@MrZenik74 I disagree with you, I hate what Israel's doing over palestine. Im neither muslim nor arabic, nothing to do with that. as a third person, u def are doing wrong with the palestine. I just see u generalizing them all as muderers and terrorists. I think now you are just seeing how people react when they got into a cornor with full of threat. shame on u, Zionists.
I love Elvis but if he had something to say he should have gone to Israel and said it vs. burning his fan base there. Hamas is a terrorist organization, if Palestinians are serious about peace, they will have to ditch their government. Otherwise negotiations are a joke. I know Elvis is friends with Bruce Springsteen. I would love to overhear a conversation with Max Weinberg over his decision not to play. Dialog is better than boycotting. Loved the jam with Bobby and Phil in NYC Elvis!
How many years of almost every day from Gaza launched thousands of rockets to kill civilians in Israel? You would want your children blown up in buses on their way to school? Do not you think it strange that almost all terrorists in the world - the Arabs? They do not want peace. Look at the map of the Middle East. Israel - a tiny dot on the map, which prevents many millions of Arab murderers. Shame on the Arab terrorists and those who support them!
Who is this bald guy who wants me to buy tickets for his miserable performance?
Is not that Elvis, who has not sold last year enough tickets in Israel, and made an infamous act, declaring that he supports the Palestinian murderers? Arab terrorists, murderers of children and women around the world? He loves terrorists? Then, let invites you to his concert Al Qaeda and the Taliban! Let him go to the show for Gaddafi!
@MrZenik74 an Israeli could say that without the tongue burning in the mouth White phosphorus fired at civilians in the Gaza Ghetto by European Ashkenazim who forced those who gave you refuge from the oppression visited on you by Christians for two thousand years .Shame on Zionists
Really? You either don't understand (re: see song...) or are a teabagger who hates "empathy", which is what the song is about (see 'understanding") You have no idea about Elvis, or even this song, or you'd understand we're under assault by forces trying to kill peace, love and understanding. Pull your mind out of your bagger baggage...
Great to see a more recent performance by Elvis than the original video when he looked like he was just a punk kid. There's also a great Nick Lowe acoustic version from 2007 on YouTube. Search "Nick Lowe What's So Funny..." (Very, very strange that YouTube doesn't allow URLs--even to their own content--in comments.)
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Steve Earle is cool (as is Elvis) but the song was written by Nick Lowe... I like Earle's interpretation too but the Elvis version was earlier and is pretty much the best known -- the first version was by Lowe's band Brinsley Schwarz.
You're a bit of dick aren't you??? No Really! A man's looks makes a great song shit huh? What are you about 350 lbs. & will never come close to such greatness.
I first became familiar with this song from the 1979 Elvis Costello version and later found out it was written by Nick Lowe (who was Elvis' producer at the time). I have never heard the original 1974 Brinsley Schwarz release but am also a Nick Lowe, Rockpile and Dave Edmunds fan.
I wonder what kind of threats and pressure it took to cause Elvis and others to cancel their Israeli tours. Elvis had said in prior interviews that he'd play ANYWHERE because no matter where he played it always presented an opportunity for cultural exchange and an opportunity to change a bad national situation. It doesn't seem as if he believes in boycotting his fans in any country. So who got to him and how? Some say there were threats of a fatwa to kill artists who played in israel.
i guess my point is that when elvis cancelled his Israeli tour, he chose a side in a small struggle that is part of a larger picture of world wide conflict.
Did he do this out of conviction? His public statement is ambiguous. He said something about it being a matter of "conscience and instinct" and then made some other vague statements about the meaning of music. But it left many unanswered questions. And I for one would like to hear Mr. Costello answer some of them in an honest manner..
@dubified89 then why did he book concerts in Israel to begin with? Maybe he's been intimidated by people in favor of "racism and ethnic cleansing", i.e. Hamas and its supporters? And why don't you start asking yourself some harder questions you faux-liberal idiot?
@widdo17 fair enough. Is he cancelling his concerts in Apartheid Syria as well? How about in Apartheid Turkey where Kurds are separate but unequal? how about the entire middle east, where different religions and people live separately?
Elvis needs to show some peace love and understanding for the people of Israel who are under constant threat from their neighbors for not being Muslim.

