  • Dude this is awesome!

  • Just wonderful! Your story on NPR this afternoon was so sweet -- there's something of a writer in you.

One thing seems a little odd though: you were filming underwater in the Puget Sound in September, and yet somehow we hear robins singing!? Do saltwater robins really breed as late as the fall?

  • I heard your interview today and had to see this vid for myself. These sentient creatures are in our midst and we're hardly aware of it. I'm grateful of your fascination with the sea life here. There should be more awareness of this fragile treasure

  • Thank you for sharing this experience! I feel fortunate to have seen it.

  • it's amazing how SMALL they start out!

  • Just herd you on the radio. Had to see this.

  • Everyone call or go by seattle pike restaurant called Cutters and tell them to STOP SERVING OCTOPUS.

  • Notice the little crab from 6:20 to 6:30 in the upper left, presumably trying to snag a few little passers-by?

  • Amazing and rare footage! Thank you for sharing it with us! AMAZING creatures!!

  • Amazing. So sad to know that the mother will pass away, but also so beautiful. I have to admit I did tear up a little.

  • i heard the story today on Seattle's KUOW while driving to work. It captured my attention and I looked forward to checking out the footage. It was funny, when I first got into work one of my co-workers tried giving a child a sticker, which they usually take with an eager smile. But this time the kid didn't want theirs. The sticker turned out to be an octopus and I said that I would take it. I wore it on my chest all day, a sort of tribute to Opal and a reminder to life's beautifully sad cycle.

  • Awesome!

  • very beautiful

  • I cried. You can see why they have to put their whole life into one batch of thousands of eggs--almost any creature would eat them, so probably only a few survive to adulthood. In that, they are just like Pacific salmon, bamboo, and Octomom!

  • That's a lot of fish food!

  • Thank you for this amazing video. It shows just how precious and fragile life really is.

  • Don't they starve themselves to death looking after the eggs?

  • Great job and very educational for me. I looked up the video as I had read the article about it in this week's paper - would have loved to have reposted to Facebook so more people could appreciate it, but I really did find the watermark too distracting to watch more than a couple of minutes, unfortunately.

  • beautiful!! I read that octopuses were good mothers but it was lovely to see her wafting the eggs with her tentacle and all the babies hatching-brilliant footage, thank you :o)

  • Beautiful footage! So many babies!

I understand the watermark. Good job!

  • What is the name of the song?

  • @HikariPuff

Click "see all" beside the comments section. Then press Ctrl+F and search the page for the word "song"

Is that really so difficult? Sheesh!

  • @HybridSpaceMonkey

Thanks for being so "nice" but I did not find. Thanks to another comment I have known the title of the song.

    Sorry for my English.

If anyone is interested: song -> Helios - Halving The Compass

    Keep watching these octopuses!

  • ¡pero si son chopitos!

  • ¡qué cosica que dan los pulpicos! es una pasada de video!!

  • Gracias.

Es una experiencia preciosa poder compartir esto.

  • Who else thought they accidentally had FORA tv on in another tab?

  • Thanks for all the time and care it took to put this together.

  • Yes, a beautiful sacrifice. Thank you for sharing this with me and the world.

  • Don't be fooled. Those cephalopods are dangerous even at that age. Don't think they aren't plotting and planning to over throw all that we hold dear. Just wait, you think they are all cute, then boom! Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

  • Damn nature, you scary!

  • This is and has to be the neatest, coolest video I have seen in years. The music and video so n'sync.Thank-you so much for sharing this video.

  • As excellent as this video is, I have to say that the (C)2010 was pretty distracting.

  • Thank you for making and posting. I felt though that you should have recorded the part of her leaving and then dying to complete the documentation. Our adversion to death is a human thing. Death is just as natural as birth. Octapuses have one of the shortest lives for such an intelligent and advanced creature. That is suprising that they can develope so quickly and then die so quickly.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this....it's amazing.

  • To all, thanks for your great, inspirational, and encouraging comments. I appreciate it! It's been a joy to share this amazing experience with so many. It was truly a labor of love to film and it's been great to see that it has touched so many others!

  • Thanks for sharing this rare video. I have BC on my bucket list of dive vacations and this video shows why.

  • Amazing footage. Beautiful opportunity. Thank you.

  • I'm crying-and redoubling my efforts to keep the land, air and water clean for our amazing neighbors.

  • FABULOUS !!!

  • 1 person never had 50000 babies....

  • agree that the copyright stuff was distracting. Thanks for copyrighting nature.

