The lady had guts!! No matter the condition of her voice. Her ability to convey the meaning of the words was unsurpassable. No one in memory comes even close. One note: She said that although performing "By Myself" was her favorite song, her personal favorite was "Through The Years", another incredible song. Sadly, I ave only seen her perform it once, but as usual, she made it her own. No wonder Johnny Mercer loved her all his life. Many of his songs were either written for her or with h
You guys I love her I adore her and she sends me to OTHER WORLDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY ONE JUDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WISH THEY WOULD RELEASE A CARNEGIE HALL DVD ALREADY ITS BEEN 43 YEARS AND I HAVE SEEN PIECES OF IT SO IT MUST BE SOMEWHERE?RIP JUDY GARLAND..........LOVE BARB...
I've heard this song 100 times on various recordings...... Listening and watching just now, the hair on the back of my neck it standing up, and there are tears in my eyes.
Much appreciated and thank you for posting this. The FIRST time she hosted the Hollywood Palace was undeniably the best -- vocal quality-wise. (Judy always sounded better with a little weight on her. Here there are apparent problems beginning to surface). She is, however the definitive show business GREAT -- most performers couldn't even fathom attempting this at anytime in their career . . . she will, however last forever.
Soulful to the core, Judy got to the heart & soul of a song with more depth and emotional involvement than anyone...always riveting "By Myself" is classic Garland to the end...Bravo Judy, you are loved and missed & RIP
wow..just watched this again all the way through. it's hypnotizing..can't take my eyes off her! She always gave her all. No wonder she is still a legend 45 years later. who can touch her? Bravo Judy!!
She looks great here, and performs the number beautifully. As far as vocal wear and tear, belting for forty years will do it to you, too. It's very rare for belters to last as long as Garland did and keep their vocal purity (Merman was one of the rare exceptions) and Garland worked a lot, and almost always full out.
Why do people always think when Judy wasn't exactly on top of her vocals, that she was 'high'? Can't be too loaded to have this control...awww hell, just leave her alone already!!
@Herestome2 Absolutely. Judy worked unbelievably hard most of her too short life, and her vocals (she was only human) took their toll of the strain put on them. Indeed, how could she possibly have made such incredible performances if she was "high" or "drunk" as some people ignorantly assume, based on mischievous rumor and here say. Over the years Judy's reputation took a knock, however her talent and artistry is intact via her vocal and visual portfolio.
It sounds as she is drunk when she is singing this... she is wonderful, a natural talent... but her voice sounds as it is under the influence of drugs!
@StockholmMr Garland historians concur no drugs at this point; just a voice ravaged by serious cigarette smoking and a good deal of alcohol. Very common in the 60's ... Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Crawford just to name a few.
@mikesterSTLMO "Garland historians"? What are you talking about? Perhaps you mean gossip-mongers and armchair critics who do not have an ounce of talent between them. How could Judy possibly have performed the inhuman[e] amount of work she undertook if she had drank "a good deal of alcohol"? Of course she drank, but not in the way you imply. She took medication sure. She also overworked and in the end wore herself out. Quit with all the nonsense about Judy and respect her memory.
@hirchik Discussing Judy's 'state of mind' during her last performances does not 'disrespect her memory'. If Judy's own children, co-stars, and friends can acknowledge that she was in fact a drug addict AND an alcoholic, then a garden variety fan such as yourself should be able to as well. Thirdly, who the fck are you to reprimand me? Finally, to quote a character in Judy's most notable film; "now off you go before someone throws a house on you too!".
@mikesterSTLMO Your reply to me confirms the adage: When a snake is cornered it will spew its venom. Evidently, my comments hit a nerve with you. Get over it.
@StockholmMr Dear dear. Another comment lazily resorting to the Garland myth apropos drink and drugs. It's all too easy isn't to stick such labels on performers who put in 110% to their output in the way of production. And that's the key: Judy was a commodity, and she was introduced to medication to keep churning out the goods. Great for advertising, managers and agents. Bad for sensitive and vulnerable individuals who gave more than they could humanly give, and suffered because of it.
@cjm608 Many of people who discover Judy Garland always are blown away at her immense talent. The is a Rason why she is still the world's greatest entertainer.. She was a true Showman..
some comments about her primetime appearances post 1966. there were many, including mike douglas in 1968. also tonight show (johnny carson) in 1968. not quite prime time, but mainstream tv none the less.
Dressing room, that is true but read Dick Cavett's take on her dressing room in 1968:
" She couldnt make a false move on stage and so did all she could to delay leaving it; and, equally, leaving the cozy womb of the dressing room. She was home in those two places.
Leave them, and you are back in so-called real life — where it seemed poor Judy made only false moves."
Legend has it that after this show, Judy trashed her dressing room in anger over her divorce from Mark Herron. She never made another prime time American tv appearance.
@luftloft "Legend has it.."? What nonsense. Garland's legend is in the legacy of her performances, as is her timelessness. This performance, among many, could have been recorded yesterday..
@hirchik - sorry but I'm just reporting what John Fricke states in his book, "Judy Garland the Great Entertainer." I certainly agree with you about Judy's performing greatness but that still erase the facts.