@derNaziHunter you hate them, they hate you around and around it goes. youll say " but you dont understand" who started it , who did this or that. the bible sez this... who cares?
@adzug yeah exactly, i agree. but then why take sides? that doesn't cause peace. btw, i don't give a crap what a make believe bible says, im an agnostic
@derNaziHunter well ok why take sides? good question. i really dont know why he didnt wanna play isreal. but i cud see being sick of the whole fukkin squabble going on there. and i mention the bible cuz its the claim the religous use and its sickening to see adults using an imaginary friend as an excuse for murder and genocide. to be honest i wish the jews got a big cut of germany after ww2 but that doesnt matter now.
@adzug@adzug as far as using the bible to justify murder & genocide, yes that's despicable. Its also despicable when the Koran is used for this purpose by the other side.
& ur right, a part of germany should have become Israel, & had this happened, there would b nothing for any1 to complain about. then again, if the jewish refugees were like palestinians, i guess they'd still be camped round germany since 1945 waiting for their right 2 return 2 their TRULY stolen land. But that would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? :D
@derNaziHunter except they wudnt of had been kicked out in the first place. ya know trading snipes doesnt really do much good. isreal has the power of supplying water and power and work visas. thats why ppl often cite them as the prob. i dont see it all as one sided but building in west bank east jerusalem, this is going to end badly until theres some conciliation to palestinians. maybe then there wont be rocket attacks? i dont know, but i wont blame elvis for having probs playing there.
@adzug i get it.- the old "you people fighting" thing. you think its Israel's fault anyway even though as you say you see the other side. my indian friends get the same response when talking about pakistan.where it's islamicists vs. hindus. In russia it's islamacists vs. athiests, each isolated case seems like just some backward people fighting with both sides being bad.
But that view never sees the pattern of global jihad. And to deny that pattern is to be blinded to a very important reality
@derNaziHunter no , i dont hink " oh its all isreals fault. " and i hate global jihadists. they are trully evil of evil. id fight and die for secularism. but i see a future where this prob isnt fixed in a world where nuclear capability comes easier n easier. it shud be a priority for isreal to get palestine its own country and this settled. the "you ppl" thing goes for extemeists both isreali n pal. they are disgusting. i wish both reasonable pals n isrealis nothing but peace.
My full respects and thanks are extended to you Elvis. Energetic and quality recording... Elvis Costello is the only artist that I listened to from the beginning 77-78 as a high school sophmore though today. THere is never a long period of time that passes that I don't feel like hearing something from his vast recording history... Look forward to hearing and seeing his latest Austin City Limits November 09
Elvis Costello delivers great vocals + The musicians in his band are incredible + The positive energy from the audience is terrific. It all adds up to a great video. Outstanding!
There used to be a version of this Song on YouTube from a DVD(?) Live by Request. Could someone please re-up that? This one's good, but that is a real blast.
and it was filmed in midtown where I live in 2004 and he came back for another filmed gig in 2005 and I didn't know about it. I need to listen to the radio more.
Super-intelligent guy who put on great live show (well when he's doing his great early stuff). Really I can't think of any band that is as good "live".
Peace, love, and understanding-- Shalom! Ahava! Sekhel! Thanks for this great song from a country where we long for all three with every drop of blood and every tear and all the sweat of our labor. Kisses from a gay Israeli motorcycle rider who has never given up the hope you sing so well.
This is only Elvis Costello, the guy who originally wrote, produced and recorded this classic and AWESOME song! Not his best performance by a country mile, but still the ORIGINAL.
Elvis and Nick are longtime buddies. Nick has been very happy with the royalties Elvis' version has generated for him. Elvis said, of Nick, "I have NO idea why he's not in the R&R Hall of Fame".
A version of WSFAPL&U was included on the soundtrack for "The Bodyguard" (bad 1990's film starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston). Nick said that the royalties from that album alone made him richer beyond his wildest dreams.
It seems you do though. All you had to do was ignore my comment ... that I wrote a month ago. Instead you question me. Yeah you care more than everyone else how commented after me.
He sounds better than he used to when he was younger, he's able to give more of himself with the experience and training he's received; but he needs to watch it, and maybe brush up on his singing technique. Because while he sounds very good now, you can tell he's straining himself and that's bad for his voice.
I read an interview Elvis Costello gave about this time and the interviewer asked him, "What's so funny about...(etc)" and he replied, "I don't know, why don't you ask Pres Bush"
'World March for Peace and Nonviolence' to circle our Earth, and help build a new nonviolent global consciousness. Demand an end to war and nuclear arms and an end to violence of all kinds (physical, economic, racial, religious, cultural, sexual, psychological). Demand a new world!
You know the audio upload on this song doesnt sound at all like the DVD. The mix is stero, and the actual mix is 5.1. You can hear the beer bottles breaking in the background. This is dull. The real thing on the DVD is great. One of the best Club Dates Michael Borofsky ever made. Elvis is great from note one to the end. If you like this video, get the DVD of Elvis at the High Tone in Memphis. Even the bonus documentary of EC driving around the delta is great. Its too bad this audio sucks.
I heard APC's version for the first time. It will also be the last. My god, it sucks!!! So monotonous and BORING!! EC made this ong a classic. Great f-ing song.
Elvis used to sing the song with a sense of mocking bitterness. That was 29 years ago buddy. People age and thier embers cool a bit. He's enjoying himself a bit more these days.
perhaps, but saw him do this (with Emmylou Harris) on the NBC Today Show plaza, Friday July 9th 2005, two days after the bombings in London. Blistering is the word.
Ins´t it a song from a TV series? I´m trying to remember which one.

