I agree. Brel´'s performance of his own music and lyrics of Dans le Port d'Amsterdam is indeed my all time favorites. But this this is not entirely unpleasant.
Now Now, Of course the original can not be recreated in english, but this is as close as it will get, this is imaginative without being to literall. I say best Brel Translation.
Rod McKuen is a welcome addition to You Tube. Sorry I didn't find him here earlier. Thanks so much for posting, surprised you're taking so much heat on those lyrics!
"Rod McKuen is a welcome addition to You Tube. Sorry I didn't find him here earlier. Thanks so much for posting, surprised you're taking so much heat on those lyrics!"
LOL! Yeah, I have a pile of McKien songs in MP3 format, different versions -- I think he changed words from other people's versions and from his own versions routinely just so that they didn't become stale. }:-}
With regard to the lyrics, McKuen translated many Brel songs and they were apparently close friends. I doubt any changes McKuen made were ones Brel would have disapproved of. Also, Brel's own versions of this aren't consistent. I suspect that he wrote many verses and versions, and then selected different ones at different times to fit his mood, provide variety, etc.
"btw those lyrics you posted at the describtion OWN! did you make them up yourself"
Rod McKuen didn't create the song himself, but when he sings it he uses slightly different words than anybody else. The words I retrieved was from David Bowie's version which is different than Rod's or Jacques'. Saruman38 mentioned this about 2 weeks ago in the previous comment. }:-}
dont really like bowie's version.. the lyrics are great but the sound is.. off for some reason, ah well.. btw did you ever hear that other live version of amsterdam by mckuen? its better in my opinion! :O if you havent i can mail it!
I found the CD at the local library and made a copy though it's some how missing one of them. "Little boys go ride with their horse in the park, never mind the grownups and stay out till dark, so long, stay well, love was here now it's gone." That song is missing for some reason.
Splendid! I remember Rod McKuen his poetry and songs were very popular when I was in high school. I was given a gift of his poetry, oh my, so long ago! This video is wonderful!
I have always loved this song, as performed by Rod McKuen. And now, I may add with some pride, I am actually working in ... the Port of Amstedam!

This song was written by the great Belgian Singer/Songwriter JACQUES BREL. The original is in French. This is McKuen's English translation.

Still lacking the spirit that Brell instilled in this song, but a really good try. Unlike some others.

This version is the original version ? Anyway sounds great, better than David Bowie. Rod McKuen singing it is more realistic :D
Silverhazed 3 years ago
This is far from the original, the original was by a belgium artist named Jacques Brel.

Didn´t I write the right lyrics and send them to you?
If so, why not use them? If I didn't,, want me to? It's no effort at all.

Great version, but ehm...I wanted to sing along with a cool beer at hand , but the lyrics you printed are completely different!
There goes my one-man-karaoke-(kinda)-drunk-beerfest-show...anyway cheers.

"the lyrics you printed are completely different"
Yeah, darn it but McKuen used different words for a lot of it. Soe day I need to fix the lyrics that I posted so that they match. LOL!
But of course even if the words don't match, a beer still works! }:-}

Nice, but in the description you've put the lyrics of David Bowie's version, which are not the same as Rod McKuen's version.
Oh, and by the way, it would have been nice to specify that this is a cover of a famous song by Jacques Brel.

Nice version though I prefer the original version of Jacques Brel. Shouldn't it be Rod instead of Mod?
