I almost kill myself....But,When I hear this,I can hear the voice....You must live....This world is so beautiful and wonderful...I cryed so much....How ,,,,,beautiful....
I plead ignorance to any recent performances by Martha Argerich. I think she was brilliant in this segment. The piece is pretty by itself and especially as she plays it. It should be enjoyed the way it was meant to be enjoyed - full with emotion. As far as many of the demeaning critics I have seen on this page, all I can say is, if you have not studied the piano and have not played (or attempted to play) this piece, please keep your comments to yourself. Thank you.
Could anybody tell me if she still plays thiis piece nowadays? I heard her live when she first played it, back in 1985 or so, at the time of this recording. It was trully amazing, specially the solo passages, as the piano get drowened by the heavy orchestra many times in live performances...The cadenza was really unbelievable...The octaves and chords came down so fast that it all sounded like a wave had gone through our ears! And the warmth of the lyric passages...Unforgetable...
@MrBrobdingnagian Why do you feel compelled to use a message board devoted to a great performance of this beautiful piece of music as a public forum for displaying your anger? Grow up - if you want to fight, go to a boxing gym or get a job as a newscaster on Fox News.
@swiftianhumor HaHa - i thought you were serious at first, but now I realize you are just parodying all those inarticulate nutjobs who like to fill every comment page with gibberish.
@MrBrobdingnagian Yeah,I know something about Rachmaninov's music))) More than you can imagine. I'm professional musician, and besides I live in Russia. Worry about your own grammar and chill out - that"s the best choice
There are not enough words in the English language the express how incredible this is!! Every time I listen to this I get tears in my eyes...there's just so much passion in her playing :)
@rva25 I have checked his 1970 recording with Rozhdestvensky. He has great virtuosity, but not the intensity and deep emotion that Argerich brings to this concerto.
@rigel48 Matter of taste of course.. well, Argerich is great, that's for sure, but her Rachmaninov is not exactly what Rachmaninov really wanted.. for me at least. She plays too emotional, sometimes too sharply I would say. Horacio's first movement isn't great either -sounds too technically, but the second one and especially final - best of all Rachmaninov's third I've ever heard.
@SSGist This is a great performance, but in my opinion the best ever performance was Ashkenazy with the LSO,Andre Previn conducting.I think the recording was made for the Decca label around about 1971
@philmixer Ashkenazy??? I've heard tha name before. He plays a preludio number 3 from the WTC II, very good! I check his performance on the Rach 3! Thanks!
Finns det över 10 stjärnor skulle jag sätta det. Den bästa inspelningen någonsin av Rachs tredje. Ungefärs som Usains Bolts 10,58 på hundra. Blir aldrig övertfräffad
@0casteloencantado0 there's an anecdotal story that she fell asleep, and her sister practiced on the piano, and then she knew the piece and just played it flawlessly!
This has been my favourite performance of the work ever since I bought it on CD nearly 20 years ago. Yes, the technical virtuousity is incredible, but Argerich conveys such energy and poetry. Most other performances sound earth-bound after you've listened to this.
@gonrolgonrol Not at all. Argerich is one of the greatest interpreters of this concerto. It's just so poorly filmed. We see more of Chailly. Very frustrating.

