i like that you made these videos and didn't seem to go the "poor pathetic blind person route". as someone who has been legally blind from birth, i really appreciate that and commend you.
in north america/united states white canes have usually have red tips to enhance visability. in europe it's common for canes to be all white for just regular blind folks and white with a red tip for the deafblind.
I have such a hard time dealing with blind people lol. I feel so bad for them that I can't stop crying and I'm a guy!! I would do anything in the world too could find a cure for blindness.
@RocksBodybuilding lol dont cry, it makes it hard for us that are blind or visually impaired to be around people that do get really upset because usually the people getting really upset wont stop crying long enough to tell us what is upsetting them haha
Where do you get one of those blindfolds? I want to try being blind for a day. Not to make fun of blind people. To see what their life is like.
I happen to have bad eyesight (got four times worse in a year, and it was already bad) and it just keeps getting worse and by the time I'm an adult I'll either have seriously blurry eyesight that's so bad I need to were both contacts and two-tone glasses that are really thick or I'll be blind. So I wanna see what it's like.
@reidrules45 black t shirt does it well. done a "blind for the hour" for just under an hour, and will do "blind for a day" for every Sunday I remember to do it. Anyone want to sponsor me? No thanks. Just send money to RNIB or the NFB in the USA.
im an education student as well i love the fact you had to live with a disability to experience what others have to live with ive done similiar things with my aunt who is blind so i can understand what she deals with on a daily basis. I LOVE that there is a teacher out there who would think of this kind of activity. I believe that this should be an activity that all education students should go through.
I really wish that learning how to deal with blindness for 1 day 9or 1 week) was a requirement in todays educational system. Jaclyn has learned what the rest of us go through. only we don't have the option of taking off the blindfold at the end of the day.
As for the question about social pressures, I didn't hear any whispers or comments about me. The camera was hidden the entire time in the restaurant so that wasn't a cause for attention. So, no I didn't pick up on any awkwardness from the people around me. Thanks for the questions. Keep em coming!
I am Jaclyn. The one in the video. I am in college to become a teacher and this particular video was an assignment for my special education class. The objective was to understand what it feels like to live with a disability for an entire day and to use what we learned to be able to better teach our students with disabilities. I would absolutely do it again if i had to and would recommend it for any teacher interested in becoming a better teacher.
I am sighted, and I have the NVDA screen reader on my computer, though I don't need it at all. I realize how frustrating it is, the pages take forever to load, with NVDA you can't use messenger, and my college just changed e-mail system, which NVDA won't read. I realize how frustrating it can be for blind people. And without the screen reader, I feel completely lost. I think they would work better with JAWS. Hopefully, at least. It is frustrating, and I am not actually blind.
I think many people who may watch this video series may ask themselves those yet unanswered questions, so I'm posting them here, publically. I hope to get an answer that will put a new light (LOL again!) on that very inetresting experience.
Jaclyn : In the restaurant you say you feel no social pressure because you can't see the people... but you can HEAR them ? Didn't you spot people wondering what you were doing here, blindfolded and filmed ?
Jaclyn : Would you do it again if you had a chance to ? Would you accept doing it for several days in a row ? Would you recommand other people to live the same experience ?
Jaclyn : Why did yo do that experiment ? The info says it has something to do with school, but what ? I don't think any country has comulsory blindness classes, altough it might be interesting and... let's say... "eyes opening" (Lol!). Can you tell me more about why this experience took place ?
Boy, you sure made me nervous with your fingers around that light socket! Other than that, I was glad to see you considering things that many people might not, like the difference in room size. Very "observant." ;)
@WildkatPublishing do you use a screen reader and a braille-marked QWERTY?
@FantasyFanatic911 You are in the same world as the one in which people who can see (I can see quite perfectly actually, not in my right eye tho only 20/60 there :( ) live in.
@monkeycollins12 i am visually impaired myself. I know that's different than being blind but you will get through it. There are all these cool things for the blind so it wont be like really hard on him. He gets to use all these cool things! It is hard for the parents. Sometimes my mom doesn't really know what i can see and what i cant see. I just tell her what i can see and then sometimes there are things i cant see so i tell her that too :)

@FantasyFanatic911 if u were blind u couldn't see the video. or anything else not trying to be mean.
heathergirl5 1 month ago
@heathergirl5 They more than likely have somebody helping them navigate youtube and describe what is going on in the video while they listen to it.
There is also software available for blind people that will read all of the text on screen so they can use a computer.

@reidrules45 have you got the details on what to use (cane painted black? is that allowed) for BFAD
jjovereats 4 months ago
@jjovereats Yes. Actually, the cane is white with with a red tip.
reidrules45 4 months ago
@reidrules45 Red tip means deafblind. But is painting it black defacement or just stupid (when using it blindfolded)?
jjovereats 4 months ago
@reidrules45 Also, I know.

My mom teaches in an MH classroom and teaches a blind boy. This is an extra one they keep in case their blind students forget theirs at home.

Hi girls,
Your "the blind experience" video series is really interesting. It must have been an experience Jaclyn will remember for quite some time !
I've got several questions for you (Both Jaclyn and Lindsey, the director) :
