  • John Medeski is the Chuck Norris of music

  • @knathanstein

you mean Chuck Norris is the John Medeski of karate actors

  • @luthierjustin1 well said

  • grupo diapasao facebook

  • I love the clave rhythm in the keys. So groovy.

  • medeski has a whole building made of keyboards and hammonds. So bad he can't take some of them. They're on the bottom.

  • perhaps Glenn Miller was "true Jazz"

  • This is "true jazz'. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant to what jazz is. The days of "There Will Never Be Another You" are 50 years ago. This is jazz, this is NOW!

  • This suddenly reminded me strongly of a Ray Charles tune, and I can't place which one. HALP

  • a great moment @ around 3:58 when chris wood is just listening intently and deciding what note to hit next. You can see his hand hover over his strings.

  • Thank God MMW formed as they are one of the only true jazz groups around, using the medium to create a sound and music of their own. Best group of my generation!

  • @wesgibbens never in a million years will mm&w be a true jazz group. not saying they're bad, i love these guys. just not "true jazz".

  • @superchuds What's "true" jazz, then?

  • @superjay42

probably somthing like miles or parker; even bill evans at times.

these guys are seriously one of my favorite groups though. i didn't mean to sound like a pretentious asshole.

  • @superchuds you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about retard, cuz you dont. lmao cool you know three jazz names, fuck off you child

  • @wolvesnrp Are you 13?

  • @superchuds "even bill evans at time" lmfao oh my god

  • @superchuds Don't sweat it. Maybe "traditional jazz" would be a better phrase. :) I think MMW is exactly the kind of band it wants to be, and I like that there's no easy label to place on their music. I find that's a common thread among many of my favorite musicians - that they more or less create a new language of their own, one that exists outside of conventional genres.

  • @superjay42 they've called it themselves "homeless music"

  • @thedizzit Haha, yep. The one term i've heard that seems remotely fitting is "avant groove." That kind of captures some of the inherent contrasts and seeming contradictions in their sound, IMO

  • I can't believe this cat's left hand tech.

  • groovy

  • damn that bass solo was so cool at the end! wish it wasnt cut off :(

  • medeski is proof that you dont have to be an attractive swag looking young cat to be the fucking best! medeski, you are an inspiration to all of us ugly musicians!

  • @seerskater Who're you callin ugly, son?

  • @superjay42 medeski. no offense to medeski haha, woops i CAN see how it could sound like that. i guess im just saying medeski is beautiful in his own way.

  • @seerskater The Desk has sex appeal oozing from every pore. recognize.

  • Chris's face from 1:48 to 1:43... love you man.

  • Where can I find this performance in it's entirety?

  • if you don't groove on this....your dead...

  • Billy Martin plays a cookie tin lid, and it gives me a boner. Unbelievable.

  • always wondered, thought maybe an aluminum ashtray..

  • It's a livin.

  • epitome of Trio

  • Medeski is a ridiculous...amazing. Billy Martin is a complete badass, and his snare sounds AMAZING. And Chris Wood just fucking kills on bass. What a trio. The modern Cream.

  • I watch this video at least once a week, my doctor said if I don't it could induce seizures and explosive diarrhea.

  • i'm going to their concert tonight!!

  • 7 people were born without a groove muscle

  • toooo dirty nasty bass

  • What's the thing Billy is hitting with his drumstick starting at about 35 seconds in? It looks like a little metal sailor's hat. anyone know what it's called?

  • @djlbp I think it's an ashtray. For real.

  • melocotonazo

  • i wanna see these guys jam with herbie hancock

  • Thanks man

  • Who knew Conan could jam on bass so well?

  • listening to them since they start playing and i think they gonna be very popular!!!

  • @simonbear666 Thats the stupidest comment I have ever read on youtube

  • @2245DRUMMER amen to that!

  • @simonbear666 Dude, if you're serious... just stay away from Medeski. You'll never get it.

  • @simonbear666 So...... DID YOU KILL YOURSELF YET?

  • Comment removed

  • very nice ! です.

  • clave?

  • minute 1:52, man....minute 1:52

  • You are correct sir. At 1:52 they start to kick some serious, serious ass.

  • Saw them about 7 weeks ago in Portland, ME..The Jam Band fans were a little annoying screaming in my ears but hey its my own damn fault as an aging yuppie actual musician that I didn't shell out for reserved seating and be a true middle aged snob lmao!

  • i love billy's gentle touch on the drums.

  • wood straight kills that opening bass solo

  • These guys really feel the music, just look at them when are playing!, amazing stuff live, love it.

    Genialísimo, bravo.

  • I went to the Grand Rapids show. It was absolutely amazing. I like Phish, but these guys were ridiculous. I think Billy Martin is one of- if not THE- best drummer I've ever seen live. Such a light touch, amazing grooves, endlesss ideas.

  • I would go with MMW! For me a no brainer, lol.

  • like thats a choice

  • man, they are coming to grand rapids, mi in nov... but its the same day as phish in detroit.

sometimes the choices life throws at you just aren't fair.

  • i'm facing the same thing. I'm going to MMW, just becuase i'm in Holland.

