This morning as I led the parade of company trucks to the day's job location, I faked getting lost because of the trance this song put me in. He started singing the second verse a couple streets away and there was no chance in hell I wasn't going to hear the entire thing. I had never even heard it before, but I have since hit replay like 100x. why isnt this on the radio all the fuckin time?! I'm only 23 and have only thought of Bruce for his radio hits, does he have others like this one??
@PrairieDon1021 Try Living In the Future off of Magic; Badlands off of the same album as this; Jackson Cage is kind of similar, but less so; Darkness on the Edge of Town and Tenth Avenue Freeze Out are also very good, though I don't know if the similar you're looking for. Let me know if that helps any (though - and I admit possible bias - the man's entire catalog is quite impressive; I'm 22 and Wild,Innocent, and E Street Shffle,Born to Run,and Darkness on the Edge of Town are my favorite albums)
@PrairieDon1021 Springsteen: I recommend "The River", Thunder Road", "Down-bound Train", "Kitty's Back", "Workin' on the Highway" , No Surrender", My Hometown".
@PrairieDon1021 Dude! He has so many other great songs like this. I'm only 23 as well but have been an avid Bruce fan ever since I was a kid thanks to my dad. I love all of his albums and if you like this song like I do then Im sure you'll enjoy the rest of his albums as well (and if you don't at first then you will once you warm up to them). Seek out his greatest hits collection. That's the best way to start. Some great albums of his include The River, Magic, Darkness on The Edge of Town...
@PrairieDon1021 check out the alternate version to this song if you can find it, believe it or not its even better, same lyrics but a slightly different pace and instruments altered slightly. Also check out Bruce's "the river" im sure you know about the obvious ones by now, but these are two gems that i love.
Still makes me cry, hopes and dreams last a lifetime, a workin man dont stand much of a chance of fulfilling his hopes and dreams these days. Same was true for others many years ago. Sometimes once proud men are no longer and give up. Promised land gives us hope and inspiration! Bruces music cant fix everything but helps us get back on our feet with songs like this!!
I watched the short movie "The Promise: The making of Darkness on the edge of town" and was blown away. Bruce wrote seventy songs for this incredible album and it took then three years to record it. If you get the chance, check it out. The man is a true genius.
I might be the coolest person that ever lived in North America. Next to Crazy Horse, that is. So listen up kiddies. Bruce has a sad way of letting you down as the years progress. He represents to me, all that is phoney with "Circle jerking, motherfucking cry-baby, wannabe real tough, pussy ass punks". Hey, tht's just my take, sue me.
Bruce is the real thing. when He and the E st. band played a gig in Helsink, I was in an other world. 3 hours and 15 iminutes. Ywou can't anything more...
RIP Mr. Clarence Clemons Sir. I just can't believe you're gone. May you be in a better place jamming with other greats. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
One of the thrills of my life was being next to the stage in Greenville, SC, in 2009, and having Bruce hold the mic down to me to sing some la, la, la, las during Promised Land. I felt like I was 16. I swear, it was only about 10 seconds, but it was better than the best part of the best sex (OK, maybe not better, but close.)
after forty years of working its all gone now - business closed - out of money - tried to keep it open for the last two years of the forty but the regulations and the goverment taxes finally got me - not bad , it took the goverment to finally put a little guy like me down - and out , like this song i ve got a better place to go see - amen
@Elvisfancilla79 Rocky Dennis correct? I absolutely agree! I purchased Mask with the updated Bruce Springsteen music reincorporated. I was surprised when saw this on the sleeve of the cover but decided to watch it and give it a chance because I was so used to the Bob Seger tracks. I was blown away at how Bruce's songs breathed a different life into the movie. Peter Bogdanovich even said that when Bruce saw the movie that he was in tears loving it. Peter Bogdanovich knew what he was doing
I grew up not such just thinking Springstien was ok, then I realized how important he was to American musc he spoke for the poor working class unkowns who knew that their dreams were harder to come by than that of others, but as an American just as important, I woke up in the middle of the night after struggling through something and had to hear this song, it made me cry.
@celticqueen0206 Something about Springsteen's wording (even though it's so simple), and how he combines it with his music, just has this magic in it that always seems to just make you emotional, and brings forth this thing inside us that we hide to get through everyday..all new feelings that you forget you have after masking them for so long.
@celticqueen0206 AMEN sister!! You hit the nail on the head, you got that right!! You're a true Bruce Tramp, just like me! I worked in a factory in Missouri USA for 18 yrs, working days, evenings & midnights, changing shifts every 5 days, living by my work schedule. Funny thing is...I got out of that factory 10 yrs ago and I'm still searching, yearning and looking and I think Bruce is also....
I cant find the newer alternate version of this song! dang it and my cd broke

"Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start"
When I can't do the talking, music does it all for me.
