The pitcher nor the hitter can change which hand he throws with or side he hits on during the at-bat. The pitcher should have a system for a situation with a switch hitter. In this case, I would have thrown left-handed because I would have the pick-off move advantage to 1st base with the runner on. You could also say that he should pitch with the hand he's performed better with all night. I would have called time and asked my catcher what he thought.
@Grapes428 With two out and a 7-2 lead he is not trying to pick-off the runner. That is just asking for a wild throw and opening the game wide open.
I think he pitches about the same with both arms, so he should force the batter to go to the side at which he hits the worst. I assume that his his left side since he chose to go righty. The pitcher should have pitched right handed to either force the batter to go left handed or face him as a righty, which didn't work out too well for him.
What r the odds. baseball my favorite sport and im great at it and the wweirdest thing in baseball happens on my birthday how awsome! especialy that im a pitcher too
@yourpapi102 That particular one is not a balk, however if you look at about 5:05 he steps towards the plate before taking his foot off the rubber which would be a balk if the batter didn't have time. Since the batter had called time to switch sides there is no balk. And for the people who are saying the pitcher has to declare a side first, that rule came into effect because of this incident. Now Venditte has to declare his side first and then the batter can step into the box.
Simple Solution: The plate ump could have asked the batter to declare a side and then he could have asked the pitcher to declare a side without telling him the batter's choice.
Pitcher - "This is bullshit, I saw him come to the plate as a righty, so I switched my glove so I could pitch righty so I have the advantage. So then he switches to lefty, so I switch to lefty so I have the advantage. It's not fair that the batter is trying to have an advantage."
Anouncer got it right when he said the ump's should have been prepared for this scenario and known the rule(s) or determined what their course of action would be in this situation.
I also saw that they made a new rule which states he has to maintain whichever stance he chooses to throw for his 1st pitch per batter through that batters time at plate. I'm not a huge follower of baseball, but would be interested to know... Do switch hitters have to maintain the stance they choose for the 1st pitch, or can they change at will between individual pitches?
if i was the batter, i would've agreed to bat righty like he did, then not swing at the first pitch, and then walk over and start to bat left handed. they could be out there all night lol
Hope he makes it to the show. Although his development would be slow. Hed be a good matchups guy out of the pen if he could work on his slider. If he could only throw 94 hed be on the yankee roster right now.
there is a new rule in place for this type of situation now, the pitcher has to come up and pitch the way he stepped on the mound. the batter can change last.
I once saw this go on for 12 hours at a college game in the 60s. Because they kept switching back and forth the game was called as a draw in the 6 th inning. And if you believe that then you have been spending too much time on the computer.
I am not sure if there is an official rule in the book about this scenario, but it is my opinion that the batter should have the last move. There is no doubt that the pitcher has a unique talent, but I still feel that the batter should have final say in the matter.
This is really funny. I'm a switch hitter myself. When I was a little kid, I swung the bat as a lefty. (Which is the only thing I ever did left handed). But everybody bitched at me all the time, so I learned how to be a righty too. Till this day, I can go either way with the bat. Now, it's just kinda fun to mess with people, which is why I thought this video was so funny.
Most managers take starting pitchers out after throwing around 100 pitches or soo.. But this guy can throw around 200 pitches in a game righty= 100, lefty=100... lol
I didn't quite know why I so hated the pitcher, and why I was cheering for the batter... Then I realized it was solely because the pitcher was on the "Yankees", granted not the NYY. But still... Fuck the Yankees..
@dr3pts That's wholly unfair to Pat Venditte and the concept of a switch pitcher. After the incident in this video, there was a rule created called the Pat Venditte rule where the switch pitcher must declare which arm he will be throwing with beforehand if facing a switch hitter. It's a simple rule, and we don't need to completely cripple the careers of 99% of switch-hitters and the future prospect of any switch-pitchers just because you don't like ambidextrous players.
The rule is the batter has to declare the box or which way he's going to hit. The pitcher then can choose which hand he will pitch with. Each player can change once, which essentially will result in the pitcher choosing last.
A pitcher THAT talented to throw from both arms should NOT be punish... it should be the switch-hitting batter. Have many people can actually do this? Now THAT's talent...
the dude keep saying his name Pat's name wrong. I go to school in Nebraska with Venditte's cousin. in 2007 he came to my elementary school of about 300 kids total and talked to us. I wish the best for him. a great guy and very nice.
I can pitch with both arms but I have never switched after starting a game with one arm. I switch hit and the only time I ever switch sides during an at-bat is if the pitcher is pulled and they put in a lefty.
@Jerichoholic88 Whatever, i don't think they'll throw the book at him if the batter has no bat in his hand and switching his shin guard outside the box.
@Jerichoholic88 im not sure but at 1:58 it looks like he steps off and the camera doesnt show him putting his foot infront again. but if that wasnt the case then yea i agree its a balk.
at the time there wasn't a rule and they said it at 3:20 ish....there is now a rule that stats a pitcher must first make the choice as to what hand his/she will pitch with....makes sense, the batter can change either side of the plate anytime during an at bat ~ that's always been the rule.
Actually, there IS a rule... it's been in effect since the 1990s. Whichever way he pitches the first pitch to a certain batter, he must throw all the pitches to that batter that way. He can change to the other side for the next batter if he wants. All levels of play have that rule in effect. The umps actually got it wrong in this game, ruling to give the pitcher one change during the at-bat. I think his glove may be illegal. Should be measured.
@bluffball The pitching restriction is Rule 8.01(f). There is NO equivalent rule on the batter. The batter, once he steps in the box, must take that PITCH on that side. But, he can change sides on every pitch if he wishes.
@cfl990 no i just tryed it out for the first time in the season i've been hitting switch for my whole life just my coach said don't do it cause it will make me look to cocky and the only left handed pitcher in the leage is on our team. and hit my first home run batting right handed
@MauerEllsbury I see that, but there's still the question of what the umpire should have done at the time, and I would argue that the rules already were able to deal with this situation in the way I described, its just so weird and unusual that the umpire wasn't able to figure it out.
I have a theory on this. The umpire should call an automatic "ball" if the pitcher does not throw a pitch after 12 seconds. According to rule 6.02 B the batter may leave his position in the batters box until the pitcher comes set or starts his windup. The batter therefore has the right to change his position in response to the way the pitcher sets up. If the pitcher attempts to change hands he must step off the rubber to legally do so otherwise he balks.
@cwech by stepping off in turn, the pitcher grants the batter the right to change his position and switch sides. You could do this forever if not for rule 8.04 the pitcher must deliver a pitch within 12 seconds or the umpire is to call a "ball." Actually, upon reading the rule a little closer I think its a balk with a runner on under 8.05 H
If your IQ was higher than your age, you'd know that my comment was a funny quote from Yogi Berra. You're obviously one of the ubiquitous morons who infest YouTube.
Even if you didn't know who Yogi Berra is, people of average intelligence might get a f 'ing clue if they see --YOGI BERRA at the end of the comment....dumbass!
Hey, ricochetrob: I hope you got my email. There is a rule for this. MLB has been around for a long time. There is a rule for everything imagineable. That's probably why this hasn't been tried in the majors. I read about this scenario in the 1970's. It IS covered in the rules. The pitcher holds the ball, therefore he is the one that can be called for delay of game. If the batter tried to delay the game, all the umpire has to do is motion to the pitcher to pitch the ball...3 strikes, he's out.
There is a rule for this: The pitcher must declare which arm he is going to pitch with. This is the rule for different reasons. It's a safety issue for the batter also. This is not beer-league softball. Also, the pitcher's glove looks illegal. I would guess it is specially made for him & it looks too large. That's illegal. The glove would have to be removed from the game.
@ricochetrob "The pitcher must visually indicate to the umpire, batter and runner(s) which way he will begin pitching to the batter. Engaging the rubber with the glove on a particular hand is considered a definitive commitment to which arm he will throw with. The batter will then choose which side of the plate he will bat from." That's direct from the rulebook. Pitcher has to declare first.
@Konformation07 exactly, and you have a better chance of hitting pitches from a right-hander when you're batting left-handed. The ball isn't hidden as long; if I were the batter I'd bat that way so it wouldn't matter how Venditte pitched.
This is pretty fuuuuuunny!!!:)