  • Cant wait for Friday they are gonna Kill ACL!!!

  • indeed, they did kill at ACL.

  • WinningDay93 = BEST COMMENT EVER!! lol

  • Awesome! My favorite part was 0:00 - 7:53

  • this trio is amazing

  • Great!

  • what would you call the keyboard medeski uses at 3:20

  • Hi, The Keyboard used is a Hammond B3.

  • electric guitar? Just guessing

  • rhodes ... electric piano.. he sometimes has a wurlitzer 200 series instead

  • the keyboard at the beginning is a clavinet... D4, I think

  • it's a wurlitzer electric. run through some tasty-a** distortion

  • *rhythm...sorry i've never been able to spell this word correctly:)

  • hey jaydude,

it could be anything with that guy...

i saw/heard him use a straw in a 7-11 big gulp cup lid as percussion at show years ago...he ran it back and forth through the lid to make an interesting little rthym.

    inspiration surrounds........

  • 4:56 yeaah

  • does anyone know what that little silver thing billy martin is playing in the beginning is?

  • funny! maybe's a aluminium ashtray ?

    love this guys

  • Lol, I ca see the album now...

Billy Martin: Drums, Percussion & Ashtray

    ...Jimboni

  • its a hubcap

  • Jagasim!

  • Jazgasm

  • 4:17-4:30 = Jazz Orgasm

  • Yes! Well mentioned. Creamy indeed!

  • ohh man! im seeing them in like 4 days,

    cant wait!

  • how was it i saw them a wile ago and it was awesome

  • sorry i meant bass

  • my guess is 20 only because I know he regularily plays 20's. But I have seen some video of him playing what looked like an 18'' bass drum. If the reason you are asking is because you are looking to get a drum kick of that size, I'd say go with a 20''.. A 20x14, something like that. I recently refirbished a 60's or 70's Stewart Drumkick with a 20x14'' bass drum and it sound awesome. Everything sound realy good. Billy Martin was my influence on getting the kit and it's been great.

  • is that an 18 inch or a 20 nass drum?

  • NOBODY can play a metal lid like Illy B!

  • they are the coolest fucking band on earth!

it's also amazing how medeski almost sounds like a guitar when he's playing clavi . . .

  • i know, when i first heard the band i thought they had a guitar player

  • dirty wurly solo.. CMON

  • 6:34 - GREAT fucking angle. I'm loving Billy's face. SO can't wait to see them @ Mountain Jam this year.

  • Never really liked this song when listening to the album, but after watching this version: really digging it. Lovely.

  • all i can say is 10k here i come. why you so funky medeski?

  • Deeeeeyuhhhm

  • I love this song, but I think medeski needs to be turned down a bit. could be my speakers though.

  • i like how medeski doesnt sit to play the keys

  • MMW fun fact: They used to be known as Coltrane's Wig.

  • O_O

  • beauuuuuutiful!

  • u dont know a shir u just got hubris mother fucker, you think u are so special, u proably cant play 4 a shit

  • These motherfuckers are so bad it's disgusting.

  • Could you qualify your comment? It's a vacuous remark without providing reason.

  • I'm positive that's a favorable comment. Bad = great, disgusting = hard to take in without exploding in awe

  • You know, after I posted this thing yesterday, I thought that there would probably be one or two knuckleheads out there who would interpret it as an insult. Thanks, blvdben, for clarifying.

Hey tootallferyou, I thought of a better screen name for you: l READ l

  • Fuck, that didn't turn out right. Hold on, lemme try again:

    l read l

  • Sure. There was no doubt in my mind, friend!

  • Sometimes I don't know what most impresses me about these guys. I mean, Medeski is such a storm on the keys that I sometimes overlook Martin and Wood. In this video, though, you get to see how Martin's relentless bass playing is the real back bone of MMW. The best showcase of Wood's originality is the "new planet" vid, I think. But the real magic comes from the way they play together, more than from any one individual's talent.

  • What's so funny about that is that I tend to overlook John! He is definitely the driving force of the sound that you hear since he is the melodic lead, but I just can't stop watching Chris. So I totally agree with you saying Wood is the back bone. He's my fav bass player easy. I'm going to check out the planet vid now. Thanks!

  • all time i see this video..

    Verry nice,.....

    JAH BLESS MAN

  • One of the best bands.

  • Martin is a good player.

  • oh yes...Hammond and clavineto...

  • Saw these boys last night in Gijón, Spain. Gobsmacked.

  • No.

  • Saw them close the Playboy Jazz Festival many years ago. Very possibly the best thing ever.

  • What a great video. They are really tight here. I just saw MMSW too.....I am so glad that I got the opportunity. Great show.

  • mmw are one of the best bands i've ever seen

  • The genius is not the chord it's the context of the chord.

  • no, its the cord contextually in reference to the cord in context, DOH!!!

  • The Chord at 4:01 is genius...

  • its just a c over an ab

  • no shit, shirlock?

  • So warm.

  • duuu ka ralllleoo!!

  • amazing band, i saw em live with john scofield. phenomenal show
