  • as they say if it dont smoke black take that shit back

  • @MyGreybush If it's putting out black smoke, then you're just wasting fuel... ;-)

  • @higrafey Black smoke can occur across the entire operating range, but is usually worst under full power, or during the lag before the turbocharger boosts air supply to match the fuel usage such as in the early stages of acceleration and during gear changes. Moderate turbo lag smoke is acceptable; otherwise black smoke should be hardly visible in a correctly running engine. So other words BLACK SMOKE :) badass jeep though im looking to put a 4bt in a xj

  • @MyGreybush Yup, that's a good explanation. Your XJ sounds like a cool diesel project. Good luck!

  • sir you have a nice engine!... how much is it? i mean the price of that engine thanks sir...

  • @03at Thanks! Most of these engines can be had for $2000-4000 USD, though it's often cheaper to buy the whole truck and pull the motor.

  • Damn I'm jealous!

  • Hey man, make sure to update this somewhere with what the actual MPG numbers are!

  • Love it

  • man, thats cool. it my 2.2 ever goes out, i want to put a 4jb1 into it. isuzu diesel and a jeep make a nice combination.

  • I have this tinkling in my pants when I watch this video.

  • what kind of power does the engine have? What's the gas mileage?

  • @greatplanesman The engine puts out 135 hp @ 2800 rpm and 265 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm. This project is still underway, so I don't have mpg numbers yet. I'm expecting low 20s.

  • @higrafey why did you put that in there, i figured the point of a diesel engine would be mmore power but it has less.

  • @XyenkocamaroX There's more to engine selection than rated output. The torque curve is more important than horsepower, in this case. And besides, not everyone wants or needs a 500 hp monster engine, especially in a short-wheelbase Jeep.

  • how hard was the swap

  • @speedfreak460 It's like swapping anything else into a Jeep, but you need to make some custom parts (motor mounts, crossmembers, frame reinforcements). The toughest part was finding an engine adapter so I could use a standard GM transmission.

  • @higrafey Why not use a cummins 4bt, How expensive was the isuzu motor

  • @speedfreak460 Everyone uses a 4BT, and I wanted to try something different. The Isuzu engine is quieter, smoother, and produces the same amount of power. I'd recommend buying a donor truck instead of just the motor -- an old NPR can be had for around $2000-$4000 depending on condition.

  • @higrafey Chrysler are idiots for restricting diesel-powered Jeeps to Europe. Nice work, and I "get it" as I'm currently swapping out a Westerbeke W-52 (actually the Mazda S2 2.2L diesel found in old B2200s and Ford Rangers from the '80s) with a new Beta Marine 60 (a Kubota 2.4L) in my steel sailboat.

So there's a lot of measuring and fabrication in my near future.

  • @svalchemy Ah yes, I know all about measuring and fabrication. At least mine doesn't have to float. :-) Good luck on your sailboat. Sounds like a cool project.

  • @svalchemy

Amen to that! I would love to walk into a dealership and get a brand new diesel Jeep complete with a warranty instead of having to do it independently. Too bad Chrysler killed it. I think there's a reason Fiat owns them now.

  • @Yardjass I don't actually own a car because I live closely to my two sailboats, one with a workhorse 30 HP inboard gas engine designed in WWII called an "Atomic 4", and the other with a new diesel I'm prepping to install.

If a biggish car company made something like a Ford Transit or a Nissan Cube or a Honda Element with the little 40 HP diese that came in the first gen Mercedes Smart Car, with a hybrid option for lithium ion batteries and regenerative braking to charge them, I would buy it!

  • @svalchemy

Haha, that would be aawesome even with just a small diesel and not all of those hybrid components. Doesn't the smart car get like 85 mpg with that engine? I'm waiting for that 24/36 mpg wrangler that they already have out in Europe. Either that or a diesel Fiesta or something similar sized. I'll probably be waiting a long time though...

  • @Yardjass Jeep does make them... I just saw a 3.0 diesel Grand Cherokee on the road here in florida 5 days ago.

  • @ucf08

Yeah, I remember those. I'm really partial to the wrangler though. I just bought a Golf TDI but I'd trade it in a heartbeat if they brought the diesel wrangler from Europe over here.

  • How's the gas mileage since it's a diesel now?

  • @69in89 I'm still working on the driveline and body, so it's not on the road yet. I'm hoping for 18-22 mpg, though.

  • Why didn't you paint the engine before dropping it in?

I will be putting in a marine grade 4 cylinder in mine but it is brand new and going into a TJ not YJ. i like the leaf springs better

  • @Sunfadedlovejaded This was a test fit and firing. The engine will be painted before the project is complete.

  • @higrafey

    What color?

