There's group called "The Budos Band" and they are the closest to The Daktaris as far as I know so far. Check their track called "Up From The South, Eastbound" Very The Budos Band-ish! :D
yeah yeah I got this LP too, one of the best funkiest albums I have ever heard....load up the track "Super Afro Beat" one of the sickest songs ever. I believe some of the members of this band went on to Antibalas.....
Interesting. According to Wikipedia, the Daktaris were not african at all. They were comprised of studio musiciansin Brooklyn. There was great interest in the group by Afro funk enthusiasts, but the label had to admit that the group wasn't all that african, or even african-american. Nice grooves, though.
Hello, actually the Daktaris (almost) correctly credit the song to the "Wallais Band of Ethiopia" on the cover. The Wallias Band was led by Hailu Mergia, and Mulatu was one of the members... so that seems okay to me.
Mulatu didnt compose this song . It was composed by Girma Beyene. He was an unsung piano player and arranger who was a super close friend of Mulatu. Long live Ethio-Jazz and Ethio music!!
need the second part of that tune

hahaha! always love this band.
I once heard that the meaning of Daktaris is something like group of elephants dashing out of control or something. Anyone knows if it's true?

I read that "Daktaris" is Swahili for "doctors", but I don't know if that's true.
