I remember when I came across this on PBS one night. I about pissed myself. I love Nick Cave, and where I live, nobody listens to him. Made me soooo happy!
Nick sings an abbreviated version of the Mannheim/Willett translation of the song See the shark with teeth like razors And he wears them in his face And Macheath has got a knife But not in such an obvious place Now see the shark, how red his fins are As he slashes at his prey Mack the Knife wears fancy gloves Which gives a minimum away By the Thames' turbid waters Men abruptly tumble down Well is it plague, or is it cholera Or because Macheath's in town?
and here's the rest: And the child bride, in her nighty Whose assailant's still at large Violated in her slumbers Macky how much did you charge? And that ghastly fire in Soho Seven children at a go In the crowd stands Mack the Knife But he isn't asked and he don't know In the crowd stands Mack The Knife But he ain't asked and he don't know
as the ground cave'd from under his shoes, the demands met
were futile. Caving into his internal instinct he proceeded to give the doorman the ticket required for the entrance of the Three Penny Opera and there on stage was the preformer in all his dynamic, brooding, sardonic wit . Nick Cave was belting out his rendition of Mack the Knife as Bobby Darin watched in puzzled approvall.
I thought Nick was well-suited to this song. I love this film/album as it shows how great Kurt Weill's songs are that they can be interpreted in different styles.
Maybe that's just the reason he didn't. I think it would be more interesting for Tom to do his version of shake ya ass or something :P. Now that would be a challenge to make it his own!
He did, in a live show. There is an extremely rare bootleg around somewhere. Waits probably has a recording of it, but the internet definitely doesn't. There is a foreign website called Markpalatz, you can find some of his rare stuff on it sometimes.
They are both correct. vicepresident a little bit more, because jirix asked the meaning in particular sentence, which doesn't have anything to do with nick cave :P
The phrase isn't really "cave on" but 'on' does often follow the word 'cave' in that context. The best answer, to cave is to "relinquish". It is a willing release, that is performed under pressure. The allusion "caving" or to "cave" is from the word applying also to literal holes or openings, or digging holes into something. You might see or hear it in other ways like;
I like the drunkenness of this version. It's just a matter of taste, really, but the one by Lotte Lenya (watch?v=aPG9GcykPIY) is my favorite closely followed by this one.
Kurt Weill, a well known stage composer from back in the 20s composed a song called September Song (which has since been done by many greats such as Frank Sinatra Andy Williams Willie Nelson and Echo & The Bunnymen) He also composed a song called Mack The Knife which was used in one of his stage show The Threepenny Opera.
A tvspecial aired in 1995 was called 'September Songs-The Music of Kurt Weill.
Musicians performing songs by Weill. This had Cave doing Mack the Knife and other artists.
I didn't see who you were referring to, but I wholeheartedly agree. I'm sorry to the youngsters out there, but Cave + Brecht/Weil = perfection. How can anybody who loves Nick Cave not appreciate German Expressionist Opera? I mean, shit, Tom Waits has been mining this motherlode for nearly thirty years!
Haha. Unlike most people on thinternet, I actually know how to use grammar and punctuation. However, like most on here I choose not to.
Dude/ dudette, this isn't a personal attack. Just the tpe of people who use those words aren't the kind of people who like Nick Cave is all. =] gohaveanicelife
I taped this off PBS when it first aired, and I'm so glad I did, because I have not seen it ANYWHERE since then. It might possibly be on VHS somewhere, but I don't think it's ever been on DVD. Whoever releases this on a remastered DVD will clean up, seriously.
It's a tribute to the life and music of Kurt Weill with Lou Reed, Teresa Stratas, Elvis Costello, Betty Carter, PJ Harvey, William S. Burroughs, Charlie Haden & others performing the composer'songs, including "Mack the Knife," "September Song"& "Alabama Song." Set in a turn-of-the-century warehouse, the lavish designs echo many themes of Weill's work. From the austerity of a 1930's factory floor to the glittering spectacle of Broadway, each performance reflects Weill's creative spirit.
I thought that was fantastic myself. Certainly not wholly serious, so i can see why people wouldn't like it, but I thought it was jolly funny in Nick's dark and weird way =D
Yeah this is not one of the better Nick Cave covers... wtf is with that tuba?!?! Not quite convinced that this even makes it into the "so bad it's good" category.
Wow...Nick Cave, King of the Murder Ballad, doing the hate-song of dischordia and atonality from Three Penny Opera. Brilliant.
I just wish he'd gone a little more strangely atonal, but I still don't think people get Brecht outside of a very small percentage of the population, and those are either sadists and/or theatre buffs.
The pop standard that this song became turned it into a parody of itself. In Three Penny Opera, the song is dark and sinister - being about a serial killer and all - and Nick Cave captures that essence perfectly.
He should do a radio show with Nick Cage called "The Cave and The Cage"... I'm joking of course.
