  • He should do a radio show with Nick Cage called "The Cave and The Cage"... I'm joking of course.

  • This is what it feels like when I fall back from the pub. Singing out loud in a shithole in Dublin.

Except I can't sing and probably covered in vomit.

  • This is rough, strange on the ears and not particularly tuneful.

    Just how it should be.

  • This is quite terrifying.

  • Weill and Nick.

2 of my favourite things in one vid!

  • Great version

  • I love nick's little adjustments to the lyrics, "he wears them in his face" and so on. He really nails this :D this is gold.

  • This seems to me the only version of this song that is true to the original intent of Brecht and Weill.

  • just watching this made me think of a penile farm, witch make no sence. =/

  • DL the audio from this clip at tubepull doht cohm.

  • hey nick - gfy

  • Thanks for putting this up. Love this and hadn't seen it since oeta!

  • I remember when I came across this on PBS one night. I about pissed myself. I love Nick Cave, and where I live, nobody listens to him. Made me soooo happy!

  • Hluší ti co dají palec dolů :O)

  • AWESOME.

    AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.

  • what a wonderful lunatic

  • God damn i love nick cave

  • musically, it's like a tom waits version. nick and tom really should start a Gutter Twins kinda thing.

  • @psychicguitar Best idea. Ever.

  • @psychicguitar they can't. if nick and tom would do such a thing the world would explode just by the sheer awesomeness of it.

  • who says he can't act, lol

  • Nobody else could have done this better than him.

  • The magic combination of Nick Cave, Bertoldt Brecht and Kurt Weill!

  • this version is so much better than stings version

  • redios! cave reconvertiido raphael

  • this is the one my teacher showed us i prefer it sang like this

  • btw this is by me not h31180und

  • Can anyone link me to these lyrics, rather than the German or the Bobby Darrin/Scachamo versions?

  • Nick sings an abbreviated version of the Mannheim/Willett translation of the song See the shark with teeth like razors And he wears them in his face And Macheath has got a knife But not in such an obvious place Now see the shark, how red his fins are As he slashes at his prey Mack the Knife wears fancy gloves Which gives a minimum away By the Thames' turbid waters Men abruptly tumble down Well is it plague, or is it cholera Or because Macheath's in town?
  • and here's the rest: And the child bride, in her nighty Whose assailant's still at large Violated in her slumbers Macky how much did you charge? And that ghastly fire in Soho Seven children at a go In the crowd stands Mack the Knife But he isn't asked and he don't know In the crowd stands Mack The Knife But he ain't asked and he don't know
  • i think he fits the song perfectly. let's face it the lyrics are very moody(as are many of kurt's pieces) and nick cave is a moody artist.

  • this is a far superior translation from the one most singers usually sing. much darker... muahahaha

  • where and where the hell did this come from????

  • I absolutely lvoe all of Cave's work, and this is no exception. I must say, it is a bit hard to understand.

But, Cave is rather young here, when did this come out?

  • as the ground cave'd from under his shoes, the demands met

were futile. Caving into his internal instinct he proceeded to give the doorman the ticket required for the entrance of the Three Penny Opera and there on stage was the preformer in all his dynamic, brooding, sardonic wit . Nick Cave was belting out his rendition of Mack the Knife as Bobby Darin watched in puzzled approvall.

  • I thought Nick was well-suited to this song. I love this film/album as it shows how great Kurt Weill's songs are that they can be interpreted in different styles.

  • That sounds awesome. I will have to see it now!

  • This plays like a Tom Waits impersonation.

  • I'm surprised Tom never did a Mac the Knife version. I mean, this sort of song is right up his alley.

  • Maybe that's just the reason he didn't. I think it would be more interesting for Tom to do his version of shake ya ass or something :P. Now that would be a challenge to make it his own!

  • Well, he did What Keeps Mankind Alive, which is also Brecht...

  • Comment removed

  • He did, in a live show. There is an extremely rare bootleg around somewhere. Waits probably has a recording of it, but the internet definitely doesn't. There is a foreign website called Markpalatz, you can find some of his rare stuff on it sometimes.

  • very rogueish (y)

  • Very diffrent from Bobby Darrins version!

  • Thats what I was going to say!

  • this is the closest too the original Three penny opera version

  • Nick's the shit! I love this man!!!

