you'd be totally into different settings, what with your nightly visits to graveyards..

  • Do my habits excite you or something?

You keep going on about it.

  • i'm not the one with it in my youtube name..

  • Yeah but you picked me out.

  • @CanadiaNecro1 cause you're a necrophile. i don't see any others in these comments..

  • @slasheh

I have years of experience of being in bagpipe bands, have been to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo twice, and have had the honour of playing in a local version(in Estes Park USA) of this specacle as the piper on the rampart.

I'm as credible as you can get here, necrophile or not, I am a bagpipe player, a composer, and I say this musical setting sucked and they could have done better. I personally could have composed a better setting, as could some of my peers.

  • yeah but the setting you'd of chosen would of been a graveyard..

  • what is this festival about ?

  • It's just a military show stemming from long gone tradition.

  • This is brilliant. I was sitting just a couple of rows along :)

  • when is this festival?

  • can somone tell me the proper background th this song please?

  • @MultiSamwel: This music is from the film - Last of the Mohicans, directed by Michael Mann and starring Daniel Day Lewis. Watch it. It's a great film.

  • thanks i will do ! : )

  • @MultiSamwel the song is from the movie "The last of the Mohicans" based on a book by James Fenimore Cooper, writin in 1826. Its story is oh a white man that is adopted by the father of the last of his tribe. Read the book then watch he movie youw like it. ever on does.

  • this is fuckin beautiful !

  • watch your lanagage please this is a family site

  • i cant belive i started crying im not shiting you its unbelievable

  • luv the tattoo and luv edinburgh born and raised :)

    Mon the scots!!!!!

  • scotland

  • Oh my gosh!!! They sound so awesome! We are from America but my Hubby has been to Edinburgh before, says it's an absolutely breath-taking place! I envy him, lol. Anyway,, just wish there were more than one violinist, I only noticed one, lol. You guys rock!!! This song sends me cold chills!

  • Our military bands are brilliant particularly the Royal Marines Band & The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. I would love to go & see the Military Tatoo because I think it would be a wonderful experience to see & hear all the bands together. Of course what tops it off is the setting in Edinburgh Castle because at night when it's all lit up, it just looks fantastic. One day I will get to see the Tattoo & considering I don't live too far from Edinburgh, I really have no excuse.

  • same here

  • how idiot tolking int the video

  • stop talking in the fucking video!!!

  • @Lateral1s its kinda hard to tell them that when its already posted, but im sure they will remember the next time. :)

  • It was awesome.. I visited in 2009.. Thanks for the nice vdo.

  • Conductor looks like he's having a seizurebeat time old man, not random jerky movements!

  • what does that mean?

  • If you think it's cool watching it on youtube, I can't begin to describe how it felt being there. The whole Tattoo production is probably one of the most amazing sites I'll ever be fortunate enough to see.

It was one hell of a way to cap off my trip to Scotland.

  • simply amazing,WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is so sick...! feels like we're in a different world

  • that was cool

    that was cool

am in love with this music

    thanks for the video

  • Im at Queen Victoria school and I played in the middle of this, I was a drummer. I t was amazing

  • its a orsome song. i know a 556 ruteen to this song, but a different version of it. SOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo cool!

  • I was born in the wrong century and this song only confirms this. When I here this song and some like it I can only think of the warriors from centuries past that would not have put up with the political correctness of the modern era.

  • @jumpster95 ARE YOU A WARRIOR OF TODAY? BECAUSE THE SUN SHINES DOWN ON US TODAY JUST LIKE IT DID THEN... AND THOSE WARRIORS STILL EXIST, EVEN IF THEY DONT KNOW IT YET...DONT LOOK TO OTHERS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT...LOOK WITHIN YOURSELF...THE TIME IS NOW AND IS MORE IMPORTANT AND EVER MORE EPIC THAN IT HAS EVER BEEN AND EVER WILL BE...

  • I was playing in this. I was in Queen Victoria School pipe band. It sounds even better when you are stood in the middle of it all. It was my fave bit to play.

  • Really good , its a great piece of music really like it. one of the best sound tracks used in a movie. I wouldn't say it was quite as good as the Gladiator sound track , but its certainly not far behind.

