@coons1212 If you clearly look at the video, he is nowhere near the mic while cupping around his mouth. Cupping works the same way, basically, as the mouthpiece of a brass instrument. You create a small sound chamber to get a specific sound using the close proximity to the diaphragm of the microphone in order to get said results. He's a good 4-6 inches away from the SM7 set up to record his vocals. Therefore, he is cupping his mouth, not the mic.

No, there's a reason people say you shouldn't do certain things. Cupping the mic is a compensation for bad technique, and inhales sound like crap and damage your voice, that's why alex from CG learned to do exhales for the album. Only bad vocalists cup the mic. Mic cupping is to screaming, what autotune is to singing, an excuse for talentless hacks to make money.
