@JangosSoulja. Great Britain, like many other countries, got rich by the slave trade. But it was Great Britain that made it illegal in 1772, 4 years before the American Revolution. It was Granville Sharp's land mark action which obliged Lord Chief Justice Mansfield to declare in court that "the state of slavery is...so odious, that nothing can be suffered to support it...". Since then Britain has been at the very forefront in the battle for human rights - let us not forget that.

You are certainly right - it is not a period of British history one would wish to remember but, after the Chinese had begun to behead British subjects to stop the opium trade, Britain naturally had to act and, as the times dictated, with gun boats. Britain's aggression, to perpetuate the sale of opium, maybe contrasted with the actions of British missionaries who, at the same time, fought to stop the cruel practice of binding the feet of young girls.
