there are many cases in which singers steals the work of somebody else. and this is one of them. if u don't know anything about that don't try to be smart.
Judging by the way you speak, i am sure i know much more than you do..of course....where you are you wouldn't know what copy right means...among other things!!!
@abodkh. While what you say is true in some situations, The writer of the Lyrics is the Owner of the Copyright (property rights). And as an ownwe he sells those right to others for MONEY, Its all about money my friend. And why not?
@abodkh I DO NOT deny that this may be the case....in fact where i live there is a court case over a singer accused of stealing lyrics from a children's song over 70 years old. But i have not heard of Manolis Angelopoulos appearing before a judge, accused of STEALING anyone's music or words. Could that be because he paid for the rights? SO DO NOT TELL ME THAT I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING.And by the way if you cannot write English properly don't try to BE SMARTand pretend you know how!!!!
Gypsies are Pakistani and Hindu 4th cast people. They came to Nothern Europe via the Russsian steppes (golden silk roads) or trough Egypt (eGYPTos) from where the word "gypsy" derives. Gypsy means Egyprian.

friends, does anyone know why the melody is the same as in an old Egyptian song by Abdelhalim Hafez, extremely popular then (and even now)called nibtidi minen il-hikaya? did Greek and Egyptian musicians know each other? Or somebody just used the other's melody? Who was it then? I don't think it's bad anyway, I just love the melody and want to know more..
It seems that the journey was one-way: when they ran out of insights, Greek composers imported tunes from faraway lands like India and the Arab world; there is no evidence of movement in the opposite direction or of popularity of Greek music beyond Israel and Turkey.
One of Aggelopoulos' best songs, "Your kisses are fire", is officially listed as an Arabic composition (Enta Omri); this one is not listed as such, but I knew it was Arabic in orgigin, even though I was missing the exact source :-)
Manolis was a Greek Gipsy (or Giftos) which means Egyptian. So it is not unusual that he would be exposed to the Egyptian music. The notes sound very much Arabic. And you will find the Egyptian version on u-tube. In any event, Manolis version sounds better.
well, Manolis doesn't look Egyptian at all, and I don't see the connection betw. Egyptians and Gipsies anyway. as for whose version's better, it's a matter of taste. I think they are just different - both good in their own way. Abdelhalim was THE singer in his day, after all. But Manolis is more spirited!
well, of course - just listen to Abdelhalim.. if you-tube version doesn't have lyrics, it's because the Eg. song is - no kidding - 55 minutes long, the words start later! the 1st lines: if we were to tell (our story), my love, from where do we start? for the story of our love has more than one beginning..

Arabic, yes. As for Greek, actually it was my love for Greek music that made up my mind to learn it. So far I can understand commments and song lyrics, but hardly speak or write. i'll try to see who wrote lyrics/music for the Arabic version. Abdelhalim, you see, hardly ever wrote his own.
I think Aggelopoulos knew Abdel Halim Hafez, since he liked to sing arabic songs (among others), so this was probably not a coincidence. Also, in a couple of my cd's Aggelopoulos is credited with "song adaptation" not with "song composition".
I love both versions, but a link to the full arabic version would be great. Thanks for mentioning the credits.
I'd be glad to oblige but as I've mentioned before, it's rather long. For the same reason it's not usually available on arabic music sites. I have an mp3, it's 51 Mb. if you're really interested I could upload it somewhere and send you a link.

Manolis Angelopoulos was a "roma" or "gypsy". These are descendants of a Hindu tribe that left India and started a nomadic life. Those who came to Greece through Egypt were called "gypsies" (gyftoi). There are also others who came through the Balkans and their descendants live mostly in Achaia. Manolis Angelopoulos, this great singer, does not look like a Greek or an Egyptian, he looks like a man from India. From the land that all Roma came from.
