you know, that amount of bricks a helmet wouldn't have mattered . seems most people are missing the point. that said policies would use a loop whole about it if he would've been gravely injured saying he failed to wear it. leaving his family with nothing. just the nature of our business brothers.remember hat, hands, feet. and yes i am aware its a video and yes ive been guilty of the same
American Firefighters are the best of the best.. I would bet you would have done the same thing. Like those firefighters could see the roof from where they were standing.
@kawasakikx250ff when you think about it... how much does a helmet save you. Debree that size will snap your neck at the very least. Yes they should have wore a helmet but even still it wouldnt have done any good in the given situation
i have always loved firefighters. they are badass and everyone thinks their job is easy. See what he did? he walked it off with a broken hand just like a real man would.
ok this vid i a good close call.. if you watch the end when that chimney callapsed you will see that 2 fire fighter didnt even have helmets on like wtf guys.. if ur going be be on scene during a working structure fire u should be in full ppd (turn out gear) that also includes a dam helmet.. bless ur soles that those men didnt get hurt
1st of all i'm glad everyones ok. not nit picking but we need to remember building construction and fire behavior. collapse is always a consideration (especially in well involved light weight structures), thats why we try and establish collapse zones. one thing that i saw though was no helmets! thats unacceptable whether your paid or volunteer! lets start using our heads for things other than catching bricks! safety is everyones goal! stay safe and take care of each other! EGH!!!!!
As stated we cant really armchair quarterback an incident we weren't at. Seems to me that there just aren't enough guys to handle that much fire and the crews there did the best they could with what they had. Hats off fellas.
PS why would you guys say to vent a roof that already vented itself.
it is easy to comment on the fires that had already happened and critique them. being in the situation at the present time sometimes decisions and actions are rushed due to the stress. anyway no one was hurt and as someone said in a comment before you just have to learn from it. ff
@firemanjam1 And a helmet would make half a ton of bricks and mortar bounce of your head. Good point though. I think they fell off when they turned and "run", well , walked.
wow shit hit the fan quickly there, guessing that room flashed? crazy how it walked into the roof from that window and took off. good time to back out, cause that shit is gonna collapse.
my god I thought it was a fireman falling . What the hell is so wrong with people these days . In the UK firemen sometimes have to have police protection from scum throwing bricks while they try to put out a fire somewhere . What the hell is happening to youth of today who think it's okay to threaten foremen and Ambulance people
@rme1181 OBVIOUSLY YOUR BALLS HAVEN'T DROPPED CAUSE IF YOU KNEW WHAT THE JOB IN-TITLED , I BET YOUR SISSY ASS WOULDN'T HAVE A CHANCE...GOTTA LOVE LOSERS LIKE YOU WHO TALK SHIT, MEANWHILE YOUR HOUSE GOES UP AND WHO YOU CALL " US"... posers come on now just because you can't do the job doesnt mean ya have to make fun of it how would you feel if that was your house and belongings not everything is always destroyed some things are spared. so before you start spouting off try the job first talk to the guys who do it. otherwise you should go by the old rule speak only when spoken too
no but you can let him know what you think, tell him that the building is about to collapse and that you and your fellow ff would be taking a lot of risk if you do, then he might listen to you or tell you to get you ass in the building.
@Airstrik3 At the same time, if he's at the ICP and you're in or headed into a bldg, you can see better than him if it's about to collapse. If you tell him you're bailing, just make damn sure you know it's coming down. He's not going to get pissed when your company is standing beside him and the building is on the ground, but if someone dies because you dipped and the building wasn't unsafe ie didn't collapse, hell should be to pay.
@vetitoe362- let me guess, your just a god given gift to firefighting right? if you even are one. you never make ANY mistakes at a call huh....you deserve a FUCKING medal son!!!
I never said anything about being gods gift to firefighting, or never making mistakes... But not wearing helmets that close to a shitty building is rediculous... You can go and get yourself fucked up if you want to, and if you live close I might come to your funeral.
a bunch of ppl not wearing there helmets? there was (1) fire fighter i seen with no helmet...and the other person at :28 doesnt even have gear on which tells me he isnt a FF..just a civilian.....
