The anti folk tag is already fading though, but the 'scene' has been and will be great. To me its about acts and artists who play their instruments and if needed to could busk everything they have recoreded, or still play in a power cut. The 'folk' in this case is a 'homespun' approach to the music with tales of life. an early British label that put stuff on it later assocxaiated with anti folk was 'artists against success ' . That attitude sums a lot up, An anti folker hates celebrity !

I still don't fully understand why this is anti-folk. It sounds like folk to me...

It's not so much the style of playing as the lyrics that makes it anti-folk. Anti-folk is kind of a reaction against folk's tendency to drag it's feet in the past and sing about bygone times. (I know that not all folk music is like this, but a large amount of it is.) Of course, anti-folk is an incredibly loosely defined genre, so that definition doesn't apply to all of it, just Emmy the Great.

Answer: Anti-folk is what happens when contemporary alternative artists realise what they're playing is technically closest to folk music but want to deny it in order to maintain credibility in the current alternative scene, therefore adding 'anti' as kind of a small net to catch any punk-esque credibiliy that happens to be fluttering around. Genres are pretty crap though, let's ignore them and listen to the nice song instead because it's quite good.

can somebody help me? I live on a small island and read about this singer from a scrap of paper on the floor and read that she was some new wave anti folk singer. So trusty old YT to the rescue, and what did I hear, some arrogant teenage angst masquerading as folk not anti folk. But UK LTD seems awash with stroppy females with tuned up guitars and gimp band members, just that mean its good or just another wave pretending to have the ability to outlast the last because it is so reeeal!
