Leopold Stokowski conducts the 1st Movement of Brahms' 4th Symphony ('live')

REALLY nice! The old master (Leopold), and "his" New Philharmonia (of this time) respond, SO-greatly, to the felicities, inner rhythms, and the best parts of this, immortal score. There's a bit of impetuousness - Stokowski-style ... but it's a true ADDITION to the classicism of Brahms's score. So, thanks, also, to MartinPadderborn, for his comments, about, the concert, itself!

I was fortunate to have been at this concert and it was one of the greatest musical experiences in my life.To see that little old man raise his arm and then release all of Brahms' golden power into a packed Albert Hall was immensely moving. Listening to it now, I hear a few moments of loss of clarity but the old magician always gets back on track and produces one of the most outstanding performances ever of this great symphony.

This comes from Stokowski's last UK concert in the Royal Albert Hall when he was 94 years old! One of his biographers says that Stokowski was worried about slowing down in his old age, so he compensated by sometimes taking things rather faster than usual. That was far better than letting the music drag! For me, it's one of the great Brahms 4ths and was issued on a BBC Legends CD.

A masterful performance, but a little fast(?) and the balance is a bit too much in favour of the brass sometimes, I think. Some good touches but not very sensitive always.