  • Octopi!!!! :] Incredible. Absolutely incredible. To see all the babies just swimming around was beautiful. Have you guys tracked the little ones at all since you filmed this?

  • Beautiful footage ruined by your copyright watermark. Isn't human nature awesome?!

  • @ruinawish Hi there. Sorry you feel the film is ruined by copyright marking. Sadly I've had footage stolen and claimed as original work of someone else, so I do not post anything of value on a free access location like YouTube without obvious copyright marking. The original footage is copyright free and you'll be able to see it in an upcoming documentary soon!

  • Mother Nature can be so beautiful!

  • About what percentage of the babies can be expected to live to maturity? I would imagine it's much, much lower than 1%.

  • hahahahah bird sounds in the ocean

  • Why didn't you include the ending where the octopus died? I'm not gruesome but it's part of the natural process, it seems like censorship to keep it out.

  • thts cute, the babies look like little METROIDS

  • What an absolutely stunning and touching video. Thank you so much for sharing!! Cheers to you all, and to Mama Octopus, and to each and every little baby.

  • Not to be that guy but Octopi.

  • 4:55 Anyone else see that asshole of a crab trying to eat the babies :I

  • @CassDelP

    Good observation! :)

  • This was so beautiful. And now I'm crying, damn it!

  • A beautiful story; lovingly told. Thank you!

  • I am so impressed with this video. I had no idea the work a mother octopus went through. Talk about selfless and giving up your life for your kids. I posted this on our San Juan Safaris Whale Watching FB to spread the word. Great work. Thank you for doing this. Colleen

  • Nicee..

  • Just gorgeous! LOVE the ending :)!! I'm Divemaster certified but have yet to dive up here yet. Used to all the time in FL. You really make me want to get back into it again!

  • Wow. Amazing.

  • Incredible. Touching. Inspiring. Heartbreaking. Beautiful.

Thank you for doing this. Maybe she was the juvenile my son (then four yo) and I spied in 1999 at low tide off Lincoln Park. Makes one marvel at the cycle of life. Bravo!

Anyone know the title of the Helios song used in the footage? ;-)

  • @mrbigdogsmith1 song is Halving The Compass. watch?v=Yj55nG2tkKw

  • absolutely amazing

  • smiles and tears....

  • what is the song called!???

  • :-) There is indeed beauty left in the world..

  • :-) There is indeed beauty left in the world..

  • This was a really lovely video thank you for making and sharing it. I was a bit sad thinking of the mother octopus and how she would not have lived that much longer after her eggs hatched. The mothers stay in the dens the whole time to oxegenate the eggs and do not even leave to eat. Once the hatchlings all emerge she goes off and is too weak to continue. Thank you for honoring her and her life and her journey and her sacrifice and good luck to the little ones, I love octopuses (octopi?).

  • Music credits are at the conclusion of the film. The group's name is Helios. Many thanks for the lovely comments. As I mentioned earlier, that week of diving was among the most amazing diving experiences I have had to date.

  • Thanks so much for this, excellent video.

  • Powerful and beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

  • This is to cool!

  • Awesome! Thanks for documenting and sharing this incredible journey of life. It reminded of an experience I had as an undergrad bio student back in my native Germany. We were on a marine bio excursion in Southern France, and one day brought up a tiny glob of translucent slime. Every morning, I took it out of the water tank and examined it under a microscope. One day, I could see tiny, eight-legged embryos - baby squid in the making! I followed their development until someone flushed them...

  • Fantastic footage - thank you! Octopi have always fascinated me. You were quite fortunate, as are we now.

  • Oh my AWESOME!!! that is amazing. I love it

  • Aww, you guys are the best octo-nerds. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful sight we never would have otherwise been able to witness =]

  • Fantastic video, amazing footage. What was the music?

  • music credits?

  • It was shot with a Sony HDRCX550V in a Light and Motion housing with Sunray 1200s. I used manual focus for some footage and auto focus for other parts. Glad you enjoyed it!

  • I love your video and I was wondering what is the video equipment you used to film it. Thanks in advance! :D

  • Thank you for the very nice comments! It was perhaps the most joyous diving experience I've ever had. I'm just glad it can be shared with others. :)

  • I saw this video on the Liquivision site and was completely amazed. Had to track down your youtube site. It is absolutely beautiful and had me in tears at parts. Incredible job!!!

  • Nice!

  • beautiful ! :D , only someone doing it right could get such amazing footasge ; )