Some people are wondering why thies guys were just standing around. Its probobly because they were IC's or Saftey officers for the scene. The only problem i saw with this incedent is that they wernt wearing their helmets. It doesnt matter were u are at the scene. If ur at the scene and there is a fire still burning, u wear your helmet. I know even if their helmet was on and that hit them it wouldent save them. But if that was like a brick, and they got hit w/ their helmet on, they would live.
i have been a captain 6 of 21yr of service. these firefighter are doing just what they were asked to do and that is not go in and get killed. why would you drench the roof. all you see is some fire, the big fire is inside the house and most of the time you cant get to it from the roof. you must go in and work the fire or let the house go to the ground, but if it was me one house would go to the ground and all of my firefighter would get to see there homes at the end of there day
Yep, the risk factor. Risk alot to save alot. Risk little to save little. Dont put firefighters in a fully developed structure fire just to save property. Thats how they get killed.
wow i was just trying to figure y they werent drenching the dam roof with water just standing around. and the fire is not in the 2floor window its growing on the rooftop.
Well, they were letting the roof vent. Also, if they were to spray the roof down, it would just push the flames farther up, and and farther into the building. Interior attack is the best bet.
Interior attack.... empty house..... naw, it looked like the blunt of the fire was all secondstory so you wanted to send people in a fully involved second story and watch them fall through the floor and die? Let the roof vent take 2 1/2's to second story windows.... we all live and the house MIGHT have a little bit left.
wow if he just broke his hand then he literally cheated death if i did not read that caption i could of guessed he died from amount of weight that chimney was..that's some intense fire though
for the people who were saying they wernt wearing helmets, EVEN if they were, they would still have been killed by the force of the bricks, no helmet would keep you safe from that amount of weight coming down on you.
@PCnever What most don't understand about helmets is that they divert impact much more than absorb it. Due to the shape of the helmet, those bricks would've had to hit pretty square to kill, whereas no helmet=dead either way.
I'm not judging. Just gettin started. It does seem a little odd that they were that close when the building was so involved.
Should they have been there?
As an instructor I had said once, "the best answer to any question in the fire service is "it depends"
ok for everyone saying they weren't wearing helmets... look at the truck earlier in the vid... the guy on the truck and wlking past it... wat are they wearing??? oh ya HELMETS!! and if u look closely at the guys by the ladder... oh wats that again?? do i see helmets on them??? read the description!!! it knocked his helmet off his head like ladder10312 said...
How about wearing your helmets? I"m not going to knock you guys to bad, but come on common sense.. If a single brick hit one of those 2 guys.. Guess what a LODD over being stupid, and careless. I'm not saying a helmet would help if that chunk hit one of them, but still helmets at all times... None the less those 2 had no business being at the base of the house, not even the 3rd guy. I would hate to see your safety officers.
None the less learn from mistakes, and stay safe out there.
In the description it clearly states the fact that it struck his helmet then broke his hand. Who are you to be talking about these men having "no business" being at the base of the house? If the house is on fire, it kind of is their business...Being firefighters and all.
I meant 1 of those guys, not the one who got hit... Watch the video closer... I can question any operation i feel fit to.. Being an firefighter and all.. I hope if i do something stupid on the fire ground.. some one will clock me on it.
Like i stated "being careless" to the one not wearing his helmet, and those 2 possible 3 for being in an danger area unprepared. zoom in be for you question it again.
Guys, this is why we have collapse zones. fire through the roof, fully involved house... TOTAL LOSS. No need to be close to the building. I wasn't there so i definitely wont question why he was where he was. But just from this video, all signs point to a defensive approach to the fire (Master streams). Establish a collapse zone and get away from the building. Feedback on my comment please.
@teamgiffin you're absolutely right. Phoenix SOP's state how total loss of structure without salvable property should be attacked from a defensive position. Injury could have easily been avoided
@teamgiffin absolutely, the building is engulfed, standing ten feet from the building is pointless... and as evident in the video extremely dangerous. Going into a fire or putting ourselves in danger needlessly isn't brave it is very foolish. That being said, it is hard to know most of the facts, but the video however does SEEM to record a number of issues that could be discussed at a debrief:)
@FIRE4LIFE91 Agreed and well put. It is easy to quarterback a video on youtube or anywhere else. The reason behind it is to learn. If I made a mistake and got it on video I would post it. Putting pride aside so others can make the right decisions and learn from mine is priceless. I know that other departments that are busy also would agree with me.
the "alarm" system is used in many places. it's used to signify a certain level or response. A 3 alarm fire may get you anywhere between 8-15 engines, 5-10 ladders, and other specialty apparatus depending on where you are.
its used lots of places but every place has different levels of response for each additional "alarm" based on their district or area.
so basically, the higher the alarm, the worse the fire is.
Good to see all the PPE police that weren't there are on duty. Hey, sometimes you take your eye off the ball. This is just a reminder that you have to keep your head on a swivel. I am sure you don't need to tell the guy who broke his hand that he has to watch the collapse zone next time, I think he is well aware of it now. We should be learning from these videos, not bashing our brothers.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
So close to the house, and in the "hot zone", and not wearing helmet?