  • for those asking about bands there would have been the massed band of the marines and some army players from the scots gaurds

  • I was there as well....The Gael (to give it's official name) is an amazing, heart-wrenching song that can stir any unbeating heart...and the massed pipes and drums of the 2008 Edinburgh Tattoo captured the emotion perfectly. Play it at 2009!!

  • I was there August 2008 and it was amazing live! I actually shed tears - it was that beautiful and powerful.

  • beautifulest song ever EVER!!!!!!!!!

im tearing up every time i here it

  • Im from germany...

    i really love it

    thanks for posting

  • i did drill to this

  • Most of the Bands were British Army, 1 USA college band.

Pipers British Army and an Australian band.

  • is that british band???

  • Its The Royal Marienes band. My dad was the person conducting this. he's the one on the box

  • i can´t imagine what kind of badass goosebumps your dad must have had in that moment

must feel awesome to conduct this song under this circumstances!

  • Gives you goosebumps I bet this sounded brilliant live!!

  • so what nation/s are performing in this video?

  • williemcb - its ''The Gael'' not ''The Geal''

  • Great music, shame about the talking near the camera when the violin starts playing though!

  • I hope to watch this in Edinburgh next Year. Love it!!!.

    This is very GOOD!!!!

  • good cam relay

  • Hmm so who ever filmed this was sitting almost right next to me...

  • Comment removed

  • great

  • amazing....faugh a ballagh

  • Holy crap, I would never have guessed they played this at the Edinburgh Tattoo!

    This is so good!

  • dont want to ba a dick but the right name of this compostion is "The Geal" by dougie mcclean (search for "caledonia") i am an ayrshire boy born and bred, and Tapmann if you have even a wee bit of scots in you, you a dumb scot not a dumb yank, lol

  • well, thanks for bein a tool, and we're americans. just cause im irish, doesnt mean i run around tellin people that.

  • Sweet God, this is beyond beautiful...

  • Props to you, k17mby. Nice video and excellent sound quality. I did notice the women talking during the most inspirational part! Women are so alike the world over : ) I wish we could get this on TV in the States. My paternal grandmother and Aunt were Scottish and I would enjoy visiting before my time is done. That is, untill everyone starts calling me a "dumb yank."

  • you dumb yank. :D

  • Thanks bluerabit303. I've been waiting for that ever since my post. It took longer than I thought and from a Canadian, no less! LMAO

  • your welcome :D

  • keirfree, why is it on almost every post on you tube or most other things on the internet there is an idiot sure to arrive and think they are funny by their chidish comments

  • Because it is the internet. There's not much to do about it unless you are in a position where you can ban their accounts.

  • I was luckly working at this years Tattoo and I had a access all areas pass for the whole duration of the show been on. I went most nights and this part of the show was the best

  • brilliant

  • Mona75018 ( You really think those Soldiers want to eat Snails,, Get Real

  • This is such a beautifully composed song! I have said this once and I'll say it again; this would make a great anthem! :D

  • Why don't they come in France ?

    That's wonderfull !!!

  • I think the 6/8 part where the pipes joined in was way too fast.

  • you're right... I don't like it that fast... I prefer the slow version:)

    anyways It's a lovely tune

  • What a powerful piece of music. Stunning. :O

  • Nice try here but leave this song to the Flute Bands. Drumderg owns this song.

  • the gael

  • I think Davis fuckend up this beautiful tune, there are just too many different instruments playing, which don't really fit together. The Gael sounds best when played by pipes, drums and violins only, but thats just my opinion :)

  • Truly amazing to watch, a real gem! So how many people had watery eyes? LOADS!!! lol.

  • To end this discussion: Yes, the tune is "The Gael", written by Dougie Mac Lean, a great scottish musician and songwriter. It was uased for the movie/film "The Last Mohican"

Scotland can be proud of its songwriters, artists and musicians: Dougie MacLean, Runrig, Scocha, Karen Matheson, Capercaillie, Blair Douglas, Arthur Cormack and many more. I love your music!

  • Thanks for putting this online! I was in the Golden Eagles Marching Band and the Gael was my favorite song that we played during the finale!

