One thing, Thoreau didn't "retreat" from society...He went into the woods to live simply and to write a book. He still got visits from his friends and visited his family often. Also, he refused to pay his taxes as an act of civil disobedience...This make it sound as if he just didn't pay his taxes because he was so desperate.
I watched this on our public station. I didn't expect it to be laced with so much humor. A very nice way to present the stodgy Mr. Thoreau. Big thumbs up!
His school did not fail! It was a great success. The brothers closed the school due to John's poor health. Henry felt he could not run it alone. John then ended up passing not from his lung disease, but from tetanus.
What an incredible series of videos. Henry has always been a hero of mine, and I did my thesis on him in college. I like that we see him as a real person here and not a myth.

Great sustenance in Thoreau's "Walden" for those who know how to unplug enough to listen to nature's voice. A profoundly beautiful read.

The first couple minutes of this sounds like it could be made into a Will Ferrell comedy.
