A combined Devastator would have been cool, too, but you can only do so much. I thought they made Megatron incredibly evil and terrifying. Him trasforming into a Cybertronian jet (again, because he didn't feel the need to take an earthly form), Devastator being a tank, and Soundwave being tiny all fit into the scope of a live-action Transformer universe. Also: Did anyone catch the inscription on Barricade's side? And kind of funny all the Autobots were GMs while Barricade was a Ford...

The producers had an exclusive deal with GM to use GM vehicles in the movie. They couldn't get permission from Ford to use the Mustang, so they used a custom one built by Saleen.

I think a lot of people are getting a little hard on the filmmakers here.  First of all, remember that the comic and cartoon Transformers universes didn't line up either. The movie had to be done in a "non-cartoony" way (no mass shifting, etc). I would have liked a Soundwave character, but a 33ft, 5 ton robot transforming into a CD player just wouldn't have been believable. Megatron didn't scan any Earth vehicles to "fit in" because he disdained everything to do with Earth.

i like the movie but have to agree i dont like the way Megatron and Starscream look. they look like insects, they say they are emphasizing the fact that theyre aliens by making them look other worldly but surely theyre missing the whole point of Transformers, yes they are aliens but they are aliens that have adapted a different look to blend in on earth. im sure they could have give them a more traditional robot look rather than making them look like Resident Evil creatures.

exactly Blackout, Barricade and Brawl look ok but then of all the characters its actually the two that we all have fondest memories of that they go and fuck up, i read on a website that Megatron looks like a chandelere lol i agree he really doesnt look like he poses much of a threat to the planet, im not saying his G1 transformation was appropriate for the film but they could have kept his look similar and still had him transform into somekind of cannon or tank or whatever

That's my whole point. The philosophy behind what went into making this movie is one huge hypocrisy. They say that they want to make these robots "realistic" and "believable", and they make them look like monsters that turn inside-out and then rightside-out again to transform. They think mass-shifting looks stupid, but aliens knowing Kung Fu is perfectly acceptable. :S
