If you connect in Series, THe voltage will add up but the current will be same as the minimun current from a solar cell. That why covering one cell along will affect the entire current output. If you connect in parallel, current will add up but the voltage remain the same as the minimun voltage from a single cell. The same goes for battery. That why never put a old battery together with a new one.
