These two had a once in a lifetime chemistry on screen; which is why their movies were a hit. Both had each other's back & in 1968 Judy appeared on the tonight show for the first time & Johnny made a little joke about mickey's height & limited to certain roles. Judy never once agreed with him & called him a great talent. 15 yrs since their last movie@ MGM,1948's "Words and Music" where Judy had a cameo appearance as herself & performed 2 songs one with Mickey there chemistry on TJGS shone thru.
I loved in the aired version at the end when this little girl brought her roses out of the audience. Idiotic Jerry Van Dyke wouldnt take the flowers because it woudl block his own shot on camera. You can see how he acted and I felt bad for Judy. It was her show and her first episode and her time to shine. Amazing how he and Mel Torme acted. But in the end it is Judy who is the most remembered. Sinatra was right when he said at her funeral ," in the end we all will be forgotten" , but NOT Judy!
I thought Mickey Rooney was always a "story teller" He embellished and totally contradicted himself about MGM and what they did to Judy and Now I read somewhere that he wrote his book "Life is short" and tells the world Judy and Kay Thompson were lovers. I mean why did he have to say that? What purpose? Even he now needs Judy to make money for him. It wasn't enough of the blood suckers who bled Judy Dry during her life time to make a buck, that he best friend had to say those thing about her
@NFitalianGuy I keep going back to this marvelous clip, where Judy is spontaneous, unlike in her cornball shows with Jerry Van Dyke, Soupy Sales, etc. It's 100% true that Judy & Kay had a fling; it's also in Lorna Luft's miniseries about Judy. Judy's bisexuality is in several bios and I don't necessarily mean the sleazy ones. But look at it this way, if Mickey spilled the beans that Judy had an affair with Jackie Cooper, would that also be wrong of him? Is it a matter of our own prejudices?
@defundthewar Judy and Kay had a personal friendship and professional association... Judy wasn't bisexual.. Judy like men to! perhaps too. she loved the love....
I love how says up front, "my wife knows this- my WIVES know this!!" when speaking of Judy as the love of his life...makes you wonder "what if," no? I'm SOOOO glad he got to say that to the world while she was alive, as any and all interviews he did post-1969 spoke of Judy almost as the love that got away. His memoirs of her were rhapsodies.
This clip was shot after the taping, and was never broadcast. The love between M & J is obvious; they had met as showbiz tots even before MGM, and it was a brother-sister feeling. Having Rooney as a guest was just one misfire among many that did not make a dent in Bonanza, but probably nothing could have in 1963. If you look carefully, although Judy is very thin, she is bloated around the middle, as was the case most weeks, which tells us that something is not quite right, health-wise.
Yeah! Dang, they shoulda gotten married! Before they ever married anyone else...and stayed married to each other!!
