@0kaspars Might not be film maker's fault, more likely a quick transfer from film, the aspect ratio (look it up) is probably off - when it was projected in theaters, the projector lenses and other parts of equipment would adjust the way the image was stretched, cropping the sides and top of the frames of film so the mic wouldn't be visible. It does happen that a boom mic slips into a shot now and again, but I see way more mics in movies on youtube than would be accountable for by mistakes.

@TitaniumByFire The murder you speak of actually took place in a Suburb of San Jose, CA., not a small town. The movie itself is not a bio-pic, only loosely based on the actual murder. The writer, Neal Jimenez, based his screenplay on disaffected suburban teens (much like Penelope Spheeris punk opus, 1982's Suburbia) and the characters in the film are based on friends he had growing up in the 'burbs of Sacramento.
