That has to be a blue cat, not due to the color, but because it has a square tail and a square anal fin. Channel cats have a rounded anal fin and a deeply forked tail.

caught a blue that size yesterday...that looked like a blue to me too but i'll take your word for it, maybe NJ channels are short and fat like bullheads are here in NC

I use sonar to see where the fish are and then bring the lure up or down to them.
