in my mind this is the only duel in the old trilogy that can stand up to the new. while some duels such as old ben vs vader and even luke vs vader in episode 6 have lost their luster over the years this duel is as epic now as it was when it was released.

However, a possible "story answer" is that he was so shocked that Luke would choose to sacrifice himself over joining the dark side. He clearly didn't think Luke would do that, because he said, "Come with me, it is the ONLY way."

If that's the way you feel about it, then you've missed the point entirely. Lightsaber duels (at least in the Original Trilogy) had less to do with the fight choreography, and more to do with internalization of the characters. It wasn't about doing a bunch of video game shit. It's why the Original lightsaber battles have always been better than the Prequel battles. Cause there was a deeper meaning behind them.

It would have been great without that forced idea about them being friends...but since the original trilogy says they were friends, then there was no choice. One thing the prequels did do well is that you see how common force badassery used to be when the Jedi still had a Jedi Order, and afterwards seeing this scene again I realized just how over his head and overconfident Luke really was in thinking he had a chance here.

I grew up watching the Star Wars trilogy; however, it does get old. At the time this lightsaber-fight scene was made, it was awe-inspiring, but it has been surpassed by those from "Revenge", which are more intense, realistic and fantastical. In addition, while the original trilogy centers on thrills and fun, the "Revenge" is among the first and heaviest in the Sci-fi genre in dealing with personal losses and how it twisted a tormented mind. BTW, John Williams' composition in "Anakin's Dark Deed

I don't like how the prequels were directed but the plotline/backstory was great and very compelling.

Obi-Wan aged a lot and probably mentally tortured himself over Anakin, and Vader's in the suit. Any way he was more involved with A New Hope than the Return of the Jedi but still A New Hope was better. Revenge of the Sith was okay, but the rest of the prequels were crap. If Lucas does anything else to these films, it should be to the lightsabers in the first two films (especially ANH). Just if he could make them look a bit "fuller", or maybe a little more "rounded" is a better term.
@Jedmac90 the reason the blades dont look as full is because of the force level and its sighnificance with each character,..Luke's blade was thinner simply because his skills weren't as fine tuned as they should be,...however because of what we know from episode 2 - 3 and the prophecy...Luke in this episode was already a jedi.....thats what yoda tried telling him

One thing the prequels did do well is that you see how common force badassery used to be when the Jedi still had a Jedi Order, and afterwards seeing this scene again I realized just how over his head and overconfident Luke really was in thinking he had a chance here.

Empire is the one movie that does everything right that is great about Star Wars.
4 is a big B-Movie, 6 is goofy, and 1-3 are just bad. But Empire really is a great movie, and this is THE best scene in all Star Wars.

I grew up watching the Star Wars trilogy; however, it does get old. At the time this lightsaber-fight scene was made, it was awe-inspiring, but it has been surpassed by those from "Revenge", which are more intense, realistic and fantastical. In addition, while the original trilogy centers on thrills and fun, the "Revenge" is among the first and heaviest in the Sci-fi genre in dealing with personal losses and how it twisted a tormented mind. BTW, John Williams' composition in "Anakin's Dark Deed

Do you notice how there is hardly any jumping, no back flips 200 times, stupid moves. Just pure slog out fighting. Thats why these are better then the new ones. No amount of CGI and 100000 monsters and silly scripting can take away the fact this was a million times better.

The prequels had to develop the whole world by scratch, in Empire everything had already happened and they just had to deal with getting everything back like the Good Ol' Days. Different developing.

@VinylSamuraisMusic There was no jumping and such (which made the prequel fights better/ entertaining and heartbreaking the terms of Revenge of the Sith) because Vader lost his agility with his suit (he couldn't raise up his arms above his head and had to make a new fighting style) , and lost about 50% of his Force power as well, and Luke was an amateur and didn't know anything about the Jedi. I don't like how the prequels were directed but the plotline/backstory was great and very compelling.

@VinylSamuraisMusic And that's also why it's kinda funny to watch Obi-Wan and Vader duel in A New Hope, because it's nothing compared to the ending RotS fight. Obi-Wan aged a lot and probably mentally tortured himself over Anakin, and Vader's in the suit. I like that the prequels are dark and the orginals are more light-hearted because the back story had to be dark..

@tubbysidney Actually he DID write the story of all six movies. He just didn't direct all of them. Any way he was more involved with A New Hope than the Return of the Jedi but still A New Hope was better. Revenge of the Sith was okay, but the rest of the prequels were crap. So it's not that George Lucas CAN'T make movies, he just forgot how to and has a terrible editing disorder.

If Lucas does anything else to these films, it should be to the lightsabers in the first two films (especially ANH). Just if he could make them look a bit "fuller", or maybe a little more "rounded" is a better term.

@Jedmac90 the reason the blades dont look as full is because of the force level and its sighnificance with each character,..Luke's blade was thinner simply because his skills weren't as fine tuned as they should be,...however because of what we know from episode 2 - 3 and the prophecy...Luke in this episode was already a jedi.....thats what yoda tried telling him
