I recall seeing on TV, 30 years ago, that someone in Great Britain DID build one out of timbers & bowling balls. "I say, time for tea." (rumble rumble rumble...)
Hi, I hope you don't mind me posting this query here... I am desperately looking for a replacement motor for my ball clock. It is an original 240v synchronous motor, which failed tonight for no apparent reason. I have a feeling they were/are available from somewhere in Germany, but I have no contact info.
OMG! I have one of these somewhere. I remember having to put it together and using a white wax crayon to rub so the numbers show up. Although, I only have the basic silver ball bearings to tell the time..... I really hated 1am when all the balls reset.
I used to have an exact one of these which lasted for about 10 years, then the motor broke. I later moved house and when I unpacked it several parts had snapped even though I packed it really well. :-(
I have exactly the same model. Standing on my cuboard, collecting dust since about the least 15 years... As i saw your video i thought, its time to reactivate it!!
I have that one too, and it's still for sale in Holland. There are only a few things different, while in this old clock (which my parents had) the arm goes round in 1:00 minute and doesn't stop, the new clock only moves once a minute and much faster.
I have a roller ball clock for around 35 years. It is fascinating, and a little noisy, but now it has gone silent due to a burnt out drive motor that turned the arm once a minute to pick up a ball. Now I need a replacement. Any one who has one, or an alternative, PLEASE
Contact Stuart at Stuart's Rolling Ball Clock website. He can repair motors, usually, as long as the owner hasn't attempted repairs on them or tried to open them or detatch the cord. I have one of these, too, and they're loads of fun - this, a Golden Hour and a Bradt Six-Man Clock.
I wish some company would take this to the next level: make the case near if not totally soundproof so people can put it their bedrooms, include AM/PM, then day of the week and day of the month. Most importantly, make it AC powered and accurate with Quartz.
These are still made, but they have a battery movement instead of the synchronous AC motor. Instead of rotating constantly at 60 RPM, a quartz movement gives a signal to the arm motor and it makes one revolution in about 10 seconds. Eventually, the arm's cam switch wears out and the arm spins constantly until the batteries die. The older clocks were much better.
I also own such a clock. You did a really great job at filming it. I wouldn't have been as good, so I'm happy YOU filmed it for the masses :-) Its oh so nice!
I saw one of those when I was like 5 years old, now I'm 28, and I had always dreamed having one. Never saw one again. Do you know where can I get one of those clocks? I really love to own one.
I couldnt find as well. May be they dont trade it anymore. There a page on en wikipedia about rolling ball clock. Maybe starting from links below there you can reach a reseller... maybe.
i could sit and watch those things all day

My father had one of these when I was a kid. Mom hated the noise it made going from 12:59 to 1, especially 1am.

I want to build a big one, using bowling balls! In my back yard. Do you think the neighbors would mind? 8-)

That would be fantastic.
