Its not that Arvanites are Albanians - its that some Albanian are Greeks (apart from the Muslims which intermarried with the Turks etc). "Albania" is a creation of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. "Albanians" say they are Illyrians! Well...."Illyrians" saw themselves as from Illyiros

first to gjergj kastrioti: yes his mother was slavonic. she came from a noble family in macedonia. his father gjon kastrioti was an albanian prince, no doubt.

he was a landlord of the region "mati" in northern albania where even today the clan of mirdita lives. that clan boasted throughout centuries beeing the

descendants of kastriot warriors. what makes you think he was a greek??

...the bosniaks are slavonics but not serbs, they both have seperate history.

why they are claiming illyrian descendence is simple. the illyrian had a large population with many different tribes, they did not vanish from earth after slavonic invasion. most of them assimilated into slavonic population. todays south-slavs have a small illyrian element, this is called "ethnogenesis". the part which escaped assimilation is the population of modern albania.

those people didnt had a writing culture, they did not record their history like hellenes. anything scholars know today from them is from greek or roman historians. it is possible that greeks included them into their mythology..."Illyiros"

Its incredible to think that Greeks deny Arvanites their Albanian roots. I am a Northern Albanian myself and I understand 90% of what they say, although this dialect is supposed to be hundreds of years old which Greeks claim as their own.

dikomoutube, there are many references, too much to list here. a good starting point is to read the Helsinki Monitor report on the Arvanites of greece. it is still biased in favor of the greek point of view, especially as regards the sense of Arvanite pride which is greatly misrepresented in this report, but it does elucidate the question of the origin of the Arvanites as Albanians nonetheless.

diko, it's albanian, as sung by the ancient albanian community in greece known as the arvanites. they were severely discriminated against, since greek independence, as attempts were made to sever ties with communities in Albania proper. in fact, it is estimated that as much as 55% of greece's population was albanian speaking at the time of greek independence. the main so-called "greek" heroes of the independence effort against the ottomans, were Albanian Christians. greece suppresses this.
