But it wasn't always that way - the North American dub of Pokemon (Indigo League) was freakin' awesome. They only cut what needed to be cut, and edited what needed to be edited. (flashing lights and patterns were mostly slowed down or removed completely to reduce seizures - the japanese are not as seizure prone as we are? I dunno... The episode with Porygon caused a seizure epidemic in Japan, so it never came here.)
