Lots of these can be legitimate signs, but only really mean anything when done in order. Like say the 1st base coach taps his head twice, grabs his belt, and wipes his shoulder 3 times its a hit and run. But if he taps his head twice, grabs his belt and wipes his shoulder once it's nothing.
I play baseball, and what we got is call a "key". If you are signing without doing "key" sign, it's nothing. If you are doing random signs until you reach the "key" sign, then the next few sign is the actually signs.
I had this commercial play on my tv and after, another commercial fused with it and this commercial ended in som1 saying ".com"...i was like WTF LMAO, can u repat that again?
@shiron236 Our basketball team did the same thing for baseline fouls. The coach hand-signals the player to pass to the forward from out of bounds, but instead alley-oops it to the center for the dunk.
@KingOfKatamari It's called "keeping the runner on the base", there is just a small chance to pick him out, the runner has to be not paying attention or your pick move and signs have to be really good...
the riverdogs is by far the best atmosphere and venue ive ever been too!! its just the right size and family friendly! ive been chosen three times to be in one of there little games in btween innings and got to announce the line up!:) btw charlie t riverdog is amazing! love going there!
I'm sure it was staged for purposes of the ad. My irritation springs from the bogus, cinematic license-driven depictions of what we do in these fictional representations. More often than not, we're made to look ridiculous rather than in command, inept instead of excellent. I wish fictional portrayals of umpires in film, on television, and in other pop culture media, presented us in a more accurate light, is all.
@umpireplb If your talking about him spitting a the end in reference that the coach was pissed at the ump for calling him safe, I feel that you are mistaken. I got out of it that the coach spit as a sign of "Thats right, get the fuck back on the bag" sort of deal. I don't think this was meant to portray the negative aspects of the umps at all.
The concept is cute, but why do depictions of umpires in sports videos and films portray us so inaccurately? The base umpire in this ad is not only out of position with a runner on second, he uses the worst mechanics I've ever seen to call the play. He's moving as the play happens, and he throws his arms out and lifts his leg as if he were a dog about to take a pee on a fire hydrant to signal "Safe." Plus, the plate umpire is down in his crouch way too early. No wonder people ridicule us.
Is this from a real game or was it staged for the commercial? It's likely that the umpires are actors, or they were put in those positions for TV drama.
@umpireplb...you need to realize this is TV and the "standard" mechanics are boring for TV. You think the coaches and players sign this much every play? NO! It's all fiction in it's context, it's just a TV spot and not real. As for the ridicule, all officials in every sport get it for "questionable" calls, not because of how you're portrayed in this or any commercial or TV spot. Some umpires deserve it as they're horrible at their job, others are great, they get it either way.

Could get confusing at times lol.

Riverdogs were chosen because of a existing ESPN relationship.
The commercial was shot before a Friday night game. In between Citadel pratice and Riverdog game.
The first shot of the crowd was shot game night. The rest is staged.
