This is a myth that doesn't die. The legion recruiters checked to see if the blood groups were tatooed under the arms of German recruits - a dead giveaway that they were SS. If they were or the tattoo had been rmoved, the Legion turned them away.
@PierreBraquemard It was stated by the viet minh that the Germans ex SS and Wermacht were the only ones feared during the indo china war and became the peoples republic of chinas biggest problem. The French Foreign Legion does not care about a soldiers past or current incriminations as long as he serves as a soldier first. Given the SS's appetite for fighting communists It is not a far cry from reality that tens of thousand ex SS had become the professors of fighting communism in the FFL
@coquitlam30 Legionnaires enlist under fake names and identities, how could the viet minh bastards could know the past of their enemies when even the French don't know the truth about the Legionnaires...
This is Viet minh propaganda bullshit to claim they were fighting nazis (just like the so called bicycles used at Dien Bien Phu while the truth is they used thousands of Soviet-built 4wd Molotova / GAZ trucks to toe the artillery uphill).
Its unlikely the Germans in the legion were mostly nsdap or Waffen SS.
However 70% was german ! Mostly wehrmacht and hitlerjugend (and yes some SS)recruited by French legion recruiters straight out of POW camps in Germany.
There is a documentary on youtube where several Germans ex legionnaire talk about Dien Bien Phu and their experience with legion recruiters who straight out lied to them about their true role to get them in.
@coquitlam30 There were anticommunist Eastern european too in the Foreign Legion.
Moreover, Legionnaires were not the most part of the fighters, actually there were many colonials from French Africa and by 1954 half of the French Union fighters were actually Pro-French Asian... the anticommunist Vietnam National Army was created in 1949 by the French and fought the Viet minh...
so yes it is really sad that people still believe in Viet minh propaganda / myths.
Joli montage!
super film documentaire!