And of course the song is a masterpiece!

  • great performance!

  • pure gold

  • I Love Nick Cave!!!!!

  • now that is a nice version thats when a remake becomes a new version of a classic.

  • i like his hair

  • yeah really great!!

he also could be a great actor or movie star.

cave and the bad seeds are unique

  • great........

  • Please, can someone explain to me what phrase cave on means? For example: they refused to cave on domestic spying. many thanx

  • It means to buckle under the pressure of something.

  • it's like rave on but with bad seeds music

  • I would live to see LaCave doing The Bigfishlittlefishcardboardbox in his own special way!

  • russelthereviewer is correct

  • They are both correct. vicepresident a little bit more, because jirix asked the meaning in particular sentence, which doesn't have anything to do with nick cave :P

  • The phrase isn't really "cave on" but 'on' does often follow the word 'cave' in that context. The best answer, to cave is to "relinquish". It is a willing release, that is performed under pressure. The allusion "caving" or to "cave" is from the word applying also to literal holes or openings, or digging holes into something. You might see or hear it in other ways like;

"She caved in to the demands"

"I will not cave on this issue."

    but it's N/A here.

  • Have you ever thought of having an enema?

  • Why are you a douche bag?

  • I like the drunkenness of this version. It's just a matter of taste, really, but the one by Lotte Lenya (watch?v=aPG9GcykPIY) is my favorite closely followed by this one.

  • He's quite good at this, actually.

  • this is a documentary from the early 90s made by Canada's Rhombus media. It was filmed in Toronto one winter.

    Isn't Nick divine?!

  • the way he flicks his fag is total big aching daddy!

  • Love the way he flicks that fag. I wish he'd flick me! hehehe rawr

  • Kurt Weill, a well known stage composer from back in the 20s composed a song called September Song (which has since been done by many greats such as Frank Sinatra Andy Williams Willie Nelson and Echo & The Bunnymen) He also composed a song called Mack The Knife which was used in one of his stage show The Threepenny Opera.

A tvspecial aired in 1995 was called 'September Songs-The Music of Kurt Weill.

Musicians performing songs by Weill. This had Cave doing Mack the Knife and other artists.

  • Can anybody tell me more about this movie?

  • nick cave! <3

does anyone know what instruments are used?

    this sounds so cooool!

  • I can only recognize a Tuba, drums and bass...and I think a trumpet is in there, i'm not quite sure.

  • is this a movie?? if so i must rent it immediately.

  • Stankerpooch,

I didn't see who you were referring to, but I wholeheartedly agree. I'm sorry to the youngsters out there, but Cave + Brecht/Weil = perfection. How can anybody who loves Nick Cave not appreciate German Expressionist Opera? I mean, shit, Tom Waits has been mining this motherlode for nearly thirty years!

  • If you dont like nick cave what the fuck are you doing here then?

go get a cock chug full of kid rock and kindly piss off.

great video thanks for putting it up....

and fuck the lot of you kid rock fans

    get lost

  • I find it hard to believe straight-faced, 'proper' musicians have sang a song like this...

Isn't it slightly Curse of Millhaven though?

  • Futher confirming Nick Cave is the sexiest man alive.

  • He reminds me Tim Burton´s Sweeney Todd:D

  • Pedro Navaja (Rubén Blades)

  • I think I just had a fangasm, too... Damn...

  • to-door2yourheart

    Artists are here to pose..

  • Polly harvey was a lucky woman. If I had him I'd be all over him constantly.

  • So you clicked on a video that says nick cave even though you hate him.

  • You use the words 'buffoon' and 'modify' in youtube sentences, unironically. I wouldn't expect you to like musical artistry. =]

  • No, you wouldn't, would you? Would you like me to correct your punctuation while I'm here?

  • Haha. Unlike most people on thinternet, I actually know how to use grammar and punctuation. However, like most on here I choose not to.

Dude/ dudette, this isn't a personal attack. Just the tpe of people who use those words aren't the kind of people who like Nick Cave is all. =] gohaveanicelife

  • What? I use both of those words. I always thought that the kind of people who don't like Cave were just, well, people who don't like Nick Cave....

  • You make a very valid point.

This is the point where I just shut up.