If the pitcher attempts to change hands he must step off the rubber to legally do so otherwise he balks.
cwech 1 year ago
@cwech by stepping off in turn, the pitcher grants the batter the right to change his position and switch sides. You could do this forever if not for rule 8.04 the pitcher must deliver a pitch within 12 seconds or the umpire is to call a "ball." Actually, upon reading the rule a little closer I think its a balk with a runner on under 8.05 H

The only way you can settle something like this is rock, paper, scissors between the pitcher and batter.

The glove would have to be removed from the game.
jtjvlj 1 year ago
@jtjvlj
You're wrong. There is no rule for it, and the pitcher is legal across the board.
The rule (that should be) applied is 'Delay of Game', and it is called on the batter.
So, in essence, its the batter that has to "declare" which side.
ricochetrob 1 year ago
@ricochetrob "The pitcher must visually indicate to the umpire, batter and runner(s) which way he will begin pitching to the batter. Engaging the rubber with the glove on a particular hand is considered a definitive commitment to which arm he will throw with. The batter will then choose which side of the plate he will bat from." That's direct from the rulebook. Pitcher has to declare first.

He struck out on a curveball tailing away. The exact pitch switch hitters always avoid and never see.

The batter should have just batted left handed; Venditte's pitches are only like 70 mph with his left arm right?
db0255 1 year ago
@db0255 but then venditte would throw his right hand
Konformation07 1 year ago
@Konformation07 exactly, and you have a better chance of hitting pitches from a right-hander when you're batting left-handed. The ball isn't hidden as long; if I were the batter I'd bat that way so it wouldn't matter how Venditte pitched.
