As far as instrumental stuff goes, DJ Zeph is good... check his Ay Mami track in the related videos as well. My other faves are RJD2 and DJ Shadow. RJD2's "Dead Ringer" should be a good start... and maybe one day you'll get into lyrical hip-hop too ;)

Rather, I like the musical structure of hip-hop, it's the rappers that have left a bitter taste in my mouth. While I may be incorrect in my prejudices, when I hear vocal rap, the topic is usually about A. Sex B. Money or C. Fame with some nitwit dropping the F-bomb 7 times a stanza. I may have just had incredibly poor luck, but whenever I was exposed to hip-hop, that's what I saw. Frankly I hope I'm wrong, because I've been listening to these recommendations and have so far liked them greatly.

Well if you talk to any real hip-hop head, you will hear them tell you that real hip-hop is not on the radio anymore, and the subjects are either the ABCs you mentioned. It's not that you are unlucky, but that's the type of music that is pushed nowadays, but there is plenty of creativeness in the rhymes of underground rappers if you can find them.
