@randallmckay Hidden inside every Kata are multiple applications to actual combat scenario's, it's only when you see the applications (or Bunkai) that you will see the true meaning of Kata. They should be performed as if in real combat or they may as well be dance routines, if they Karateka is not our of breath on completion then they have not put the effort into it.
Initially Kata were forms of exercise, also thought to have been methods to learn, remember and teach several applications.
Sorry it was an insane kata, but the last kiah made me laugh. I feel jealous of his power, I used to have a fraction of that when i was trainin seriously. Guys do you know what type of training he does other than karate, I want to become at doing jion better than this guy, It sorta makes me feel as if i am wasting my life by not training.
Kishnabe - He also does Yang style Tai Chi Chuan and is ranked highly as an instructor. There are many good interviews with him that you can find using Google.
Wow! so powerful and snappy, so so slick, incredible kime. I learnt it with one jodan and two chudan two, depends on which organisation you're with, JKA probably teach it as 3 chudan punches. It's one sweet kata though.
Dear Orbelus. your Kanazawa kata vids have been absolutely priceless in my learning-ive spent many hours on my laptop with the living room furniture pushed to one side.Thank you so much jf
who says comic books don't have any educational value? I learned something today from watching that brand new green lantern cartoon movie; "this weapon has a flaw, all weapons have; its user."
Pretty heavy stuff; when you think about it, the truth is, every weapon is in fact perfect. Even martial arts, the techniques I mean; its the USERS, who are flawed. All weapons serve their purpose, and they are therefore "perfect."
That is exactly the point made in that new animated "Green Lantern" movie. You should watch it its pretty interesting; although its made for 13 year olds, it makes a lot of good points regarding what law enforcement should be.
The Green Lanterns are basically cops dude; albeit, cops who use very advanced alien technology.
Osu,What a Legend. The timing, execution of technique is really amazing. This is how Kata should be practiced. Not 1 million miles per hour without any idea what one is doing.Kancho Kanazawa is a living legend in the Shotokan world.
Amazing! We've been going through Jion at training for a while now, I still haven't managed to remember it all yet though, I can only remember as far as the high block step forward punch... At least I don't have to really worry about it for a loooong time yet. :)
When a kata is well performed, one can not only see a high level of skill in its performance but also a high level of understanding. Both are present here.
I was taught that this is Oizuki Sonbon Tsuki. One jodan and 2 chudan or 1 high puch to the head and 2 torso punches. That is how I was taught though.
that coming from someone who is yet to understand the true meaning of karate, hiphopkarategirl101. i'm a dedicated karate ka and even i don't understand it. karate teaches us to respect others, especially our elders. haven't your instructor(s) taught you that?
If u are saying he isent doing it right it will have to be because u train a defferent style of shotokan... U cant do it better cuz it wont get better than this, if we are talking shotokan.
all u fake ass bitchez , kanazawa is one of the best , today he is like 70 years or something. u wish u could do kata like him. bet u see him in a tournament and youll shit bricks.hiphop girl stop hatin because hes jap. u americanized karate is weak sauce and thes recgnized 10 dans he is nakayama. hoe can u say hes bad form . he studied under gichin funakoshi the father of karate. to all u fakers thinking u the best hers a fun fact in the 60she entered kumite wit a broken hand and won first
as u mentioned (see "ENPI") Is it your instructors who dismiss his technical excellence and his grade,or is that your 7 years of experiance talking there lady...?
Did you ever stop to think this was a training video? If you know anything about Shotokan you may want to pay a little respect. Or have they not taught you that yet?
hahaha MetalicaRedsox7 have you hurd your self id like to see u in a fight wiv Hirokazu Kanazawa, he would make u look like sum shit, even tho you probly are
Hey Metalica, You should be moved back to white. Obviously you have you not learned anything. And for knowing your Kata .... you my know which way to turn but I doubt if you know any kata yet.
and with that attitude you will always be a yellow belt. I'm a first Kyu and I have to know and practice randomly all the heian kata's + the techi, bassai dai, jiin, and start to learn all the blackbelt ones.
And he probably learned it when he was a yellow belt as well. Black belts are responsible for knowing all katas before their present ones, I don't see what's so funny...
wow, i havent learned this kata yet, and im a shodan. i am currently working on wanshu, which i have some timing issues on this one move. did ya pass your test? oh i take wado-ryu karate-do by the way. this video is real good, kanazawa is a great man.
Kanku Dai is probably the hardest out of Bassadai, Jion and Enpi, but it is well worth it when you can finally nail it. Its the longest kata in Shotokan.
really! i didn't know it was the longest! yeah, ive watched my friend learn Kanku Dai because she just got her black belt and she said it takes a whole lot of practice. lve also seen black belts do Kanku Dai for tournaments and it really blows me away how good they are!
yea, i take wado ryu, snd we call your versoin of kanku dai, kusanku. its a long kata, and it takes endless practice to get it down right. but its a fun kata! good luck with it.
well... what you see in this video doesn't show anything then... i've seen people perform jion hundreds of times, and this performance done here isn't any special... Maybe, he can be the greatest fighter, but im 100% sure that THIS jion can be performed by anyone.
Being Nakayama's highest ranking student, Kanazawa was promoted to 10th Dan in 2000.
He also won the All-Japan Karate Tournament 3 years in a row. If you don't belive this man deserves to be 10th Dan, either you don't practice Martial Arts, or you aren't a true Karateka.

Z1mlok... every kata has its meaning and every kiai as well. Just think about the two kiais in Sochin. The last kiai is meant to be very short. The same is true about the only kiai in Wankan.
ian599...your a brown and two white and you still havent learned jion?...ShotokanKarateRules..i can't answer your question about Funkoshi's students but i do know that Mikami Sensei is still alive..and he is a student of Funakoshi's student..he teaches in louisiana..

what is the practicality of doing these moves when in a real fight? Just curious. It looks more like dancing than real attacks or defense.

quite profound, actually; lately I've developed a philosophy that meditation is in fact more important than martial arts training.
If the user is flawed, then what good is the weapon?
It is the USER, that needs to be perfected, not the weapon.
And you perfect yourself, through meditation.
Who says there is no wisdom in entertainment? It was only a kernel in what was otherwise a movie for 13 year olds but, pretty heavy stuff.
