I think that the biggest failure in the new movie was that they did the graphics way too photorealistic and the original had more of a very unique and very beautiful artistic style. I mean look at the graphics of the new movie, it even has scuff marks in many areas to make it more "photorealistic" but scuff marks in computer generated objects that are shape changing??? Where is the sense in that?
That old software in those supercomputers (Cray 1's, very fast back then but a turtle nowadays - easily surpassed by even low end PCs today) didn't calculate the animation, it only rendered still frames!! So there was still a lot of manual calculation for the trajectories of all the 3D objects, very, very impressive.
To me the original is still better even tough I do like the artwork on the second one too. Back there the only way to compute that kind of graphics was with supercomputers and animation software didn't have tweening meaning that it could not compute the in between frames (between key frames) automatically so what they did to compute the animation was mathematics and curves with graph paper!! Yes the path for all the 3D objects in all three coordinates was calculated by hand!!. Yikes!!!
Stays ÜBERcool, even now...the computersounds, the tension, design...and Jeff Bridges is epic. 2010 version can't display any of this feeling...it's hollowed out

As I see it both movies are epic from one single point of view - they are both unique. Tron was made when practically there were around 5 companies in the world to compute and render every single line of 1 object in a 3 dimensional space. 600 code lines for each 6 seconds pr. scene. I think we all can imagine the task it was and the cost of it - does that make Tron a good movie . no. It's the story combined with breathtaking technology for it's time.

Yeah, Tron Legacy is up-to-date with contemporary special effects, but back in 1982, Tron was completely original and unique in storyline, design, concept, and visual and special effects. Tron Legacy is a good film, but unfortunately for it, the Matrix trilogy does a much better take on virtual reality. Basically, it is an appreciate for originality and creativity. Don't get me wrong, Tron Legacy is good. But Tron captured public attention.
Agree. I think I can suspend my disbelief more for the 1982 version since everything looks "artificial" in a plausable way. Where as the 2010 one visual is stunning nonetheless but everything you see is too life-like - just doesn't quite convey a world made out of 0011001011101 - We all "know" the story but what we "see" seems like a story misrepresented visually.

Those graphics were pretty good back in 1982. I think they're okay now, though they don't compare to the CGI from Tron Legacy. But what the heck; this is a classic.
The new light cycle race in TRON: Legacy is cool, but I still like this one even better! And I have NO IDEA how many quarters I dropped into the TRON video game just so I could play the light cycle levels!!! Finally 'beat' the game... only to be disappointed by the fact that all the game did was reset itself back to level one and start over... so I got a 'free game'!

I loved the costumes of the original Tron. You would have thought with the EL wire an micro circuitry you would have seen more intricate costumes in the Legacy. Legacy should have had more intricate costumes to resemble the first movie as apposed to just one line running the length of the costume.

I still think this scene is better than the light bike scene in Legacy. The effects might be crappy but there is more tension in this one.

@mayraymauri I don't really like whan people are saying that the original is better because like, it's the original and you "can't touch the original!" In my opinion Tron legacy was alot better like the story was better and the lightbike scene was a lot more badass!

@bouchandre sorry but the original was much better. Yeah, Tron Legacy is up-to-date with contemporary special effects, but back in 1982, Tron was completely original and unique in storyline, design, concept, and visual and special effects. Tron Legacy is a good film, but unfortunately for it, the Matrix trilogy does a much better take on virtual reality. Basically, it is an appreciate for originality and creativity. Don't get me wrong, Tron Legacy is good. But Tron captured public attention.

Agree. I think I can suspend my disbelief more for the 1982 version since everything looks "artificial" in a plausable way. Where as the 2010 one visual is stunning nonetheless but everything you see is too life-like - just doesn't quite convey a world made out of 0011001011101 - We all "know" the story but what we "see" seems like a story misrepresented visually.

@baw0909: Exactly... you stole my thoughts!! lol... when I watched the movie, I was really expecting the sudden turns of the bikes in 90 degrees... I mean just compare the two scenes... for me the new one could look badass... but the first one is way more interesting and entertaining.

@bouchandre: I never said TRON LEGACY is not good... I was specific to a scene, I like the whole movie and it has great effects.. which we actually see in many, many movies these days. anyways I still like the OLD 1982 Bike scene.. might not look as awesome as the new one but I prefer the old one with the 90 degrees sudden turns, for me it's better... and I'm sure you might seen movies where you'd thought that the original is better... sometimes happens and we all have a different points of view

@mayraymauri i will not disagree with you about the actually plot of the film, but the visual captivity that the 2010 version sends out is rather amazing and shocking, the film as a whole was only captivating by the quality and amazing graphical content, the plot was horrible though this scene is what started all of it though :)

The new light cycle race in TRON: Legacy is cool, but I still like this one even better! And I have NO IDEA how many quarters I dropped into the TRON video game just so I could play the light cycle levels!!! Finally 'beat' the game... only to be disappointed by the fact that all the game did was reset itself back to level one and start over... so I got a 'free game'!

I loved the costumes of the original Tron. You would have thought with the EL wire an micro circuitry you would have seen more intricate costumes in the Legacy. Legacy should have had more intricate costumes to resemble the first movie as apposed to just one line running the length of the costume.
Just my opinion though.
