Well, it works in certain respects...Remember, the film is constantly highlighting the banality and ultimate emptiness of "the American dream"...What better than for Bruno to be driving a pick-up on a desolate road w/ no destination, while the most kitschy, "soulless" muzak begins to play...The contradiction works...It also lends to the scene's ambiguity...Yes, all appears bleak, but the viewer is unsure of where exactly things are headed--a 'feel-good' ending? (w/Herzog ha ha;)
I got it, 'Last thing on my mind' I believe this is the Les and Mary version, a lot of sites say its the Chet Atkins, I didn't hear his version in the film.
Notice for example the change in the soundtrack at 1:22 and how it changes to mood of the driving scene.
Now, this is what I actually call film and not wasting my time in trying to avert me from the banality of existence.
The subtle reference to the situation of Native Americans reminds us on what the American dream is built upon, Kubrick was probably inspired by this in The Shining to do something similar.
A great Cinema lesson!

Love this movie.
But the music that comes on at 1:22 is horrible, just overkill
