I went to see one of Reb's clinics in California in the fall of 1991, right when I started out playing guitar. He was amazing...great player and great guy.
If he played power chords in the Who or Nirvana, and sacrificed his technique would he be more popular?But...It seems to me that ppl prefer a good song to a technical guitar player,but...if you can combine the two then your in business, just my opinion.
@ErlendoWH Reb's name is still spoken with great respect and awe around my parts. He may have been underrated but he was never under-appreciated. Long live the talent of these guitar Masters. I dare say that true talent may be poised for a come-back...I dare say...
That tapping piece is pure music, not shred, not wankage, it's actually melodic and beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I love shred and wankage as much as the next guy, but who we have here is hands down THE BEST tapper in guitar, someone who can put melodic sense to something so simple is a pure genius.
I look at videos like this and see someone like Reb dicking around, and it's good. Then I see videos from popular music today and see someone like Synister Gates, and I have to wonder how we got to the point we did in music. There's no reason why anything like this should have faded to the point it is at and the horrible stuff passed off as music today is selling. Even the screams of the 80s era metal were at least melodic and musical, not brash and unintelligble.
There is so much "music" out nowdays that is just flat out CRAP.
All the members of a band could be complete musical geniuses, but the music they make as a band is completey unappealing to the ear.
De-tuned guitars and some guy screaming with a drummer just kicking the shit out of his set on the bass pedals, altogether sounding like a bunch of noise.
Not to mention a ton of those guys are dicks in person.
What your referring to is not really music. It's more of a statement delivered with a thunder of noise, aka heavy detuned guitars, and aggressive drumming; not musical at all in my opinion. It would be different if it sounded good.
I don't blame it on the artists or bands. I blame the producers, the record labels, and the recording industry. They stopped looking for talent long ago, and are just signing anybody now these days hoping to make some money. Greed has ruined music!!
Bach? Mozart? Elvis Presley? Michael Jackson? People gravitate to what they like. Much of it is "Folk Music" which the "plain folk" enjoy. Greed has ruined some things but it is still the fans who decide what is best for themselves...and Reb Beach has tons of fans!
YOU CAN THANK THE SHITTY MUSIC OF TODAY TO ........ NIRVANA.......... AFTER ALL, IT WAS GRUNGE THAT TOOK THE TALENT OUT OF MUSIC AND THE "IAN" OUT OF "MUSIC" ... END OF STORY. I have 3 friends in 3 different bands that all had record contracts, recorded albums to have them shelved before release because of quote "we see music changing direction. we want to see this new direction" ............ NIRVANA destroyed musicianship.......... i know people will fight this.. BUT I LIVED AND WITNESSED IT
@canadianshadowrider: 150% agree...Nirvana destroyed musicianship....influenced a bunch of youngsters to appreciate GARBAGE..I'm so glad i had real influences on guitar.
@canadianshadowrider your comment about "grunge that took the talent out of music" "end of story",,,,,that my friend is SO true. It's very frustrating to see good players be pushed to the side to honour Lady Gaga. In America ,, is very trendy.Whatever sells,Employee of the month music is what i call it. Europe and Japan,, is very loyal to great heavey music and talent. I'm sorry bro,,we have to live with this bad mentality.
@RCstrats You're so right. The first time I was in Europe I was blown away to meet people who were my age that were familiar with, and even liked this type of music. Hair metal never became "uncool" there and it's fantastic.
@canadianshadowrider You sound JUST like the Songwriters and Session Musicians that said the same thing about bands like The Beatles that were writing & recording for themselves and "doing it all wrong" according to them. Like it or not, there were "talented" bands in the Grunge genre... the Public At Large were simply sick of the by-then overblown and far too many generic Hair Metal bands. I understand the feeling, I was the same at the time - but I realized that Good Music exists wherever.

Are you really gonna compare reb and curt. A guitar player and a song writer. Funny how kurt is dead and Nirvana lives on and reb is alive and who is that band he played for?? Oh yeah - fuckin gay ass Winger... - shut up
more specifically a shit songwriter to a great guitar player. and winger was an excellent band...far superior to any of your bullshit little grunge bands who barely knew how to even tune their goddamn guitars. (alice in chains was cool...that's it.)
Seconded. Reb Beach and Jerry Cantrell are two of my fav players. I consider Alice in Chains in a league of their own compared to the other "grunge" stuff.
whats important is that Reb takes pride in what he does, and his fans still love him for it.
Kurt was a loser drug addict who wrote shitty music. and the only people who care about him and nirvana are the same people who bought his crap back in the 90's. btw, Nirvana died back in the 90s with the rest of that shit called grunge.
thanks for posting this, i always wanted to see how he did the intro for "Baptized by Fire". I just saw him play with Winger last week and he is still amazing and a really nice guy.
Well Steve Vai, Reb Beach, who would not like to reach such guitar level? After maybe Steve is far beyond all 80's guitarists (except the jedi master, Shawn Lane!)
Mr. Beach is a real original. Beautiful tapping, and he's clearly got humility and a great personality. Thanks for posting this. One of my big favorite players.
what's funny about tuning down half a step? ever heard of Stevie Ray Vaughan? or guns n roses, extreme, slayer, megadeth, metallica - they all did that lil' trick. and, as far as 7 string UV's go, morbid angel are the men.
Holy shit!