BTW What you got there is a classic. I had an 87, it was rigged as a rock crawler, full roll cage, skids, engine, 60 dana's, lockers, rockers, gears, etc..I bought it for 500 bucks from an old boatyard. Sold it for 15,000. It was built and never used. It sat for 5 yrs. Only thing was the floor boards thanks to it having no cover but still a little elbow grease and it paid off. Jeeps are so much fun and the Manufacturer should put a diesel in and coils springs out

  • @Sunfadedlovejaded The engine and Jeep will likely be the same color, a flat desert tan. Industrial style. Sounds like you had a pretty cool Jeep there. I agree that they ought to make a diesel available to the U.S. market. It's doubtful that will happen, since most everyone would rather drive a hybrid or an electric car.

  • @higrafey

    Color?

  • sweet swap I have a 6bd1t in a 79 gmc crewcab

  • @deuce100384 Sounds like a cool swap!

  • pleas tell me if it is a 4x4

  • @bigamushead Yes, it's a 4x4.

  • How was the swap other building motor mounts whatd you have to do??? Whatd you do for tranny and wiring? Looking to do this but need info on how!

  • @rockinbass01 I already addressed the transmission questions in an earlier comment, so please check there for answers. The wiring isn't set up yet, but it should be easy to separate the YJ body wiring from the engine's wiring -- this is a fairly uncomplicated engine, especially if you bypass the glow plug controller and wire them up manually.

  • Shoulda Used a 4bt Cummins.

  • @mtyemti ...and be like every other diesel-swapping person on the planet. Yup.

  • That's a sweet build. I was wanting to shoehorn a diesel into my ford ranger but sadly i sold it. NExt truck i get i will def be a diesel

  • have you got this wrangler on (or off) the road yet?

  • @jeeper88 Not yet -- still working on some custom axles and extending the wheelbase.

  • @higrafey keep posting vids

  • Isuzu rules in diesel technology...

It provide engine to GM since 1970, for example Chevrolet LUV, many trucks, and other vehicles....

Duramax motor was development by Isuzu, you can visit the Isuzu company and you see that i'm talking about.

Isuzu is the most big manufactured from diesel motor, and provide engine for many others things like boats, etc...

  • @DEXH2K chevrolet luv was a rebadged isuzu, not a gm vehicule. It's after the luv that gm saw the potential of small pickup and built the s10. I'd love to have one of those small isuzu pickup with a 2.2 diesel

  • @DEXH2K Yes, no one has been making diesel engines longer than Isuzu except Peugot. Duramax engines are built in the U.S.

  • That is very impressive. I see you thought a lot about the fine details. Very nice!

  • Verry nice and good thinkin on the bell.

  • bit low on bhp these engines arent they for their size? about 100bhp and 200lbft?

I know the 6 cylinder version has 150bhp and 289lbft for a 5.8 litre, although they run forever!

  • @tpvalley My 3.9L is rated at 130 hp and 255 lb-ft at 2800 rpm. I think you might be referring to the non-turbo 4BD1 that was used back in the 1980s. The torque comes on at about 800 rpm and stays nearly flat. This engine has 225k on the clock and it runs like a top, aside from a bit of blow-by.

  • gmc use isuzu?

  • @tpvalley Yes, the GMC and Isuzu medium-duty trucks are very similar. The engine is an Isuzu design, but GM has owned them since the 1970s.

  • @higrafey

which v8 diesel is GMC using?

duramax? I think thats an isuzu design.

  • @tpvalley Yep, that's right. The old 6.2 and 6.5 were designed by Detroit, but the Duramax came from Isuzu.

  • @higrafey wait the dirtmax came from a isuzu? and the old 6.2's and 6.5's were by detroit.. i thought so classic engines i tell ya nothing beats them

  • @walkingfreak Yes, GM and Isuzu co-developed the Duramax engines used in today's GM trucks. The engine in my YJ, from a GMC/Isuzu box truck, isn't considered a Duramax... but it's still a GM/Isuzu engine.

  • @higrafey 4bd2 is a 100% isuzu. duramax was designed by isuzu and built by gm.

Nice choice of engine, not only they run forever, but they can be rebuilt easily since they have liners.

  • what tranny and transfer case are you running... if stock where did you get the adapter?

  • @luciusthegod I'm running an SM465/NP205 combo from a late-'70s GM truck. I began machining my own transmission adapter, but those plans changed when I came across an industrial Isuzu 4BD adapter. It converts the bellhousing to a truck-style GM Saginaw transmission bolt pattern.

  • did you replace the fan plenum yet?

  • @greenmountainsolar By fan plenum, I guess you mean the fan shroud? I'm going to install an electric fan when the Jeep is finished, so there won't be a conventional shroud. The clutch-driven fan was for testing purposes.

  • yeah..the shroud... you know, for simplicities sake, the plenum combined with a 'flex fan' would really crank a lot of air through the radiator at low speed 4 wheeling... they are fairly cheap and simple to install. just a thought.

  • @greenmountainsolar Thanks for the advice. I was leaning towards an electric fan for the sake of clearance; I need to move the engine forward a few inches to improve my rear driveline angles.

  • wow..the torque was moving the jeep... you better have a light foot or a strong drivetrain... i really want a diesel engine in my wrangler... nice work..!

  • sweet, i luv D sound of DieseL.
