Im only 13 & i really want to be s dermatologist :) i cant wait! i want to have that satisfaction of knowing that i have helped someone and potentially made their life better. I plan on watching all of your videos this week.
@sophi3love: An esthetician has nothing close to dermatology. By definition an esthetician is simply trained to learn modern and superficial cosmetological tectonics in order to "groom" their clients: eyebrow shaping&tweezing, body waxing, manicure/pedicure, skin exfoliating, cosmetic peels. A dermatologist explores the issues from within from medical knowledge and visual analysis.
Some people in the line of comments ask why dermatologists need to go to med school first. That's a very silly question since being a doctor doesn't mean to be fully specialized in their field. They must have the basis of medical knowledge in order to apply certain medication without provoking disorder to the patient health and also to be able to continue research and develop new methods.
This is one of the best videos ive seen .I am in my freshman year of college, majoring in Bio but I want to pursue dermatology. You have been so helpful, Thank You:]
Doctor, you forgot to mention the MCAT- its like the one most important factors of getting admitted into Medical School, did u take the MCAT? It is a very difficult exam.
do you know any grants that could help me afford to go to school to be a dermatologist? My mom told me its expensive so i just choose the next best thing Esthetics.
I love seeing people who genuinely love and enjoy their careers. I believe you come across as such in all of your videos. It i is especially apparent for pursing to educate others through a new media such as youtube which is proof that you honestly have a love for dermatology.
I dont know if I'm the only doc watching this but I'm a recently graduated med student. Dermatology is very competitive. So competitive in fact that even med students from Ivy league schools have trouble getting in. Most students get PhDs or add research experience to their resume. It's also good if you know someone in the field who can get you in.
time passes anyway. It would be only 6 or 7 years for me.
But think of it this way, in 15 years from now, you will still be 15 years older. The time will still pass. The only question is what do you want to do with that time. Do you want to work on something you will be proud of? Something that will make you stand out?
Choosing education is the best choice you can make for yourself in this world. Start now so you do not have any regrets,
@NaomiChambers "think of it this way, in 15 years from now, you will still be 15 years older. The time will still pass. The only question is what do you want to do with that time."
^ This is extremely good advice. And yes, it can be difficult to go at your own pace. Doing so can make you feel like you somehow aren't 'matching up' w/the typical timeline followed by your peers, but stay focused; try not to feel 'left out' (or like you aren't where you're 'supposed' to be). Your life is yours.
thanx doctor.. i have one question.. i m from India, there people with dry skin apply a homemade solution of glycerine + rosewater + few drops of lemon juice ...
this makes skin supper soft.. although it is very sticky .. i apply it in night ... how does this works?? glycerine is a component in most of the skin care products .. why does glycerine makes skin soft?
Dermatology here in Canada is a very competative career choice. My best friend's sister just finished a year of residency (after medical school) and has spent 9 years in school (post-secondary) already. It's another 4 years of school for her as she also wants to specialize in cosmetic dermatology.
thanks for this, i really want to be a dermatologist. I'm 16 and have a huge intrest in keeping my skin looking nice and healthy. this sounds like a lot of work though... I'll have to think it over =)
i'm a senior in high school and i have been researching schools to go to for pre med programs. what are some colleges or universities that you suggest for a good pre med program in the midwest?
Omg this was helpful ! I'm in the 11th grade & I've started thinking about what college I want to go to. But I definitely want to be a dermatologist. I so agree-- it does sound like a lot of work but it will be so worth it ! I'm obsessed with having good skin, so it's no surprise I want to be a derm ! Thanks Dr. Schultz (:
@Paradigm715 lol so true. In being a dermatologist you actually work with a lot of HIV/AIDs patients and others with infectious diseases. It's not all beauty and prettiness. It's a broad field and you'll see all kinds of patients!
@LottaCherries Yeah, therefore, US dermatologists make hella lot of money. To get in, they have to go through a tough competition as well as for those who want to be anaesthetist.
I want to be a dermatologist!! It´s a beautiful specialty :-)

Dermatology is not about having "good skin",it's about treating illnesses of the skin, and many people will never achieve "good/flawless skin"....