    =]

  • I love Kurt Weill. I love Nick Cave. I think I just had a fangasm. :o

Also, I really, REALLY can't get over how much Nick always looks like Hugo Weaving. Esp in the video for Where the Wild Roses Grow. :P

  • "fangasm" -that is brilliant.

    I know what you mean.

  • Hate to sound like 50% of YouTubers since the thing began, but - is this available to buy/ download/ mug people for?

  • I taped this off PBS when it first aired, and I'm so glad I did, because I have not seen it ANYWHERE since then. It might possibly be on VHS somewhere, but I don't think it's ever been on DVD. Whoever releases this on a remastered DVD will clean up, seriously.

  • It's like a version of Mack the Knife from that parallel universe where Bobby Darin had a goatee. Cool, in a strange way.

  • Isn't this out on DVD? If it is, I MUST have it!

  • i love this song!

  • he looks insane love it

  • what was the documentary of?

  • It's a tribute to the life and music of Kurt Weill with Lou Reed, Teresa Stratas, Elvis Costello, Betty Carter, PJ Harvey, William S. Burroughs, Charlie Haden & others performing the composer'songs, including "Mack the Knife," "September Song"& "Alabama Song." Set in a turn-of-the-century warehouse, the lavish designs echo many themes of Weill's work. From the austerity of a 1930's factory floor to the glittering spectacle of Broadway, each performance reflects Weill's creative spirit.

  • I thought that was fantastic myself. Certainly not wholly serious, so i can see why people wouldn't like it, but I thought it was jolly funny in Nick's dark and weird way =D

  • The whole song is pretty dark humour, so I don't see anything wrong with this version of it.

  • Yes, i think so too.

Cave is one of the persons who (in my opinion) are allowed to sing Mack the Knife!

  • and a thousand times better than the tired old jazzed up version a la Ella Fitzgerald and a hundered copiers...

  • brilliant! dark and funny.

  • Yeah this is not one of the better Nick Cave covers... wtf is with that tuba?!?! Not quite convinced that this even makes it into the "so bad it's good" category.

  • does anyone know what is the documentary called?

i know its a documentary because i saw it a long time ago

  • September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill

  • tank you

  • r u guys kidding this bites

  • omfg

  • pocos hombres tan talentosos como nick cave, es unico e irrepetible

  • This is why everyone Loves him.

  • This is why I love Nick.

  • He is fandastic!!!!

  • This song is so bad - and because of this I love it! :D

  • Christ... He was so trashed. But heah, I'm not one to disparage genius.

  • GEEEIIIILLLL!!!!

  • He's so insane in this video. Facial expressions of madness...

  • Oh...my...gosh...Nick Cave plus Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Could there be a more perfect match? I'm in gothic murder ballad heaven right now.

  • whats the films name? PLEASE TELL SOMEONE!!!

  • The Music of Kurt Weill: September Songs

  • look fore jack the knife+sithcamaro on youtube.

than you can see the pirate version.

  • i'm a theatre buff in awe of brecht, nick cave, kurt weill

  • Wow...Nick Cave, King of the Murder Ballad, doing the hate-song of dischordia and atonality from Three Penny Opera. Brilliant.

I just wish he'd gone a little more strangely atonal, but I still don't think people get Brecht outside of a very small percentage of the population, and those are either sadists and/or theatre buffs.

    Is this gestus? Lol.

  • oh but of course nick would do a phenomenal interpretation of this song... i just fall deeper and deeper in love with his talent

  • The pop standard that this song became turned it into a parody of itself. In Three Penny Opera, the song is dark and sinister - being about a serial killer and all - and Nick Cave captures that essence perfectly.

  • Brecht and Nick Cave . Makes sense. Actually should have known it. Maybe even did.

I just buyed a Cd with a french version (Florelle)of the song

  • whats the films name?

  • try as I might, I can not find this film on DVD. I was mesmerised by it when I saw it in Melbourne. Cave's old stomping ground

  • there is only 1 nick cave

  • nice to see the weil/ brecht song sang more like a ballad...the overworked - Ella Fitzgerald jazz version is as worn as a thousand year old carpet...

  • For some reason, this makes me laugh. I think it's the facial expressions / gestures that Nick makes in this video. Oh, Nick, I heart you so.

  • I think it's that the quality of the video makes him look worrying like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

  • HAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
