I was born many years after these show's golden years and I still find "All in the Family" the best comedy show ever. Original, great characters, great writing and often hilarious. I think it is a show that truly represents all of us.
(No wonder it was so repeatedly copied by other tv shows later.)
All in the Family was a wonderful series, serious issues but also lots of fund and laughs. I still aplaud the wonderful actors after nearly 35 years!!
what else there is to say, that hasn't already been covered in ya'll post. TV is an IDIOT box today....these shows at least triggered a thought or discussion. Today's bull on Tv just adds to the excuse system everyone uses for being ignorant.....well stated folks :-)
Some folks have only just discovered AITF,but i have been a fan of the show since the 70s,and some 32 years after it went off the air,i still laugh at it.I dont think any of the garbage that has come along since could have such staying power. The show`s acting was sometimes so powerful, that it felt like you were watching a real life family. And we often got a little emotional watching it.
I have always been in love with this show. Such wholesome, clean, family television. It is realistic yet fair to all types of people. I am a person of color and have always loved this show. It shed light on the realism of our country. I was never offended by any of the lines in the writing of this show. Great TV is what I call it. What made these individuals great actors, is that they are believable. They made us cry, laugh, angry, happy. When we can walk away a believer, well done.
@suenelson1024 Well said, Sue. As an Italian/Irish (or a WOP/Mick as Archie would put it), I find the show hilarious. It addresses issues in a mature but humorous way. Political correctness be damned...just say things outright.
@trishy621 - saying things outright is a great thing, because at least it let you know ehere you stand. Today, everyone just coverts their true feelings while smiling fakingly into your face :-( It also explains the beginning of gossip - plenty to say behind your back, but nothing when they are in front of you.....cowards!!
That's really cool... at 1:30 you can see the set for a bedroom, directly adjacent the kitchen set. Must have been neat to see how it all played out on stage logistically. Of course on TV, we did not see all the "mechanicals" of the sets, etc...
God even I a kid of today I grew up watching syndicated reruns of shows like this, The Jeffersons, and Sanford and Son. I had a childhood revolved around great televison.
@xanafanadu Sally has had her personal issues, but she has raised a hell of a lot of money for world hunger, and Rob is a big time director. That is both a mean and un-true thing to say, and who the "f'k" are you anyway?
@xanafanadu Sure it must be awful hard to top All In The Family, as EPIC as it was, but Rob and Sally both went on afterwards to do GREAT THINGS. Each of the 4 actors are all highly respected for their work on this show, and similarly respected for just being fine people in general. Each of these actors is entitled to have a life of their own POST All In The Family... And it's interesting to see them doing other work...seeing them out of their AITF characters.
@amolapaz1 She's from the Sisters of Sappho, and he's a gay liberator... Poor Edith thought they were a couple! I can't recall the episode right off...
Sad that today's audiences are raised on such shit as Kate and Jon, and most of that other reality crap. Shows such as All In The Family and Mash were, like said below, groundbreaking. There will never again be shows such as these on TV ever again. Why? Cause most TV veiwers these days are fucking moronic imbeciles.
Average IQ iof the average Western Hemisphere Dweller in 1965 - 120
Average IQ today - 90
Fucking Morons. Like what happens with Kate and John Douchebag matters?
You nailed it on the head, its a true shame that not enough people see things the same way. Guess it shows which way this retarded society has gone in the past decades.
@ProbertFire I couldn't agree more. I wasn't aware of the IQ numbers but, it makes sense to me. As for Jon and Kate, I've never watched - EVER - one of those ignorant shows and never will. Same goes with that other shit like "real housewives", etc. Back in the 60's when I was growing up, TV was called the 'idiot box'. That might've had some truth to it but, today it's VERY true. TV today has so dumbed down this country. TV and all these ignorant 'celeb'. WHO cares what they're doing?
@111Socrates777 It was sarcasm; but I have little doubt that the AVERAGE North American of 1965 was smarter than the AVERAGE NA of today. Today, people don't read, don't write proper letters or essays, and sit in front of the TV FAAAR too long watching utter garbage like reality TV. People today are intellectually LAZY. Our schools don't try hard enough, because the parents want the kids coddled, not taught.
It's a whole discussion. But really, we're de-evolving mentally. A shame...