  • I love all of them, but onli no some of them heehee yous are mazin x

  • I was there in the west section. God... you could feel the bass in the drums when the pipers marched by you. What a fantastic memory, I'll never forget it.

  • the song is not called last of the mohicans you dumb yanks, its a scottish song called th gael

  • stupid americans

  • Hey! I knew that and I'm an American. We're not ALL dumb yanks. Percentage wise, about the same as Britain, I suppose. We are a bigger country. This message brought to you by University educated Hoosiers. INDIANA UNIVERSITY PURDUE UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME BALL STATE UNIVERSITY INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY EVANSVILLE UNIVERSITY DEPAW UNIVERSITY ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY All this and more in one small American State. I like Brits. I wouldn't call them stupid.
  • The tattoo back home in Rochester, NY, is impressive. I have to see the real deal, though, someday, in Scotland.

As for "The Last of the Mohicans", that was a movie based upon the James Fenimore Cooper novel, of the same name. It was filmed in North Carolina, and is loosely based upon true events from the Seven Years' War, aka, the French and Indian War. The novel takes place in what is today Upstate, NY, in and around the Adirondack Mountains.

  • Cant wait until next year ... bring on 2009

  • This just gets better and better the more I hear it...how proud must the families of those soldiers be? Brings me close to tears everytime!

  • This without a doubt the best moment of the military tattoo this year. This song was just absolutely overwhelming. It left a mark on my soul. I alternated between chills and tears, the whole song!

  • beautiful piece of music! heard it in the streets every day i was in edinburgh during the tatoo!

  • absolute spine tingling brilliance!

  • i love the pipes and drums when they play together

  • ive got chills

  • The piece of music is called 'The Gael' not sure who its written by, not sure if it has anything to do with New York though. Clan an Drumma do an amazing cover of it though.

  • I have Clann na Drumma playing this on cd. Its probably the best piece of pipe music I have ever heard. Clannad sang a lot of the music for the film. But look up Clan na drumma

  • Yea, it was done by Dougie Maclean, only 'adapted' by Trevor Jones. Seems strange that they credit the film as opposed to the tunes Scottish roots!

  • 2 mins 48 secs in .... absolutely awesome

  • Yes, absolutely fantastic! You can hear this on the BBC iplayer website. Just put 'Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2008' in the search field and you're there (advance it to 46 minutes in and turn up the speaker volume)

  • i was there!!!!!! but on the 9th of august and it was fantastic!!!

  • NeoFalcon69 this is Not the place to , show your Ignorance of History, please use the many search engines on the net, to enlighten yoursef,

  • I must apologize. I will do some research on the topic.

However I find the benefit of knowing the significance of the reason behind such a beauiful piece.

However I thank for your blunt but true opinion.

  • one of the most beautiful pieces of music i have ever heard! thankyou for uploading XD. that clever fiddle player! :D

  • what a superb song. does anyone have the bagpipe sheet music to this?

  • Wow beauiful and deeply touching.

I believe the song is about something a war in the British Province of New York (New York State America) during the French/Indian war. I'm not sure but if someone could pick the pieces together.

  • My dad is Lieutenant Colonel Chris Davis and i was sat pritty much where this film was taken. it was an amzing night!!!

  • i play sousaphone (tuba) in the Golden Eagles (american band) and playing this song in front of 10,000 people and flaming torches at my back is possibly the most amazing experience ive ever had

  • Yes, absolutely fantastic! You can hear this on the BBC iplayer website. Just put 'Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2008' in the search field and you're there (advance it to 46 minutes in and turn up the speaker volume)

  • I was there for the matinee performance on Saturday. This was just brilliant - whoever arranged this piece for a military band with bagpipes, is a musical genius. I can't even begin to describe the emotions that it inspired, and witnessing it live in front of the castle - ah, I had goosebumps...

  • I was there, it was WONDERFUL!!!

  • My husband is in that RM band - he plays the cornet. I couldn't go up and see him so thanks so much for posting your vids. x

  • I think this is round about where I was sitting when I went this year. This was my favourite song though. :) Beautiful.
