Children of Bodom is melodic death metal, with some black metal and thrash influences.

Fields of the Nephilim, Southern Death Cult, Siouxie and the Banshees, Christian Death, U.K. Decay or Bauhaus might have made better examples of Gothic rock.

Alternatively, if you wanted to go for a more Gothic/Symphonic Metal approach, then you could try Tristania or Nightwish, or perhaps (in a pinch) Cradle of Filth.

Don't get me wrong, I consider myself a Goth, and I love all three genres.

@Istancow Tristanis plays Gothic metal you have that right. Nightwish play Symphonic power metal. Symphonic metal as a whole came from Power and Prog metal band wanting there sound to be more like a film score. And early bands such as Savatage and Therion have nothing to do with the Gothic metal.

If you listen objectively, the only differences are that Symphonic has more prominent synthesizer and orchestral usage (thus the name) and more virtuoso guitar riffage (a remnant of power metal). Also, Gothic Metal is somewhat softer than Symphonic Metal. But they definitely fall under the same general category.
