George, my favorite Beatle (God Bless His Soul Always), came close, but still only reached the fringe of Mark's or David's sheer mastery of the form, IMHO...

With all due respect to the Beatles and McCartney -- I have loved them for 45 years and counting -- Mark Knopfler is light years beyond Macca. His musicianship is stellar, and his composition is utterly phenomenal. I hate to make comparison, esp. when it comes to the "greatest," but I had to say the same thing re: Pink Floyd and McCartney. I'm delighted with all of Macca's success over the years, but, again, Gilmour is just light years beyond him, as well, and pretty much always has been.

Our Shangri La was the first song my baby boy heard - On the CD in the car on the way home from hospital. Still gives me goosebumps when I play it for him 4 years on. He loves it.
