Sung the way it was meant to be sung with superb breath control. I understand what FeuilledAcanthe is expressing, I so admire Alva but I don't find his an inherently beautiful voice. He is a great artist and musical but it's his elegance and technique that create his supremacy rather than a basically gorgeous instrument.
I sang for him in a studio class in Greece in 1991. His voice was great then as well, and he is a charming person. A great teacher, and a superb artist.
It's interesting to me that Juan Diego Florez is also from Peru and has a light tenor voice as well. I wonder if he Florez ever studied with Luigi Alva. I would be interested in what others are thinking about the two of them.
JDF studied with Ernesto Palacio, another peruvian light liric tenor who is his actual manager... sure Luigi Alva is a sort of inspiration for JDF but nothing more, I think.
Così non ne nascono più. Purtroppo.

What a gift. Alba was a true "tesoro". And what a poise! Makes me wish I had been around in Aix-en-provence in 1960!

Not my favorite, by the second best Don Octavio. His breath is a wonder, but something in his voice is bothering me.

@vivegedda Wunderlich (and many others) are wonderful, but Alva remains the definitive Don Ottavio, in my opinion. :)

Alva, Palacio, Juan Diego Flores, Alejandro Granda, Yma Sumac, probably the best Peruvian singers