at 6:30 when she is taking over the orchestra she is changing the speed in a horrible manner...
I can't but agree with piano critic Piero Rattalino writing that "she is still playing like in the piano competitions years after. Like a marine crossing an open field by shooting everywhere like crazy, launching bombs and falling down dead only after having killed all the enemies. Let's hope that with age she will learn to cross the enemy filed silently, with calm, discretion and acuteness."
@3BoMc Hmm. As far as I can tell, your comment has given me no reason whatsoever to dislike Argerich. For calm, I'd go to, say Brendel and Uchida, who have a fantastically introspective and inflected style of playing. I come to Argerich because I want to listen to something agressive, temperemental, brash, primordially powerful. She plays this perfectly in the spirit of this piece -- haven't you listened to Rachmaninoff's own ultra-edgy recording?
@3BoMc I also do not appreciate your criticism (I assume it is one, because you never explain why) about hte tempi changes. The tension between soloist and orchestra is one of the crucial dramatic elements of this concerto, and Argerich is hardly indulgent in the perticular tempo change you specify. Rachmaninoff fully approved of fairly drastic tempi changes in his own performances. Who on earth crosses an enemy field silently? This concerto is meant to be loud and spectacular.
@3BoMc Study this music, then criticize her. The score says to go faster, and at parts it says to accell. As long as it is exciting, that is all that matters.
there are so many imperfect moments in this performance, but you can never judge martha argerich one moment at a time - you have to soak up the performance as a whole. the overall picture is astounding...this is my favorite recording of rach 3 and i listen to it all the time.

The women are outnumbering the men as the greatest pianists in the world...yes, yes, yes....hurray,hurray, hurray......and they are absolutely beautiful.....
She is a real goddess in this video and she is so beautiful and passionate ...
I want to hear her ardour playing the Brahms concertos as TRUE romantic pieces, and not as sterile classical masterpieces, the way they are usually played.
@luisfcoliveira i don't think her muscles are built very big, but they are just toned hard out because of her insane piano playing, so she must have crazy dexterity in her hands too.
If you get to a high level as a female pianist you will probably develop strong muscles under your forearms. All the better to produce that lovely full-bodied and powerful tone she has! :)
She has such an amazing freedom in her playing. It is full of brightness and clarity when necessary and so tender when needed. Even though, in my opinion, it is on the faster side of the tempo, I enjoy her playing every time I listen to it.... real artist! You have to hear her Gaspar - it is amazing!!!
@Hervinbalfour ... many would suggest that prokofiev #2 is more difficult -- but it's all open to debate ... and really, what does it matter if they are all sensationally good :)
This is the most diffucult piece to play for piano. PERIOD. And she plays it almost perfectly. In fact, this is the best recording of the concerto you can find. I know there are great pianists out there such as Artur Rubinstein and Vladimir Horowitz. But I must insist that Martha Argerich is the best pianist to walk the earth.
I agree with you 101%! After listening to other version, including even Mr Rach's own playing, I think I still love Martha's version.... Her powerful and accurate performance especially at the finale which is so so difficult is simply amazing!
It's not the hardest piece. Opus Clavicembalisticum by Sorabji is far harder than this (it goes for 4 -5 hours!). You can't just say something is the hardest - someone can just come along write something harder. However, I have to agree - this is a good recording.
Not really - I was just pointing out that you can't simply say something is the hardest unless of course you have seen every single other piece in the entire world (in which case you would have every right to say that).
i think what most people mean by saying this is the hardest piece is that its one of the hardest pieces that people actually want to play and is in the common repertoire
Who is "OC", and do you think this person's music has "no musical worth" BECAUSE of its atonal modality, or for other reasons? I've heard some completely atonal compositions which i've found intellectually stimulating, and a few which i felt communicated discernable, genuine emotions rather well.
OC is Opus Clavicembalisticum. It's musical worth entirely relies on the listener's musical palate. You wouldn't give Webern to a starting piano student because they wouldn't understand it and would hate playing it for others. There's no point playing it for an audience who doesn't get that it's supposed to sound dissonant. And, yes, emotions can be expressed via atonality but as I said, new listeners to music won't hear that emotion.
i agree with bith of you 10000000% :P i love argerich! i saw her live in dublin a couple of months back playin prokofiev 3! it was incredible! long live argerich :D

What is this, a competition?

Not really - I was just pointing out that you can't simply say something is the hardest unless of course you have seen every single other piece in the entire world (in which case you would have every right to say that).

i think what most people mean by saying this is the hardest piece is that its one of the hardest pieces that people actually want to play and is in the common repertoire

OC is atonal and has no musical worth unless the listeners are veterens of extrememly dissonant music.
