My favourite song of all time. To take on a subject like the relationship between a mother who is a prostitute and her child is so brave. It's such a taboo subject that many would steer well clear. Is says a lot about Chrissie Hynde as songwriter and as human being that she had the balls to take it on and produced such a wonderful song. No mention of syringes or sordid sex. Chrissie brings to our attention what many of us don't appreciate. The love and resillience of a mum and her child.
lift me up when i'm down, sooth my soul when i'm in despair. the pretenders are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time . chrissie hinds voice is mesmerising powerful and enchanting. This song helped me through a lot of dark days when trying to get access to my beautiful daughter. alaways reminds me of her
i love this woman. i have never known exactly what this song is or was about but that was the best part, i made it my own.. i know one thing, a lot of memories were made with this song. she is absolutely, positively an amazing artist.. nothing you will see today..
guitarist is probably adam seymour, he was with the pretenders from 93 for about 13 years. he used to be with the katydids (i never heard of them but). he was with the band til 2006. he wrote a couple songs too for the pretenders, the only one other than the founding members who was allowed to.
@sabaqat mostly true. He was kicked out in 2007, he co-wrote two albums, not a couple of songs and he wasn't the only person to co-write with her besides the original band. Johnny Marr Co-Wrote a song on their album "Packed!" named 'When Will I See You?'
Wow however is playing guitar for this performance sounds JUST like "The Honeyman" riff for riff. Is it him? I'm watching on my phone so I can't see the guitarist clearly. Remarkable performance, and good sound too.
This song wasn't written for either Pete Farndon or James Honeyman Scott. "Kid" was on their debut album. Farndon and Scott didn't die until after their second album.
Kid was James Honeyman-Scott, guitarist who ODed on coke. Pete Farndon, bassist was battling heroin abuse and left the band unable to cope with it - when he was found dead by his wife after passing out and drowning in his bathtub after a heroin overdose. Two days after Farndon's dismissal, James Honeyman-Scott was found dead of heart failure caused by a cocaine overdose.
Back on the Chain Gang was written for James Honeyman-Scott who OD just before Farndon did. As far as I know, Kid is a song about a prostitute who's kid has just found out what she does for a living.
@berettadreams hows about if they just call it chrissie like madona or something [shes very loyal ] that drummer is the hardest working drummer in the business
@spacepatrolman I don't think she'd like that. The Pretenders have always been a Cohesive act. Allthose who think its all about Chrissie are missing the best parts of the band. She is amazing but, Martin Chambers is a beast and probably the best rock drummer on the planet (as Chrissie says) This particular line-up had Adam Seymour he was an insurmountable addition to the band, he added a new sound and could play with expertise.
@berettadreams suppose they call it chrissie hynde backed her behind into a meat slicer in her vegetarian restaurant and got a little behind in her work suppose they call her next album talk dirty to me with a song I wrote called cloe edwards is a dirty little fuck hole

as far as i know the only two original members left are the drummer and chrissie hind.
i saw them play live back in the seventies.
they payed at a small club called the Grey Topper in Nottinghamshire.
the band thought they were jinxed as two members of the band died of accidents sundenly.
The grey topper was the best place to go for live music, acts who have appeared there include, the beatles, marmalade, blackfoot sue, ect
happy days.

@spacecraftrepairman
Peter Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott actually died of drug overdoses, I suppose it was "accidental"

She dedicates it to them at every show since this song features what might be JHS's most recognizable solo. Fantastic song.

Back on the Chain Gang was written about Ray Davies. The song was written while Jimmy ans Pete were alive. Hynde has said it many times.
And Jimmy ODed nearly a year before Farndon.
You are right about Kid
