i used to live in Magdalena, been up to kelly quite alot for the Kelly Fiestas and drinking as a teenager. you can throw a nice softball size rock down that main shaft and not hear it hit bottom. I always wanted to send down a video camera on a fishing pole to see whats down there, maybe my next visit i will.
thee ol" kelly mine was last worked in 1946, the magdalena mining district did pretty good, lead and zinc were king there, suppling lead for bullets for both world wars and with 33+ miles of tunnels. as the pockets ran out, and the demand for lead-(for lead paint) the remaining mining companies ended up with the abandoned town site of kelly, which shorty afterwards was burned and/or bulldozed to the ground. for propertyt tax reasons.