Zionist Jews call those that Resist Occupation and illegal racial colonies... 'Terrorists' Rather than those that are The Occupiers..
If Jews are serious about peace, they must ditch Their government or go back to their real homeland of Khazaria Asia.

I'm very confused as well. I think talking to leaders who choose to talk rather than bomb is a step twoards "Peace Love and Understanding" indeed.

I saw this on VH1 Classic last night
and it was filmed in midtown where I live in 2004 and he came back for another filmed gig in 2005 and I didn't know about it.

WyldeRadio 2 years ago
Didn't write it. Didn't originally record it. Written and recorded by Nick Lowe while he was in Brinsley Schwarz.
BAXMAN13 2 years ago
Thanks for the info. I thought Elvis originally recorded it on an album...

Elvis and Nick are longtime buddies. Nick has been very happy with the royalties Elvis' version has generated for him. Elvis said, of Nick, "I have NO idea why he's not in the R&R Hall of Fame".
chipchaw 2 years ago
A version of WSFAPL&U was included on the soundtrack for "The Bodyguard" (bad 1990's film starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston). Nick said that the royalties from that album alone made him richer beyond his wildest dreams.

LOL. LONG LIVE IGNORANT SHEEP...
ruleoforder 3 years ago
He sounds better than he used to when he was younger, he's able to give more of himself with the experience and training he's received; but he needs to watch it, and maybe brush up on his singing technique. Because while he sounds very good now, you can tell he's straining himself and that's bad for his voice.

I read an interview Elvis Costello gave about this time and the interviewer asked him, "What's so funny about...(etc)" and he replied, "I don't know, why don't you ask Pres Bush"
krogdog 3 years ago
probably was refering to the first Bush...so what was his answer?
Crowsfan55 3 years ago
Umm no. The interview was around this time (2004) so he meant W. And that WAS his answer.

A great performance

It's lacking the passion of the 1980's.
He sounds like a cheesey lounge singer, here.
coolhand1uke 3 years ago
Elvis used to sing the song with a sense of mocking bitterness. That was 29 years ago buddy. People age and thier embers cool a bit. He's enjoying himself a bit more these days.
dylanfan1969 3 years ago 2
perhaps, but saw him do this (with Emmylou Harris) on the NBC Today Show plaza, Friday July 9th 2005, two days after the bombings in London. Blistering is the word.
