At the Wimbledon semifinal Venus took her out in an hour and some change. She's only won tier 1 tournaments in doubles
God Serena is funny. Everyone though after her US Open tantrum last year she's be hated but she just got more respect as it added more entertainment to the sport. The fact is, Safina played well in more tournaments and therefore for a longer time than Serena that year. Had Serena played in as many tournaments, she might have earned enough to be #1. But the point is, she didn't. So, no one will ever know. She might've gotten tired and sucked had she played more tournaments than she did, which is perhaps a sign of good intuition. But again the fact remains, Safina played well consistently and Serena didn't that year. So, fail on you, Williams. Fail on you.

I love Serena and I always will...this was a great interview but people fail to realized is that she is also reacting to the press...they are laughing louder and before she does...Serena held 3 Slams which is 6000 points and Safina won Rome and Madrid which is 3000 and also Safina won smaller tournaments and went deep in the bigger ones...Serena is not a clay court player...she does move ok on the clay but she does not use the proper spin for clay, Tennis is 70% mental... and Serena believes.

@gercc89 Safins reached number 1 because she played lower tiered events where there wasn't a lot of competition and she easily racked up points. However, when she got to tier 1 tournaments and played top ten players she buckled ridiculously! At the Aussie open final Serena took her out in less than an hour. At the Wimbledon semifinal Venus took her out in an hour and some change. She's only won tier 1 tournaments in doubles

God Serena is funny. Everyone though after her US Open tantrum last year she's be hated but she just got more respect as it added more entertainment to the sport. Everyone always thinks that tennis is like an etiquette sport but there is a lot of exitement as well. People like Serena and Venus have helped the sport grow and make people proud to be a part of it. Sharapova is another one of my favourites as she brings excitement back to the court. Hope she wins US open

The fact is, Safina played well in more tournaments and therefore for a longer time than Serena that year. Had Serena played in as many tournaments, she might have earned enough to be #1. But the point is, she didn't. So, no one will ever know. She might've gotten tired and sucked had she played more tournaments than she did, which is perhaps a sign of good intuition. But again the fact remains, Safina played well consistently and Serena didn't that year. So, fail on you, Williams. Fail on you.

Is Serena a really good player? Of course. Is she the best player on the WTA? Right now, yes...she's #1.
Should she have been number 1 when Dinara was? No, because she was #2. When you make excuses as to why you should be #1, you look like an idiot and a sore loser. Consistency is part of any sport and that's what she lacks. She doesn't play in many tournaments and she didn't play as many tournaments as Safina when Safina was #1.

Stop lying against Samantha Stosur Serena hit several double faults which is rare. But you know what Stosur LOST the French Open final proving that she is just another flake! This is the problem with women's tennis after Serena, Henin, Venus, Clijsters, Sharapova at the slams most of the women can't handle pressure. Stosur was the favourite to win the French Open but she failed against an inspired Francesca Schiavone!

I think this video may have sent Safina into her downward spiral. She's lost early in the grand slams she's played and been injured. But I think she really believed what Serena said and it killed her confidence. But who cares, I love Serena!

@portastella. I know she's not a clay court player but she has won the French. When Safina got to the two finals, she collapsed. Nobody watches the smaller clay tournaments and Safina feels no pressure but when the pressure is on, she crumbles. Serena loves the big stage and that's why she is way better than Safina and is now #1. Safina is outside the top 20 now. Winning Rome and Madrid won't help her get back to the top and she doesn't belong there anyway.

Clay may be her weakest surface, yes, but 5 of the last 8 GS, plus the year-end Championships, clearly makes her the best. Reputations & legacies are built on GS titles, not on small tourney titles or finals/semis appearances. And in that department, Serena has most everyone beat. maybe she shuld get up for smaller tourneys & try harder, but at the end of the day GS are what count most

@porta123stella: Serena doesnt have to care about those smaller tourneys b/c she knows that legacies are built on how many grand slams u win, not how many "Romes" & "Madrids" Plus early in her career, Serena won all those little small tourneys, now she gets up for the big ones b/c they matter most. Safina has shrunk under the pressure each time she had the opportunity, yet Serena has proven to be the best given that she's won 5 of the last 8 GS. And she won the french, so she does well on clay

She was no 1, partly because Henin and Clijsters quit, Sharapova was injured and Serena was lacking commitment. Serena has seen a possibility of getting into record books and that drives her. She has that special something that Evert, Navratilova, Graff, Seles and Billie Jean King had. She has a total belief that she can win and be number one and she belongs there. It was terrible for Safina.

Dinara is having problems mentally/physically, and is nowhere on the tour unfortunately, she's sinking FAST.
Serena WAS right. She is the true #1 in the WTA, and driving to capture her 2nd Wimbledon. She keeps playing like she has been this week, I see NO ONE beating her. Not even Venus, and Venus is playing very well at the moment.

@RangeRover1961 I think Ivanovic has gone that way too, she seemed terrifiied of being No1 and sank down. I think Serena has peaked again and though the US Open she has only won three times, Clijsters, Venus, Stouser and those that are weak on grass may challenge her, which is good for the game. Venus knows she couldn't have beaten Venus, she seems very upset at Wimbledon, she left before the final. She has never done that before. I hope she can win the US Open 2010. And Safina will come back.

@porta123stella You obviously misunderstood. Yes, Stosur was good and was outplaying Serena, however, Serena wasn't playing her best! By the way, Safina doesn't do very well at slams! At the Aussie Open, and Wimbledon she played less than an hour and was blown off course! Safina gets a lot of her ranking points by playing tier 3 vodka tournys with no real competition so she breezes through.

Stouser clearly is not good on grass but brilliant on hard court and clay.
Safina is a head case, in her brother's shadow and with pushy mother. She was thrashed by Venus at Wimbledon, at the French Open, Safina would most likely win outside of a final. It is by playing many tournments Safina got points and a winning streak. She does care about them, so do the other players, they are bread and butter.

I highly doubt that Safina will ever win a grand slam, when she finally gets to play players that have skills, she's blasted off the court.

I do feel for Dinara though. So much pressure was put on her, and she psyched herself out. She's now also injured. Not sure where Dinara goes from here.

I get Serena's point and it is funny but the reason Dinara was number 1 there was not only because she won Rome and Madrid but because she reached the final of the Australian Open and the French Open too. I think the ranking system is quite fair really, at the end of the day you get 2000 points for winning a slam which is much more than any other tournament.
