talk about a wolf in sheeps clothing, although I've never seen a 350 hp sheep. Way to not be a sheeple, you do subie proud, how the forrester xt should have been.
@thebighammer69 It's a much tougher job converting a non-turbo Forester to an STI turbo Forester. As far as I know, the compression is slightly different and a few other things. For an FXT, it's replace the turbo, replace the intercooler (maybe consider other cooling methods), reprogram the computer. Now you have to consider upgrading the braking, handling, but you can reasonably hit numbers like low-300HP and have it be a daily driver. Replacing my turbo at the moment.

Oh STI this STI that, fuck that 2.5. Build a 2.2T and get yourself a real bulletproof engine. Better yet throw a couple of 2.2 heads on a 2.5, that would be even more badass!
If you knew what you were talking about in the realm of subaru heads you would not be telling people to put 2.2l heads on to anything just because they suck that terribly. the best flowing heads subaru has ever made are the single cam 2.5l heads.
You can get the "STI" in Japan, Australia and U.K. :) STI build only right-hand drive versions of the car, so we "left-handers" have to learn how to shift with the left hand... ;)
It was sold exclusively in Japan, but it's been sold in the UK as a grey import. The steering wheel is on the right side, so it should fit like a glove to you Aussies (lucky bastards). The car is pretty rare in Japan too btw.
my question seems to keep slipping out of your reply... can i obtain an STI in australia????? farout if its rare in japan (where it was exclusively sold) how will i find it here?
Yes and no. First, i'd say no. You can get an XT, and then improve the up pipe, down pipe, exhaust, intake, some ECU tuning, and a slightly upgraded turbo, bigger intercooler etc. Then you're in STI territory. You'll still have the 5 speed instead of a 6 speed unless you upgrade that, too.
No, the only factory turbocharged vehicles from Subaru in the US are: Impreza (WRX/STi), Legacy hmm. Yeah, that's about it. I have no idea why they don't bring more STi models to the US but lets just blame it on bureaucrats and tree huggers and people who perform biased market studies.
I hadn't realized that till recently actually. My bad. Still wish my 2000 Forester L was turbo'd. Think an EJ20T swap would pass emissions inspections?
ok first off "duceduceexplorer" i have a forester with Sti suspension and it's been measured as well and it's exactly a 2 inch drop in the rear and 21/4 in the front. and "stalepriest" you go drive your dads mustange gt or whatever and get owned by a forester cuz you will. AND "ilovebeer79" they do handle like crap stock but catch up on your reading and you'll realize the 04 forester is LIGHTER than an 04 sti haha chump! oh and ahansen77 sti swap?? 04 FXT COMES with exactly the same shortblock!
I'm sorry but your basing that on your own opinion without probably knowing full well what that car is..whats its based on and what its like to drive...dont.
if you have an XT already the engine is the same as the STi, just upgrade to the stock turbo, intercooler and computer from the 04 Sti and you'll have 300hp instantly. Parts are available cheap on ebay and enthusiast forums, just keep an eye out for someone selling their stock stuff after ugrading to aftermarket stuff. Best part is your faster with stock reliability.
There are differences in the STI Engine compared to the standard forester. The heads are slightly different and they have bigger exhaust ports and exhaust manifolds.
ANYTHING can be done if you have enough money, but it can't be done on a small budget, you'd need a full STi motor/trans/ecu/harness, etc and someone with skills to fabricate motor mounts and custom brackets.
Thanks a lot, I just saw an sti engine for sale on ebay...I'll keep this in mind for future references. As a sidenote though, I doubt my '98 model is a turbo if that matters...
nice forester quite prefer them to imprezas coz there just different ma impreza has a vf34 turbo and the exhaust 3" straight all the way throught with a decat running 345bhp to the wheels n e way nice forester hope to own one soon
based on my 12.8 1/4 mi i'd say about 4 sec 0-60, maybe a little less....the launches in the video's were terrible though because I still had my bald tires on.
gotta abit lag in it my mate got one rips shit bets wrx 2door/hacth/wagon sti's goes nuts in 2nd 3rd gear you should put a screamin pipes on wld sound wicked
nope, i'm in NJ...good ole' U.S. of A. It began life as a 2.5XT, I just converted it to an STi & have some JDM STi body kit on the way now too. I'm probably going to paint it WR Blue. ;-)

Buy a salvage sti and take everything, it's about 10k to do it yourself, around 15 to have it done by a shop. Not worth it IMO.

anyone know if a jdm legacy gt engine could be swapped into a forester with a 5-speed tranny?

No, it doesn't fit. One of the turbos would hit the master cyl. Otherwise it would have been badass!

The Forester is factory turbo charged too. You just have to get the 2.5 XT.

You can most definitely get a Forester w/ a turbo in the US. I believe it's the GXT and the new ones are XT's. Twin scroll turbo too!