@ProbertFire I am not American. I have however visited New York, San Fransisco and LA. I never found those people on average dumb, I think they were pretty smart. Although those places are not indicative of the national average, I am sure that through immigration the intelligence level is kept quite stable and high. I think we are at a point of re-allocation of skills and it seems that people have dumbed down, although I do agree that people have become lazier, maybe giving them more time.
@ProbertFire I think we are always evolving and it just sees like we are going backward. The perceived laziness can be good too as it gives one more time for reflection. With immigration into usa I am sure that intelligence is stable.
@ProbertFire I so agree!! Don't forget about all of the other nonsense shows that paint the American TV landscape today, like "The Jersey Shore," "Family Guy," "The Bachelor," etc.
@ProbertFire Actually, your numbers are bunk. The average IQ is, by definition, 100. That's how the tests are benchmarked to begin with. Go look up WAIS-III (the standard clinical IQ test) on Wikipedia if you don't believe me.
@lekoman It's called "Using sarcasm to make a point". Good to see you "caught" that, Einstein. You're obviously part of that "Today's IQ" group that I was showing disdain for. Good for you! Keep KEEPIN' IT REAL there, Einstein!!
@ProbertFire No, you were perhaps using a vernacular understanding of what IQ means... but that isn't the same thing as "sarcasm to make a point". Given your level of understanding of what IQ measures (it isn't what you think it measures), and now your level of understanding of the word "sarcasm" and its meaning... I'm not sure you're in much of position to criticize my intelligence. Given the maturity of your response, though, I guess we could've predicted that.
@lekoman oooo, look at the BIG brain on you, Eistein! You used "vernacular" in a sentence! So, it's OK to call my numbers "bunk" (I was poking fun at society - you are too ABOVE that to have caught the intention obviously), and then play all professor on me? Yeah, I'm in a position to criticize you all right. You're an uppity know-it-all. Get lost, and stay there.
@ProbertFire Well, either I'm an uppity know-it-all or I'm a member of that "Today's IQ" group you were talking about. Make up your mind you angry, angry person. I guess it could also be that you just don't like that I made you look like an ass in public by pointing out the irony of your unintelligently pontificating on "society's intelligence".
@lekoman stop trying to look like an elitist a$ sHole; you've already done the job, Einstein. In public? YouTube is "public"??? Stop giving yourself credit for accomplishing NOTHING, Einstein. OOooo..first "vernacular" and now "pontificating". You obviously spend waaay too much time listening to yourself go on and on, and you NO DOUBT take yourself way too seriously. You're a pathetic tool. Most probably poorly-dressed too. Get some sun, Einstein. Buy a pair of shoes.
@ProbertFire Are you trying to imply YouTube *isn't* public with all those question marks? By the way... Einstein was a physicist. Perhaps you'd be wiser to associate me and all my big words with, I dunno... Webster or Roget or someone. Then I'd really be insulted. *snark*
@lekoman you are very well aware of what I mean concerning YouTube being in public. You're not that much of a moron. Right? And yes..I am WELL AWARE of what Albert Einstein was - who isn't? And you are familiar with the phrase "Nice try Einstein"??? There's some ? marks for you.
Maybe I could associate you, with all your "big words", to...Kim Kardasian. Or maybe Pauley Shore. You pick - and try to pick the SMARTER one.
@ProbertFire I dunno... you keep calling me Einstein, but we're not even talking about general relativity or anything. I just figured I'd give you an assist so you could find the appropriate historical figure to mockingly compare me to. Let's see if we can find one for you. The problem we'll have is that no one like you ever amounted to much. Hmm... I give up. Buh bye.
@lekoman hahahaaa..nice try at the insult, Captain Clueless, but you've failed again. Historical figure to compare you to? Well, hardly historical, but I'm going with Kardasian; however she's probably more masculine, & no doubt dresses better. Maybe you could look her up and split an atom with her..Ohh!! An Einstein reference!! I'm an elitist now! Just like the Captain!! Lucky me! Maybe my mommy will get me those Luke Skywalker jammies now! Just like the Captain! Yipeee!
@ProbertFire It's funny, when I was a kid I was an "outcast" (& fine with it) because I didn't watch Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Sonic, etc. I was 7 & drawn to classic TV, it's all I remember, so while everyone was talking about Pikachu at school I'd been watching Monty Python, I Love Lucy, All in the Family, The Golden Girls, Fawlty Towers, Waiting for God, etc.
A lot of my generation lack a strong sense of self. I don't get it. They'd LOVE AITF if they tried it, but it's not "popular" today.
